To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. PLOW- MAN, a-"citizen of the United States, residing at Camargo, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention. relates to metallic ties and rail fasteners associated therewith, and one of the primary objects of the invention is to construct atie for supporting rails that can be tamped and firmly anchored in the roadbed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal tie having integral rail engaging members which engage with the outer edges of the rail flanges, whereby the rails may be properly spaced by such contact and,
thus materially facilitate the laying of the rails.-
A further object of the invention is to provide a metal tie which has integral rail engaging means associated therewith adjacent its ends and removable and adjustable rail fasteners disposed adjacent the said rail engaging means, the securing element for the fasteners being so arranged as to permit of the fasteners being adjusted from the ends of the tie and consequently from the exterior of the track, thus obviating the liability of danger to the track hand working between the rails of a track.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

The roadbed within which ties constructed in accordance with my invention are adapted to be laid may .be, and preferably is, formed of concrete, and each of the ties includes a flat base 1 which is adapted to be received in the said concrete and from which projects the substantially rectangular tie proper 2. The tie has upwardly converging I sides and the ends thereof project at the bot tom of the tie. The tie, at its ends, and upon its upper face, is integrally formed with rail engaging members 4, the inner tailed recesses 6. 'The rail clamp members are indicated by the numerals 11 and include each a dove-tailed base l0, ,the angular ends of which being designed to engage with the angular end walls 7 and 8 of the recess 6. Integrally formed at one of the corners of the body 10 is a rail engaging extension 13, the under surface of which being inclined, as at 1 1, to conform to and to engage with the angular upper face of the foot of the rail 3, on the inner side of the said rail. The rail engaging extension is also designed to contact with the edge of the foot of the rail, and the said extension, at its juncture with the body 10 is formed with an angularly arranged opening that is designed to aline with a similar opening 16 between the walls 8 and the ends of the tie. The'shanks 17 of headed elements '18 pass through the registering openings 15 and 16, the ends of the shanks being threaded and projecting over the ends of the body of the tie proper. The bolt members have their shanks 17, when received in the openings between the clamp plates and the tie, arranged to contact with the inner corners of the foot or base portions of the rails 3,. the angular arrangement of the said bolts being also desirable, inasmuch as the same tends to force the rail engaging extensions of the clamping plates downwardly on the rails 3 as well as bringing the clamping plates toward the rails and the angular inner walls 14 of the extension 13 into tight contact with the upper surfaces of the footor base portions on the inner sides of the said rails, thus forcing the outer portions of the said foot or base flanges of the rails into tight engagement with the lips 4 of the ties 1. These threaded ends are enga ed by nuts 19, suitable washers 20 being olisposed between the nuts and the ends of the tie proper,
The seats 5 ma y be provided with com pressible cushion members so that the yieldability of the rails s wil l not be interfered with, and the fastening members 11 can be adjusted from the ends of the ties andconsequently from the outer sides of the track,

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advaiitagethereof will, it is thought be perfe'ctly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without verge upwardly and the ends of which, at
