Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CARMINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jacksonville, county of Duval, and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Portable Stand, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The present invention, while adapted to stands generally, relates more particularly to stands for railway trains and depots for the vending of publications, soda water, stationery, tobacco in its different forms, and other goods usually sold in such places.

In the vending of goods on trains, loss from theft and other causes is not infrequent owing to the inadequate provision made for the proper storage and safe-guarding of the supplies furnished to the vender; and it is an important part of my invention to provide a portable folding structure that may be temporarily set up in the space between two car seats, and aord ample accommodation for the storage and proper display of goods in large variety and in desirable quantities.

The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.

The panel 17 is hinged at its upper end as at 18 (Fig. 3) to swing upwardly, thereby providing a door-way at the front end. A cord or rope 19 is connected as at 20 with the panel 17 at the inside near the bottom, and runs over idlers 21 on the top 10a and on back panel 111 near the top, the free end of the cord carrying a counter-balance weight 22 for the panel 17. vThe upward swinging movement of the panel 17 may be limited by a stop 23 at the inside of the fixed back panel 111 of the superstructure. To hold the door in closed position, suitable fastening means is provided consisting, in the present instance, of a hasp 2a on the panel adapted to engage a staple 25 so that if desired, the door may be locked as by a pad-lock 25a (Fig. 5).

In connection with the base structure and superstructure a lateral folding structure is provided at each side to constitute lateral extensions on the base and superstructure and to overhang at each side above the base so that when the base structure 10 is placed between'two car seats, the folding structure may be set up to extend over said seats. The lateral extension at each side consists of a vertically swinging bottom wing v26 connected by hinges 2b"L with the base structure 10 at the top of the latter along the side thereof. Finally, there '1s a free end panel 34 at one side and a free end panel 34a at the other side, both being connected by hinges 35 with the adjacent vertical panels 32. -1.- A folding stand comprising a base structure; a superstructure on.sa1d base of the base structure and hingedto the latterV near the top, a vertically swinging roof wing hinged to the sald superstructurefat the top, and a series of verticalpanels hingedly connected with one another at opposed vertical edges, the said panels of the folding extension consisting of a panel forminga foldable extension ofthe adjacent fixed panel of the superstructure and hinged to the latter, in-

termediate panels-forming a side of the folding structure, Yand a panel at the free endof the folding structure andformingzwfolding 120 extension of the adjacent vertically swinging panel of the superstructure.

2. A folding stand comprising a base structure; a superstructure on said base structure comprising a fixed panel at one end and a swinging panel at the other end constituting a door; and a lateral folding structure forming a lateral extension of the base and snperstructures, said folding structure consisting of a series of panels hinged together at their adjacent verticaledges, the panel at one end of the structure being hinged to the fixed panel on the superstructure and the panel at the opposite end of the folding structure being movable to a position into approximate alinement with the swinging panel of the superstructure and provided with a hinged auxiliary panel constituting an auxiliary door adjacent to said swinging panel.

3. A stand of the character described comprising a folding structure and a relatively fixed structure, said first mentioned structure having side and end members foldably connected with one another, one of said end members being hinged to the sa-id fixed structure7 and foldable members on the fixed structure forming the top and bottom of the folding structure, and a flexible securing device of a length to extend between the said top and bottom members when the latter are unfolded, said securing device having a detachable engagement with the bottom member, and means to engage the said end of the securing device and the fixed structure when the structure is folded.

4. A stand of the character described oomprising a folding structure and a relatively fixed structure, said fixed structure comprising a base and a superstructure, and said folding structure comprising the following elements: top and bottom wings hinged to the top of the base to fold in a vertical plane, top wings hinged to the top of the superstructure, folding sides formed of a series of panels hinged to one another, one end panel having a hinge connection at a vertical edge thereof with the superstructure, and legs hinged to the bottom wings.
