To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY A. CORDRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Table, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a table and particularly pertains to a combined table and cabinet.

It is the object of this invention to provide a table embodying foldable or hinged extension panels and a movable false top adapted to be raised and lowered on rocking of the panels whereby articles on the false top may be quickly concealed on folding the panels.

Another object is to provide a simple and eflective means for actuating the false top without the use of weights or springs and by direct connection to the foldable panels.

Another object is to provide a table of the above character which can be manufac tured at small cost,v and which consists of few parts dependable in their operation and not liable to get out of order.

Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In carrying out my invention in its preferred embodiment as here shown, I provide a rectangular box frame 6 open at its top and fitted with an outwardly projecting ledge 7 forming the projecting edges of the table top. The bottom of the frame is preferably open and covered with a screen 8, but it may be sealed if desired. Supporting legs 9 carry the frame and are detachably connected thereto so. that they may be re moved and packed in the box frame for shipment. ncction between vthe frame and legs the latter are rabbeted at one corner to receive the corners of the frame to form a shoulder 10 on which the frame seats. Screws 11 or other suitable fastenings are employed to attach the legs to the frame.

The essence of the invention resides in the table top construction which comprises a false top panel 12 movable vertically in the frame, a pair of side foldable panels 13 hinged at 14: to the opposite side ledges of the frame, and connections whereby the top panel is raised and lowered by swinging the panels. The connections between the panels and false top consist of chains 15 or other suitable flexible members. A pair of the chains are connected to hook brackets 16 on the underside of the opposite edges of the false top and extend upwardly through notches 17. The outer portions of the chains pass through channels 18 on the ledges and their terminals are secured to hook plates 19 in channels 20 on the folding panels. The folding panels are designed to be extended horizontally on opposite sides of the frame in which position they may be supported in any desired manner, hinged brackets 21 being here shown as employed for this purpose. The chains are of such length that when the panels 13 are disposed in a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1 the false top 12 will be disposed flush with the upper surface of the ledge 18 and the panels 13.

When the panels 13 are disposed in their folded position as shown in Fig. 2 the chains will depend vertically adjacent the inner side walls of the box frame thus positioning the false top in a suspended position below the folded top, thus forming a compartment in which articles may be stored and con cealed. As a means for providing space for tall articles, such as bottles, the false top may be fitted with a depending well 22.

In the operation of the invention the brackets 21 are swung outwardly and the panels 13 are swung upwardly and outwardly to theirhorizontal position on the brackets '21. The upward movement of the panels acts through the chains to elevate the. false top and the articles carried thereon into its uppermost position to form with the panels a continuous table top.

hen it is desired to conceal articles within the compartment, they are disposed on the false top whereupon the folding side panels are swung to their inward position as shown in Fig. 2 .thus causing the false top to move .to its lowermost position. The folding panels are of such width that when disposed in their folded position they will completely cover the box frame and its contents. The abutting edges of the panels may be rabbeted to form overlapping tongues 23 and the panel carrying the uppermost tongue may be engaged by a latch 24: of any suitable"description whereby the panels may belocked in their folded position.

The box frame may be utilized as a packing box -in shipment in which event the false top may be fastened in its lowermost position-by dowel pins 25 or the like which are inserted through the side panels of the box frameinto engagement with the edges of the false top; Any other suitable means may be employed for retaining the false top in its lowermost position. In shipping the legs may be removed and packed within the compartment formed in the box frame.

As a means for permitting the top panels to be swung downwardly as indicated by the dotted lines a in Fig. 1 while the false top" is in its uppermost position, the under side of the hingedly connected edges of the panels and ledge are beveled at an angle of f5 degrees as indicated at 26.

' \Vhile I have shown and described a specific embodiment of my invention, it is manifest that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as set'forth in the appended claims.

The chains 15 are of such length that when the top panels 18 are in their closed take'up theslack in the, chains and draw the latter taut when the panels are swung to their extended positlon.

In a table, a box frame, a false top vertically movable therein, a pair of panels hinged on the sides of said frame to depend therefrom, adapted to be swung inwardly to cover the frame and false top, flexible connections between said panels and false top whereby the latter will be suspended from the panels when the latter are in their folded position and by means of which the false top can be raised by swinging the hinged panels upwardly and outwardly, and means whereby said panels may be supported horizontally in their extended post tion.

In a table, a box frame, an outwardly projecting ledge on the upper edges thereof, vertically swinging panels hinged t the outer edges of the ledge on the sides of the frame to depend therefrom, said panels and the ledges carrying same being formed with alined channels adjacent their ends,a false topvertically movable in said frame, flexi.- ble members connected to the edges of said false top and connected to the hinged panels to support the false top and adapted to extend in the channels on the ledge and panel when the latter are in their horizontal position, said connections serving as a means for raising and lowering the false top on swinging the hinged panel, and foldable means on the box frame forsupportin'g the top panels in a horizontal position in alinement' with the ledge and false top when the latter is inits uppermost position.
