To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK RoMANosIK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Harrison, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protractor Surface-Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to an improved construction of surfacegage of a character which may be termed a protractor surface gage; and, the invention refers, more particularly, to a novel construction of protractor surface gage for use by machinists, engineers, and other craftsmen, for laying out angles, radial lines, or desired fixed points upon plates or other surfaces which are to be provided with construction lines or points.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a simple, efficient and accurately operating tool of the character herein-above mentioned.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a protractor surface gage having a movable leg provided with a marking point and means for setting said movable leg at any desired angle from the given central line or center and at a required radius from said center to enable the user to mark off angles and radii about a given center upon the surface to be provided with construction lines.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of my present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, said invention consists, primarily, in the novel protractor surface gage hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of the vanous parts, as well as in the detalls of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims Specification of Letters Patent.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure 1 is a face view or elevation of a protractor surface-gage made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the base of the protector surface gage, illustrating a means for assuring the perpendicular position of its standard. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the protractor surface gage, the base and a portion of the supporting standard being broken away. Fig. 4; is a top view of such portion of said protractor surface gage, as is shown in Fig. 3. Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the complete protractor surface gage made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the same comprising a base or supporting body 2, to which is pivotally connected a vertically movable spring-actuated plate 3, the upward movement of which is limited by a fixed yoke 1 carrying an adj usting screw 5, the latter being adapted to engage said plate 3 as a stop. Extending at right angles from said plate 3, and pivotally connected therewith, is a stud 6 which is provided with a lock-nut 7 for securing the same in any adjusted position. Secured to and extending upwardly from said stud 6 is a standard or supporting rod 8, and slidably arranged upon said standard or supportin rod 8 is a collar or ring 9 which is connected by means of a downwardly extending arm 10 to a straight-edge block 11, which, when brought to rest upon the upper surface of said base or supporting body 2 causes said standard or supporting rod 8 to assume a true perpendicular relation to said base or supporting body 2, at right angles thereto. Slidably mounted upon said standard or supporting rod 8 is a protractor-disk supporting a movable leg, the same comprising a main body or plate 12 which is provided with a forwardly extending annular flange 13 in which is formed a seat 14. The rear side of said main body or plate 12 is provided with a centrally disposed boss 15 from which extends or projects a hub 16 provided with external screw-threads 17. Said main body or plate 12 is provided with a centrally disposed hole or opening 18 which extends through said boss 15 and hub 16, and journaled in said hole or opening 18 is a studpin 19. Secured upon the inner end of said stud-pin 19, by means of the screw-threads 20, is a rotatable disk 21, provided at its inner marginal edge with a chamfer 22 adapted to seat said rotatable disk 21 upon the seat 14 of said annular flange 13 connected with said main-body or plate 12. Secured upon the outer end of said stud-pin 19, by means of the screw-threads 23, is a nut-piece 24, for retaining said rotatable disk 21 in operative relation with said main body or plate 12. Arranged upon the outer face of said rotatable disk 21 are a pair of guide- members 25 and 26, between which is slidably supported a movable leg 27. Said movable leg 27 is retained in its proper relation to said rotatable disk 21 and between said guide-members thereof by means of a washer 28 cooperating with a retaining screw 29 which screws into a suitably disposed screw-threaded opening 30 in the body 01' said rotatable disk 21. Said screw 29 is provided with a suitable manipulating head 31. Said washer 28 laps over, in a retaining relation, the face of said movable leg 27, and after a desired longitudinal adjustment of said movable leg 27 has been obtained, said screw 29 may be tightened to cause a frictional or binding engagement of said washer 28 with said movable leg 27, so as to retain the same in its adjusted position. Secured upon one of the outwardly projecting ends of said movable leg 27 is a removable marking point 32, the same being provided with a suitable tongue or lug 33, adapted to be received in a corresponding groove or socket '34 in the main body of said movable leg 27,
a set-screw being provided for binding said tongue or lug in its inserted position.
Movably arranged upon said standard or supporting rod 8 is a split collar 36, provided with a pair of outwardly extending and perforated ears or lugs 37, having screw threads for the reception of the shank 38 of a locking or binding screw 39, for securing said split-collar in any desired position upon said standard or supporting rod 8. Said split collar 36 is further provided with an outwardly and oppositely extending perforated arm or bracket 40 adapted to receive the hub 16 of said main-body or plate 12 so as to support the same, said arm or bracket 40 being retained in its supporting engagement therewith by means of a lock-nut 41 which is screwed upon the screw-threads 17 i of said hub 16.
