INK-BOTTLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEKSANDER Z. CHO- LEWSKI, a citizen of Russia, residing at Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, and I, STANISLAW ll/IAJEW- SKI, a citizen of Russia, residin at Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, an State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in receptacles for holding ink, as used upon office desks, tables and the like.

The principal object of the invention is to provide an ink bottle, so arranged that when not in use it may be turned upon its side preventing evaporation of the writing fluid contained therein.

Another object is to provide an ink bottle which, should it be inadvertently overturned, will not spill its contents, therefore permitting the same to be used as a paper weight or for other like purposes.

These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an ink bottle made in accordance with the invention.

In both of the forms shown, a relatively heavy base 10, here shown to be rectangular,

' has secured to it by screw threads 11, an upper element or cover 12, having a conical top 14, at the center of which is a raised annulus 15, containing an opening 16 through which a pen may be inserted to fill the same.

Formed in the base 10, is a semi-spherical chamber 18, a-similar semi-spherical chain-- ber 19 extending into the cover 12, so when the two portions are united by the screw threads so as to present a substantially spherical chamber into which the'passage 16 leads. i .7 p

'lobular casing 20 is loosely contained within the spherical chamber, having an opening 21, of substantially the same area as the opening 16, so that when both are in a vertical position the pen may be readily dipped into the ink 22- and filled in the ordinary manner.

If the bottle be turned over on its side the spherical casing 19, will rotate within the containing chamber, the rotation being caused by a flanged element 23, formed integrally in the sphere, in the center of which is an opening 24, for the pen-point to pass and for the inner casing to be filled.

It will be obvious that, as liquid invariably maintains its level, upon tilting the bottle the liquid will make contact with the flange 23 turning the globular casing 19, so that the openincr 21 will be always upright.

In the modification, shown in Fig. 4:, a similar result is obtained by thickening the walls of the inner casing 20 at a point opposite the opening 21, the thickened portions 25 tending to rotate the casin whenever the body of the bottle is moved rom a vertical position.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a neat appearing, serviceable ink bottle has been disclosed which, when not in active use, i

is placed upon its side preventing the fluid contained within the inner casing 19, from loss due to evaporation, while, when the bottle is in a vertical position access may be had to its contents without the trouble of flange formed with said casing, having a central opening therethrough, said casing being adapted to contain a liquid adapted'to fill the space below said flange, and an opening in said flange, said opening being alinable with the opening through the upper portion of said bottle.
