A further object of the invention is to provide a rail chair having an adjustable rail fastening, the construction of which is such that it may be used for clamping any of the standard makes or types of rails to the bed plate and which will positively prevent creeping of the rails after adjustment.
A further object is to provide the rail fastening with an eccentric washer having angular faces for contact with the base flange of a rail, the washers being movable around the rail clamping members to adjust the rail laterally for gage and to accommodate rails having different widths of rail base.V i A further object is to make the eccentric washers interchangeable and of diiferent thicknesses to permit 'the fastening to be used for clamping rails, the base flanges of which vary.` in thickness.
A still further Vobject of the invention is to provide the rail ,clamping members with enlarged heads which bear against the base flange of a rail and abutments on the'bed plate of thechair, the lateral thrust of the rail being transmitted through the eccentric washers and clampingl members to said abutments.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a rail having a standard cross section and Mounted upon the cross tie B is a bed plate 5 preferably arolled shape, although the plate may be otherwise formed if desired. The bed plate 5 is substantially rectangular in shape and' preferably extends the entire width of the upper surface of the tie, said platel having its opposite ends provided with upstanding abutments 6, the inner faces 7 -of which are perpendicular to the upper sur. face of the bed plate, as shown.
The bed plate 5 is permanently secured to the cross -tie by means of primary fastening devices, preferably in the form of bolts 8 which extends through the cross tie and through suitable openings in thebed plate and have their upper ends threaded for engagement with nuts 9. The intermediate portions of the bolts 8 are preferably alrgular in cross section so as to prevent turning of the bolts in the cross tie while the lower ends thereof are formed with heads 11 which bear against the lower face of the tie or may be seated in countersinks formed therein if desired; The primary fastening devices 0r bolts 8 are arranged at the 0ppositediagonal corners' of the bed plate and,
as before stated, serve to clamp the bed plate in position on the upper surface of the cross tie. The bed plate 5 may thus be at.-
tached to the tie at the treating plant and said plate shipped with the rtie to the place of use The bed plate 5 is also provided with threaded openings 10 preferably disposed in staggered relation and which receive the threaded Shanks 11 of rail clamping memf bers, indicated at 12, the lower ends of said Shanks belng preferably conical to facilitate passage through the threaded openings in the bed plate. Each rail clamping member 12 is provided with an enlarged head having la laterally extending flange 13, the periphery of which is adapted to bear against the perpendicular face 7 of the adjacent abutment and receive the lateral thrust of the rail. The lower face of the head of each rail clamping member is inclined downwardly at 14 for Contact with the upper surface of the base flange of the rail and by engagement with said rail serves to eectually clamp the rail on the bed plate ora shim and positively prevent creeping of said rail. The head of each clamping member is provided with an angular portion 15 adapted to receive a chuck or wrench for tightening said clamping members after the fastenings have been adjusted.

' each rail clamping member and the upper surface of the bed plate 5 is a rail engaging member preferably in the form of a washer 16 having af plurality of flat angular faces 17 movable successively into engagement with the adjacent flat edge of the base flange of the rail, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. gaging member or washer 16 is flat, while the upper face thereof is concaved or dished at 18 t0 correspond to the inclination of the face 14 of the adjacent rail clamping member 12, there being an opening 19 formed in each washer and adapted to receive the shank of the rail clamping member. That portion of the shank 11 of each rail clamping member where it passes through the opening 19 is preferably smooth, while the bore of the opening 19 is correspondingly smooth. It will thus be seen that the rail engaging members or washers 16 are eccentrically mounted on the bed plate and are held against accidental displacement by means of the rail clamping members. The rail engaging members or washers 16 are referably interchangeable and made in di erent thicknesses so as to accommodate the base flanges of different standard types of rails. It will here be noted that the flanges 13 of the rail clamping members by engagement with the upper surface of the base flange of the rail serve to hold the rail on the bed plate while the lateral thrust of the rail is transmitted through the medium of the washers 16 and flanges 13 of the rail clamping members to the abutments.
In order to adjust the rail for surface the rail clamping members 12 are adjusted vertically and a shim 2O is interposed between the lower face of the rail and the upper surface of the bed plate 5, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, after which the rail clamping members are tightened and clamped home by means of a chuck or wrench which The lower face of each rail enadjacent longitudinal edge of said rail and the small portion of the eccentric washer on the other side of the rail presented to the corresponding flat edge of the base flange of the rail, after which the clamping mem- Y bers are tightened in the manner before stated. It'will here be noted that Owing to the contact of the angular faces 17 of the washers with the flat longitudinal edges of the base flange of the rail, said Washers can not turn or rotate about the shanks of the rail clamping members, while the heads of said rail clamping members being larger than the washers effectually house said washers and prevent vertical displacement thereof.
In Fig. 6 Aof the drawings there is illustrated a modifiedform of the invention particularly adapted for curves and joints, the device being shown by way of illustration in connectio'n with' a joint in which 21 indicates the bed plate and 22 the angle bars. In this form of the device the bed plate is preferably in the form of a malleable casting having its lower surface provided with depending extensions or dowels 23, the interior walls of which are threaded at 24 for engagement with corresponding threads on the rail clamping members 12, the construction and operation of the device being otherwisesimilar to tha-t shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that theimproved chair and rail fastening provides for gage variations on curves and tangents, positively prevents creeping of the rails without the employment of rail anchors and provides for the restoration of gage without respiking and for rail surface variations and the like without respiking. It will also be noted that this form of rail chair and fastening is very simple and durable in construction and not only provides for lateral and vertical adjustment of the rails but is so constructed" as to permit of its use on rails having different base and flange dimensions.
Having-thus described the invention, what is claimed as newT is:
1. Arail chair including a bed plate, an eccentric washer mounted on the bed plate for contact with the base flange of a-rail, and a rail clamping member bearing against the upper face of the washer.

A rail chairincluding a bed plate having an opening therein the wall of which is threaded and provided with an-upstanding abutment, a rail clamping member having a flange adapted to bear against the base of a rail and said abutment and having its lower face inclined downwardly and provided with a depending threaded shank engaging the threaded wall of the opening in the bed plate, and a washer eccentrically mounted on the bedplate and having an openingA therein to receive the shank of the rail clamping member, said washer having a plurality of angular faces movable successively int) engagement with the base flange of the ra1 10.