Etched, or otherwise arranged, upon the face of the flange 13 of said main body or plate 12 is a protractor-scale 42, the same comprising graduations or markings inclicating the degrees of a circle. The said graduations read in opposite directions from the right and left ends of a horizontal line passing through the center of said main body or plate 12, upwardly to a perpendicular line passing through said center, thus dividing said protractor-scale 42 into a right and left scale, each scale being graduated to 90 degrees. Said rotatable disk 21 may be provided wit-h a mark or other indicating point 43 adapted to register with the 90 degree mark of said protractor-scale 42, and when so registered said rotatable disk 21 will carry the lower edge 44 of said movable leg 27 in registration with a horizontal line passing through the center of said main body or plate 12, and in registration with the zero marks of both the right and left sections of said protractor-scale 42, this position being the normal initial position of szpd rotatable disk 21 and said movable leg 2 The face of said movable leg 27 is provided with a lineal scale 45, graduated in inches, and the sub-divisions thereof, said scale reading from the point or extreme end of said marking-point 32 connected with said movable leg 27. The lower of said guide-members 26 is provided with a suitable mark or other indicating point 46 indicating the center of said main body or plate 12 and said rotatable disk 21 with relation to which said movable leg 27 may be moved, and with relation to which said lineal scale may be read.
Having thus described the construction of the protractor surface gage, it remains to describe the manner of its use in performing its special or novel functions.
It will of course be understood, that the protractor surface gage is used in the man ner of and for the purposes which the ordinary surface gage heretofore known is used, but is capable of producing additional results, such as marking angles, radii, etc., for given points, quickly, easily and accurately, without the necessity of using additional or extra scales or measuring instruments. Assume for example, that it is desired to mark a radial line extending a required distance from a given point and at a required angle from a given line upon a plate or other surface. The plate to be marked is jacked up in the usual manner, perpendicular to the base of said protractor surface gage, ready to be marked. The horizontal and perpendicular lines are marked upon said plate, or other surface, to provide a given central point and said given lines. If itis desired to mark a point, so as to construct a radial line from said given center distant four inches and to be at an angle of 30 degrees from and above said given horizontal line, the said marking point 32, when said movable leg 27 is in its normal initial position, is brought opposite said given center by adjusting said splitcollar 36 upon said standard or supporting rod 8, to elevate or lower the same to the required point. Said movable leg 27 is then adjusted, with relation to the center of said main body or plate 12 and rotatable disk 21, to bring its marking point 32 distant from said center four inches, this being accomplished by registering the four inch graduation of said lineal scale 45 with the mark or indicating point 46. The rotatable disk 21 is now turned or rotated upon said main body or plate 12, to bring the lower edge of said movable leg 27 opposite the 30 degree graduation of the left hand section of said protractor-scale 42. Said protractor surface gage is now moved up to bring said marking point 32 in contact with the surface to be marked and moved across the same to mark a horizontal line, and the plate or other surface to be marked is then turned so as to present vertically the line just marked. The movable leg 27 is again centered with the given point on said plate, or other surface, after being returned to its normal initial position, and being maintained at its extension of four inches. The given vertical line having become a horizontal line, by the turning of said plate or surface to be marked, it is necessary to measure from the same 60 degrees, or the difference between 90 degrees and the desired angle of 30 degrees; and, to this end said movable leg 27 is set upon the protractor-scale 42 at 60 degrees, and said protractor surface gage is again moved up to bring said marking point 82 in contact with the surface to be marked and is moved across the same so as to describe a line intersecting the previously marked line, and the point of intersection will be four inches from the given center on said plate, or other surface, and 30 degrees from the original given horizontal line drawn thereon, a line connecting this intersection with the given center providing the required radius. From this illustration, it will be clearly evident, what classes of work may be performed with my novel construction of protractor surfacegage.
