Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 3, 1918. Serial No. 232,301.
. staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to means for effecting a closure for the bearing sleeve, the object of our present invention being to provide simple and efficient means whereby the cap or closure of the bearing sleeve may be quickly removed therefrom to expose the head of the bolt for testing purposes, and to so construct the devices that the cap shall be normally held securely in place, the construction also facilitating the quick replacement and locking of the cap after it has been re moved for testing the staybolt.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a side view of the cap or closure, and Fig. 4 is a side view of the locking member.
1 represents a bearing sleeve adapted for connection with a boiler sheet and having a curved interior face 2 which serves as a bearing for the head 3 of a staybolt 4.
The bearing sleeve is provided at its outer end with an annular flange 5 forming a shoulder 6 and within the confines of said flange, the sleeve is providedrwith a seat 7 for the edge of a cap or closure 8. This cap or closure is made with a hemi-spherical cavity for the accommodation of the head of the staybolt and this cavity is of such dimensions and configuration as to provide a clearance space 9 for the head of the staybolt. An angular portion 10 may be formed on the cap or closure for the accommodation of a wrench and near its peripheral edge said cap or closure is provided with a plurality of segmental shoulders 11 which are diagonally disposed to form cams, said shoulders being adapted to overlie the annular flange 5 on the bearing sleeve.
A locking ring or nut 12 is threaded on the sleeve 1 from the inner end thereof and is limited in its outward movement by the shoulder 6. This ring or nut is provided with a plurality of outwardly projecting jaws 13 having inclined or cam lips 14 to engage over the cam shoulders 11 on the cap or closure.
When the cap or closure is placed on the bearing sleeve so that its cam shoulders will alternate with the cam jaws on the locking ring or nut, and then turned, the cam shoulders of the cap will pass behind the cam lips of the jaws on the locking ring or nut and press the cap to its seat. To further clamp the cap to its seat, the ring or nut may be turned slightly, thus tightening the cam jaws of said ring or nut on the cam shoulders of the cap.
By reversing the operations above described, the cap will be unlocked and may be quickly removed to expose the head of the bolt for testing purposes. The cap can be as quickly replaced on the bearing sleeve and locked and will be normally held tightly in place.
Having fully described our invention what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having a cap seat, of a cap having a plurality of lateral cam shoulders, and a ring threaded on said sleeve and having a plurality of cam jaws to engage over the lateral cam shoulders of the cap.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having an annular flange at its outer end, of a cap to seat 011 the bearing sleeve, said cap having a pluspecification in the presence of two subscribrality of lateral cam shoulders to overhe 111g wltnesses.
the annular flange of the sleeve, and a ring JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY threaded 0n the sleeve in rear of said annular flange and provided with a plurality ETHAN DODDS of jaws'ha'ving cam lips to overlie the lat- Witnesses: eral cam shoulders on the cap. S. G..N0'r'r1NGHAM,
In testimony whereof We have signed this R. S. FERGUSON.
