FOLDING PACKAGE-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
Application filed June 19, 1918. Serial No, 240.720.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. Burns, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inFolding Package-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.
i This invention relates to what are known as folding or knockdown package boxes of the class used by tailors and others in packing or shipping clothes or other articles, one of which is shown, and described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,032,645 granted to me July 16, 1912, and the object of this invention is to provide a box of the class specified, composed of top and bottom parts which are exactly the same in form and construction,.except that the top part is slightly larger than the bottom part to permit of the bottom part being inserted therein, or the top part being passed down over the bottom part, which parts are also adapted to be folded compactly together and which are similar in form when so folded and approximately of the same dimensions; a still further object being to provide a box of the class specified which is stronger and more durable than other boxes of its class, and which is composed entirely of fibrous material and which has no metallic fastening or securing, devices of any kind or class; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a box of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank form used in the construction of my improved box, or the separate parts thereof, the said form or blank being used for making each part of the box, or the top and bottom thereof.
Fig. 2 a similar view but showing only one corner portion of the blank and showing said corner portion on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 3 a View showing one corner portion of one part of the box in sectlon and indi cating the method of folding the separate parts of the blank to form a part of the Fig. 4 a View similar to Fig. 3 but showing said parts completely folded;
Fig. 5 a perspective View of the bottom part of the box complete;
7 Fig. 6 a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5 and on an enlarged scale; and,
Fig. 7 a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5 but showing the complete box, or the top and bottom parts connected.
As hereinbefore stated each part of my improved box, or the top and bottom members thereof is made from blanks of the same form, one of which is shown at a in Fig. 1, and this blank is stamped or out from cardboard or similar material used in making boxes of this class, and said blank is oblong and rectangular in form and comprises a central body member a two parallel side members 6 and two parallel end members 0, and the body a and side members b are separated by score or folding lines 03, while the body and end members 0 are separated by score or folding lines 6, and these lines cross each other at f and form corner and lock members 9 which are integrally connected with the end members 0 but are separated from the side members Z) by slots h which extend from the outer edges of the side members 6 to the folding lines (Z, and as thus constructed the corner members 9 are free to fold on the end members 0 but are independent of the side members Z), and the outer corners of the corner members 9 are cut out to form V-shaped recesses 9 the inner walls of which are preferably beveled inwardly or inclined as shown at 9 The corner members 9 are also provided adjacent to the score or folding lines 01 with short slots 2' which are parallel with said score or folding lines (Z and communicate with the slots h, and formed in the end portions of the side members 6 adjacent to the corner members 9 are slots 7' which range diagonally of said end portions and at an angle of 45, or approximately so, to the inner corners of the corner and lock members g, and in this connection attention is also called to the fact that the transverse dimensions of said corner and lock members in both directions are the same as the transverse dimensions of the side members 6 and end members 0.
It will be understood that in folding a blank such as that shown and described to form the separate parts of my improved box, or the top and bottom thereof, the central body portion a of the blank forms the bottom or body portions of said parts and the side members 6 and the ends a of the blank form the side and end walls of said wardly and inwardly, and in this last'operation the parts 9 of thecorner members 9 are passed inwardly through the slots j, as clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.
When this operation is fully completed as shown in Fig. L, the edges 9 of the parts 9 rest on the bottom'or body a of the box member or part, while the recesses g in the corner members 9 fit in the outer ends of the slots 9' in the parts I), and the inner walls 7' of the slots j fit in'the slots 2' in the corner members g,-and it will be observed that the distance between the points 72 and as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, or the dimensions of the corner members 9 along this line is less than the length of the slots j, and this permits of the free passage of the parts 9 of the corner members 9 through said slots andalso of a slight movement of the parts 9 necessary in theoperation of disconnectingthe parts and knocking down the separate parts of the box members in the operation of folding-and packing the same.
ThecOrner members 9 must be rectangular in form, or approximately so, and particularly the corner portions 9 of the parts 9 thereof, or the corners g at 00' in Figs. 2, 3 and t so that the edges 9 of said parts 9*, and particularly the corners g at a; will bear on the body or bottom portion of the box member-or members as shown in Fig. 4c. in order to secure the proper operation of the lock members g* and prevent the tilting thereof and to secure a positive lock action between the points is and m in Fig. 4 and between the points 70 and 0a.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the successful use of the blank a informing a'box or box member depends on the form and dimensions of the corner and lock members '9 compared with the transverse dimensions of the side and end portions, and the slots 2' and recesses g in said corner and lock members and the slots j in the side portions, and the relative position ofsaid slot and recesses all of which must be maintained as shown and described, in forming said blank.
It will also be seen that the corner members g of the blank not only form locks for holding the parts of the blank in proper form for use as a box member or members but said corner members also reinforce the ends of the side portions of the box by reason of the fact that the width thereof is equal to the widthio fvsaid side members, and make said side members more strong and durable than in other boxes of this class and prevent the bending, or mashing or compression thereof in ordinary use.
In Fig. 7 of the accompanying drawing, the bottom part of the complete box is shown at a and the top partiat a andsaid top part covers and incloses the bottom part,-all that is necessary being to pass the top part down over the bottom part as in other boxes of this class, it being understood that, as hereinbefore stated, there is no difference in the construction of said parts, except in their transverse and longitudinal dimensions, the top part being necessarily slightly larger than the bottom part; and while I have shown and described the corner members '9 as formed on the end portions 0 and the slots j as formed in the side portions 6, it will be understood that this arrangement may be reversed, if desired, and the said corner members may be formed on the side portions 6 and the slots j in the end portions 0; and while I have also shown vand described the details of the construction which I prefer in forming the blank or blanks from which the separate parts of my improved box are made, my invention is not limited to such exact details, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, and it will also be observed that the dimensions of the box, or the separate parts thereof, depends entirely on the size or dimensions of' the blank from which the box, or the separate parts thereof are made.
Having fully described my invention, what I claimas new-and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is V V 1. The herein described box or box member composed of a blank comprising a rectangular bodyportion, folding side portions. and folding end portions, saidside and end portions being of the same transverse dimensions, and the end portions being provided at their ends with folded corner and lock members, thetransverse dimensions of which in bothdirections are the same-asthetransverse dimensions of the side and "end por tions, said side portions being also provided adjacent to their ends with diagonal slots which range-at an angle to the inner corners of the corner and lock members, and said corner and lock members being provided in their outer'corners with recesses and adjacent to their inner corners with slots which open in the direction-of the side portions.