I am aware that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, as described in the accompanying specification, without departing from the scope of my present invention and as defined in the claims which are appended to the said specification. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as set forth in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A protractor surface gage comprising a base, a standard connected therewith, a main body movably supported on said standard, a rotatable disk connected with said main body, a movable leg slidably supported on said rotatable disk, a protractorscale on said main-body adapted to be exposed beneath said movable-leg, and a lineal scale on the front or exposed face of said movable leg, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A protractor surface gage comprising a base, a standard, means for pivotally supporting said standard upon said base, means for positioning said standard perpendicular or at right angles to said base, a main body movably supported on said standard, a rotatable disk connected with said main body, a movable leg slidably supported on said rotatable disk, a protractor-scale on said main body adapted to be exposed beneath said movable-leg, and a lineal scale on the front or exposed face of said movable leg, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
' 3. A protractor surface gage, comprising a base, a standard, means for pivotally sup porting said standard upon said base, a collar slidably arranged on said standard, a downwardly extending arm connected with said collar, a straight-edge member connected with said arm adapted to be brought in engagement with the upper surface of said base to position said standard perpendicularly thereto, a main body movably supported on said standard, a rotatable disk connected with said main body, a movable leg slidably supported on said rotatable disk, and a protractor-scale on said main body adapted to be exposed beneath said movableleg, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A protractor surface gage comprising a base, a standard, means for pivotally sup porting said standard upon said base, a collar slidably arranged on said standard, a downwardly extending arm connected with said collar, a straight-edge member connected with said arm adapted to be brought in engagement with the upper sur face of said base to position said standard perpendicularly thereto, a main body movably supported on said standard, a rotatable disk connected with said main body, a movable leg slidably supported on said rotatable disk, a protractor-scale on said main body adapted to be exposed beneath said movableleg, a removable marking point connected with one'end of said movable leg, and a lineal scale on the front or exposed face of said movable-leg, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A protractor surface gage comprising a base, a standard connected with said base, a split collar movably supported upon said standard, an arm extending from said split collar, a main body, means for securing said main body upon said arm of said split collar, a rotatable disk connected with said main body, a movable leg slidably supported on said rotatable disk, a marking point connected with said movable leg, a protractorscale on said main body adapted to be ex posed beneath said movable leg, and a lineal scale on the front or exposed face of said movable leg, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A protractor surface gage comprising a base, a standard connected with said base, a split collar movably supported upon said standard, an arm extending from said split collar, a main body, means for securing said main body upon said arm of said split collar, an annular flange provided with a seat and connected with said main body, a rotatable disk seated upon said seat, means for rotatably securing said rotatable disk upon said seat, a movable leg slidably supported on said rotatable disk, a marking point connected with said movable leg, a protractor scale on said annular flange of said main body adapted to be exposed beneath said movable leg, and a lineal scale on the front or exposed face of said movable leg, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A protractor surface gage comprising a base, a standard connected with said base, a split collar movably supported upon said standard, an arm extending from said split collar, a main body, means for securing said main body upon said arm of said split collar, an annular flange provided with a seat and connected with said main body, a rotatable disk seated upon said seat, means for rotatably securing said rotatable disk upon said seat, a pair of guide-members on the face of said rotatable disk, a movable leg slidably supported between said guide members, a marking point connected with said movable leg, a protractor-scale on said annular flange of said main body adapted to be exposed beneath said movable leg, and a lineal scale on the front or exposed face of said movable leg, said scale reading from the outer end of said marking point, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A protractor surface gage comprising a base, a standard connected with said base, a split collar movably supported upon said standard, an arm extending from said split collar, a main body, means for securing said main body upon said arm of said split collar, an annular flange provided with a seat and connected with said main body, a rotatable disk seated upon said seat, a studpin connected with said rotatable disk and journaled in said main-body, a nut-piece for retaining said rotatable disk and stud-pin in operative relation with said main body, a pair of guide-members on the face of said rotatable disk, a movable leg slidably supported between said guide-members, a marking point connected with said movable leg, a washer and locking screw connected with saidrotatable disk for retaining said movable leg in any longitudinally adjusted position, and aprotractor-scale on said an nected with said arm adapted to be brought in engagement with the upper surface of said base to position said standard perpendicularly thereto, a split collar movably supported on said standard, an arm extending from said split collar, a main body, means for securing said main body upon said arm of said split collar, an annular flange provided with a seat and connected with said main body, a rotatable disk seated upon said seat, a stud-pin connected with said rotatable disk and jo-urnaled in said main body, a nut-piece for retaining said rotatable disk and stud-pin in operative relation with said main body, a pair of guide-members on the face of said rotatable disk, a movable leg slidably supported between said guidemembers, a marking point connected with said movable leg, a washer and locking screw connected with said rotatable disk for retaining said movable leg in any longitudinally adjusted position, a protractor scale on said annular flange of said main body or plate adapted to be exposed beneath said movable leg, and a lineal scale on the front or exposed face of said movable leg, said scale reading from the outer end of said marking point, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
