To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK K. LAND- cnsr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description. of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures forboilers. I
In types of flexible staybolt structures in which caps are provided to enclose the bearing of the headed end of the staybolt, it is necessary in many instances to remove such caps periodically for inspection pur poses. The caps have usually been threaded to sleeves in which the bolt heads'have their bearings, and it has been found that when the threaded caps shall have been replaced, it is diflicult to effect a steam tight joint. To provide loose fitting gaskets is not satisfactory, first because they do not sufiiciently cover the shoulders in the sleeves which provide abutments for the caps, and second because they are liable to be lost when the caps are removed.
One object of mypresent invention is to provide, in a staybolt structure, a gasket disposed between the cap and its abutment in the sleeve in such manner that it shall suificiently cover the abutment in one part for the otherpart, to insure a steam tight joint and prevent leakage past the threaded connection between said parts and so that the gasket will be held against accidental loss when a cap is removed.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of my invention, and Figures 2 and 3 are views illustrating the manner in which the gasket may be applied.
1 and 2 represent, respectively, an inner and 7 an outer boiler sheet, the latter being shown as being provided with an opening having a threaded Wall 3 to receive the externally threaded wall of a bearing sleeve 4. The
entenbearing sleeve 4: is provided interiorly with j a rounded seat 5 for the rounded head 6 at the outer end of a staybolt '7, whereby a flexible connection is effected for the staybolt with the outer boiler sheet.
The inner end of the staybolt may be secured in any suitable manner to the inner boiler sheet, as I by threading the bolt through said sheet as at 8 and upsetting its inner end, as at 9.
The bearing sleeve 4 projects outwardly beyond the outer boiler sheet and threaded exterior receives the interiorly threaded portion 10 of a cap 11 which acts as a closure. for the bearing-sleeve, pver the bolt head. V f
-It'is important that the connection of the cap or closure 11 with the bearing sleeve:
shall be kept steam-tight at all times and to insure this, l'employ a gasket 12 which is so applied that it shall so completely cover the abutment in one of said parts for the other part that it shall extend radially beyond the free edges of the screw-threads.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, the cap or closure 11 is formed interiorly inwardly, beyond the threaded portion, with a shoulder or abutment 13 which may be slightly inclined and extends radially beyond the free edge of its thethreads. The gasket, 12, which may be 7 made of copper or a copper alloy, is initially so shaped that it may readily pass the threads when inserted into the cap and caused to rest on the shoulder or abutment 13. In the construction shown in the drawing, the gasket is annular and is initially made somewhat tapering or the shape of a cross-sectional portion of a hollow cone as shown at 14. In applying the gasket, the cap or closurell may be'mounted on a support 15 having a depression of suitable shape and size to receive the'dome portion of the cap when the latter is inverted as shown in Figures 2 and 3. In the drawing,
now applying pressure, with the use of a hammer or otherwise, to the tool. the tapei ing or conical gasket 14 will be expanded and flattened so that it will be caused to lie flat against the shoulder or abutment l3 and to extend radially beyond the free edge oi? the screw threads, thus "forming the gasket 12. The gasket will not only be prevented by the threaded portion of the cap from escaping, but said gasket will sutficiently cover the surface of the shoulder or abutment 13 to insure a steam tight jointwhen the cap is in place on the bearing sleeve.
I do not in this application claim. the method of providing a metal packing between two members herein described,the same being covered in my copending application S rial No. 357,594.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a hollow member having an internally threaded portion and also an internal annular shoulder adjacent to the inner end of the threaded portion of a metal gasket lying flatly against said shoulder and having its peripheral portion extending radially past the free edge of the threads of the threaded portion of said member, whereby said gasketis prevented from escape from said hollow member.
2. The combination with a cap or closure for a staybolt structure, said cap having an internally shoulder near the inner end of said threaded portion of a metal gasket lying flatly against said shoulder and extending radial-- ly beyond the free edge of the threads of said threaded portion.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combination of a bearing sleeve adapted "for connection with a boiler sheet'and having an interior rounded seat for the rounded head of a staybolt, astaybolt having a rounded head mounted on saidseat, said bearing sleeve having a threaded portion. a threaded clo-.
