GATE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application led November 5, 1915. Serial No. 59,719.
Vgate bracing which is simple and eiiicient in construction, giving the gate rigidity and stability, making the construction self squaring in assembling, preventing the sagging at the hinges and by which the same set of steels or irons forming the bracing system, may be used with gates of different sizes. i
The principal object of this invention is the provision of a system of gate bracing which includes a plurality of bracing members adapted to be disposed transversely to the ordinary longitudinal. members of a gate and other bracing members adapted to be diagonally arranged on the gate and to be secured adjacent the upper and lower ends of one of said first mentioned bracing members and converging so as to intersect each other and to be secured to an intermediate one of said first mentioned bracing members.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and then sought to be dened in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and which shows merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, one embodiment of my invention, it being understood that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claim without digressing from my inventive idea.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 represents a gate constructed according to my invention, and utilizing the new system of gate bracing;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the hinge portion of this gate.
In the disclosure made in the drawings I show a gate composed of longitudinal members 1 which are preferably of wood and also having pairs of transverse or cross pieces or members 2 which are preferably of angle iron having their horizontal` flanges secured to the longitudinal members 1. These cross pieces or members are disposed in pairs in opposed'relation on opposite sides of the gate. At the rear end of the gate I provide the hinge members 3 which includethe U-shaped strap portion et having the extended side members 5. The hinge block 6, Fig. 2, is mounted therein and has an opening to receive the pintle on the lag screw, whereby an upper and a lower hinge are provided and the. extended side members 5 extend over the end cross piece or member 2, the vertical flange thereof being cut away'as at 8, for that purpose.
I utilize in connection with this structure `on each side of the gate, the pair of diagonally extending bracing members 10 which are secured near the ends of the end cross piece or member at the hinge end of the gate as at 11. These diagonally extending bracingv members on each side 0f the gate converge and intersect each other as at 19 and are secured to an intermediate cross piece or member beyond the point of intersection as at 20, it being understood that a plurality of apertures 20 are provided in the intermediate cross piece or member. These holes will permit irregularity in positioning the bracing members on the gate and for the reception of the bolts to secure the bracing members to the cross piece. The extended portions of the hinges are preferably secured to the diagonal bracing members at a point removed from the hinge end thereof Vas at 13. These extensions of the hinge members form supplemental bracing members between the cross piece or member at the hinge end of the gate and the diagonal bracing members.
As stated hereinbefore, these parts are duplicated on each side of the gate so that the major triangular truss including the end cross piece or member and the diagonally extending bracing members, is provided on each side of the gate, and in the angles or corners of this major triangular truss, I provide, what I call, minor triangular trusses. These minor triangular trusses are formed in two instances, by the end cross piece or member, the diagonally extending bracing members and the supplemental bracing members as at 16 and 17, and in the other instance by the end portions of the diagonal bracing members and the intermediate cross piece or member, as at 18.
It is to be noted that the supplemental brace members or extensions of the hinges pass over the end cross piece or member and .preferably under the diagonally extending bracing members l0, these bracing members l0 being secured on top of the end cross piece or member 2, and under the intermediate-cross piece or member, as clearly shown gates of dierent sizes, the cross-pieces or members being arranged equi-distantly apart so as to retain the attractive symmetrical appearance oi the gate and accordingly, the gate is self squaring in assembling and the possibility of the bracing members cutting or shearing 0E the bolts isentirely obviated. The strain is taken olif the gate hinges so as to prevent non-sagging.
What I claim A gate structure, including a plurality of spaced longitudinal members, a plurality of pairs of transverse bracing members, said pairs of bracing members adapted lto be bolted to said longitudinal members, one pair of said bracing members provided intermediate their ends With a group of holes to permit irregularity in positioning said bracing members on said fgate and for the reception of the bolts to secure the bracing members to a certain .longitudinal member and diagonally disposed bracing members, and a pair of diagonally disposed bracing members crossing `each other in advance of said last mentioned transverse `bracingV members, and being bolted Vtogether and `to said transverse bracing members.
