Description

. ur'ro'n A. WEBLEY, or ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA;
PRESS.
Specification of Lettersiatent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed December is, 1915. Serial No. 67,616.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Urron A. WEBLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkins, in thecounty of Randolph and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in'presses' and the principal object of the invention is to provide an attachment for buckets and jars by means of which said jars may be converted into presses for expressing the juices from fruits and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which is particularly simple in construction and may be readily attached to different sizes and kinds of buckets or jars without in any way injuring the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device having rubber pads for increasing the frictional engagement of the attaching ears on the sides of the container.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a press constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view through the attaching ears and showing the follower in elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a bucket or similar receptacle comprising a bottom 2 having the cylindrical or frusto-conical side walls 3 at its periphery.
The attachment comprises a pair of ears designated generally 4 comprising a body 5 provided with a slot 6 and a threaded opening 7 in which the set screw 8. is threaded. This opening 7 communicates with the slot 6 so that the set screw will engage the band of the device and hold the same firmly in place. Formed integral with the body and extending upwardly therefrom is an extension 9 formed with the enlarged recess 10 with which the opening 11 communicates.
This opening 11 is adapted to receive the hook 12of the bail 13 which is arched and extends transversely of the device. Suitable plugs of rubber or a similar friction lncreasing material designated by the numeral 14: are embedded in the body 5 and are adapted for engagement with the upper edges of the side walls 3 so as to prevent the cars from slipping from the receptacle. A suitable outwardly curved portion 15 is formed centrally of the bail 13 and is adapted to avoid interference with the screw threaded stem which will be more fully herelnafter described. A suitable block 16 provided with a centrally located screw threaded aperture17 is attached to the bail by means of suitable staples 18, and the screw threaded opening in said block is adapted to receive the threaded stem of a device which will be more fully hereinafter described.
The follower is designated by the numeral 19 and comprises a disk having secured centrally thereof, a socket 20 provided with the under bearing '21, which bearing is adapted to form a seat for the ball head 22 formed at the lower end of the threaded shank 23 which is threaded into the opening 17 and is provided at its upper end with a handle 24: by means of which the stem is adapted to be turned.
The band designated by the numeral 25 may be of a continuous piece or may be composed of two separate sections and when the device is assembled it will be seen that the band extends through th slot 5 and is clamped firmly in place by the set screws 7. In applying the ears and band to the wall 3, the band is placed about the wall 3 with the ears thereon and by pulling the ends of the band together until the band tightly clamps the wall, the set screws of the ears are then turned tightly against the band to hold the same against movement on the wall 3. The pads 14: then frictionally engage the wall 3, preventing the ears and band from slipping thereon. The securing band is thus held closely adjacent th usual shoulder or bead with which the bucket or jar, which is indicated more or less diagrammatically, is provided adjacent its upper end, as will be understood.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that when the device is assembled in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the handle 24 may be turned thereby forcing the follower 19 downwardly and due to the frictional engagement of the pads 14k with the side wall 3 and the container 1, the bail and cars will remain stationary thus causing the juices of the material within the container to Joe expressed. The juices will be forced upwardly through the perforations 19 of the plunger into the jar, as will be readily understood, from which the juices may be poured into a suitable receptacle.v
What is claimed is l. A press structure adapted for use in connection with an ordinary cylindrical receptacle comprising a pair of cars, means for clamping said ears in engagement with the exterior of the receptacle, friction pads carried by the receptacle engaging surfaces of said cars, a compressing follower, and operating means for said follower connected to said ears.
2. In a press structure adapted for use in connection with a container of standard construction, a pair of securing cars, a securing band carried thereby and adapted to have its efiective length varied so as to accommodate containers of dlfierent slzes,
a follower adapted to operate in a container 7 struction, a pair of slotted securing ears, a
split band inserted through said ears and having its end portions overlapping so as to have its effective length varied, means carried by one of said ears for securing the overlapping end portions of th band together, a follower adapted to be operated in a container upon which the structure is mounted, and means secured to said ears for operating the follower.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
