Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR SABoRsKY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Lakewood, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the invention is to provide a simplified form of construction adapted to print matter upon blanks successively.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a machine having parts which work automatically to reduce to a minimum the labor required to operate the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved printing machine adapted to print or impress subject-matter upon one side of a series of blanks, such as cards, and to print the same or constantly changing subject-matter upon the opposite side of a series of blanks.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved printing machine in which separate printing mechanisms are correlated for conjoint or separate operation whereby a series of blanks can be printed with the same subject-matter on either or both sides, or different subject-matter printed on one side of each blank.
The invention has reference to that class of printing and addressing machines in which a series of blanks are fed one at a time to separate printing positions and in which a series of printing slugs are first stored in a magazine from which they are automatically propelled to the printing position of the minor printing ,device and thence in turn are propelled to a separate magazine into which they fall by gravity onto an automatically movable support.
I preferably provide yfor the removal of the slug storing magazine and its alinement with the slug receiving magazine so that the used slugs can vbe transferred back to the storing magazine in a simple manner and the latter replaced by-a magazine filled with a new series of slugs.
The invention includes automatically acting mechanism whereby the blanks will be propelled with precision to the main printing device, which is shown to be preferably a rotating drum or segment, `and in which the movements of the drum control the movements of feed rollers for the blanks, so that the speed of the peripheries of drum and feed rollers will always be substantially equal and no slip can occur.
The invention also includes a reciprocating device, hereinafter called a shuttle, for automatically transferring the addressing slugs or cards from the magazine, which may be removable, to their printing position, and-for automatically returning them to another magazine, which may be stationarily arranged in alinement with the reinovable magazine.
It includes a reciprocating plunger which receives the slugs from the shuttle, impresses them upward against the blank and then lowers them, whereupon the aforesaid shuttle removes them from the plunger and transfers them to a magazine. It also includes automatically acting mechanism for lowering the addressing slugs in the magazine, the distance of the thickness of one slug as fast as they are transferred from said plunger.
The invention includes an upper detachable magazine and a lower fixed magazine, which are provided with alined openings through which the slugs collected in the lower magazine can be elevated and restored to the upper magazine.
The invention further includes intermitting'mechanism for operating the reciprocating slug transferring shuttle at times when the plunger is not in motion, and intermittin mechanism for feeding the blanks between t ie printing strokes of the plunger, thus permitting the slugs to remain under the blanks in printing position while the impression is being made thereon.
The invention includes also a cam for operating the plunger which impresses the slugs upon the blanks and which is provided with two rest surfaces, one permitting the deposit of the slugs upon the plunger, and the other permitting the removal of the slugs therefrom.A
The invention accomplishes the desired objects heretofore enumerated by means of the combination and arrangement of parts and construction of the various details hereinafter described, exemplified in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims, but modifications thereof can be made which do not depart from the scope of the claims.

In the drawings, 1 is the frame of the machine; 2 is the main driving shaft which may be operated by any suitable power and from which all the movements of the machine are preferably obtained.
3 is the printing drum which'is mounted loosely upon a shaft 6. and preferably detachably connected with the same by means of a clutch 32. The printing drum maybe operatively connected with the main shaft 2 'by means of spur gears 4, 5, 4, and 5. 3X indicates means, preferabljy7 a roller, for supplying ink to the printing devices on the drum 3. The roller 3X may be mounted on standards in any suitable manner. 3 is the pressure roller, preferably an idler, the shaft WV therefor being-'mounted in the bearings E, E,=which may be adjusted by-means of eccentrics E, E', (Fig. 13b) mounted upon a divided shaft E2. The vshaft E2 is rotated by means of a lever- E3.
E4 indicates a stop to limit the movement of-the lever E3. The stop E4 is preferably adjustably mounted, in any well known-manner, on an arc E5 which 'is fixed to the frame 1.
The shaft E2 is divided to permit adjustment of the eccentrics E independently. F
indicates a sleeve surrounding the innerends of the sections constituting the shaft E2. F2 indicates a scale (see Fig. 13d) to indicate the adjustment of the shaft.
6 is a spur gear upon the shaft 6 of the printing drum, which gear is provided with a blank portion 7, and 8 is a similar spur gear having a corresponding blank surface 9 correspond-ing fto the blank surface 7 of the gear 6. By means of thesegears the intermittent movements of the machine are obtained.
Upon the hub ofthe gear ,Sis-mounted the sprocket wheel 10 operating the chain 11, and thereby the sprocket wheel lupon the shaft 13 of one of a pair of feed `rolls 14, 14 for the (blanks. The rolls 14, 14 are preferably placedv in adjustable bearings 142, 142 in the bed plate. The feed rolls 14, 14 are provided with interlocking gears 15, 15. A second pair of `rolls 16, 16, are operated by sprocket wheels 17, 17 a chain 18 upon the lower roll shafts and spurgears 19, 19, upon the shafts of the rolls 16, 16. A platform 2O supports the blank as it is fred by the feed rolls to the printing drum.
The relative diameters of the rolls to the printing d-rum are such .that the speed of their peripheries is precisely the same, which prevents any possibility of the cylinder or drum slipping or causing* smearing of the ink upon-the blanks. The rolls are preferably formed of hard material, such as steel, which may be spring operated to firmly grip the blank between them.
At 21 is shown the boX in which the blanks 22 22, are stored. The rear wall 23 and front wall 37 of the sectional box are preferably inclined to make the rear edges of the blanks overhang one another, and a knife plate 25 having a thin edge Q5 and mounted upon a sliding rbottom 26 feeds the blanks one at a time to the feed rolls.
The movement of the bottom is also intermittent, being preferably controlled by the intermitting gears 6 and 8. The movement of the sliding bottom is designed to coperate with the movement of the rolls, and is preferably operated by means of an eccentric 30, carried by a hollow shaft 31 which is sleeved' over and adjustably secured to a gear 27 fixed to a shaft 28. The gear 27 may be drivenby a gear 29 upon one of the feed roll shafts. The eccentric 30 is arranged to engage bearing walls 32, which are provided on a member secured to and depending from the bottom 26. The walls 32 are arranged in front and rear of the eccentric 30 so as to be engaged thereby as it rotates to move the bottom 26 forwardly and rearwardly.
The movable bottom moves at less speed than the feed rolls so that when the blank comes into contact with the rolls they carry it away from the bottom until they intermit, the blank being then in the addressing position where it lies until printed.
The amount of lead or timing of the sliding bottom and knife relatively to the rolls, so as to control the position of the blank at the printing position at the opening 20a, when the address is printed thereon, and also changing the width of margin for the main printed communication, is obtained by means of an adjustable connection between the gear 27 and sleeved shaft 31, which carries the eccentric 30. In Figs. 5 and 16a, a crank 33 is shown upon the sleeved shaft 31 and a pin 34 on said crank passes through a circular slot 35 in said gear 27, and is clamped thereto by means of a nut 35a.
The relative positions of the eccentric and crank to the gear 27 and shaft 28 can then be read in the graduated edge 36 of the slot. By means of this adjustment the blank can be advanced to be engaged by the rolls at any desired period of their movement, and since the rolls rotate during a definite period only, the entire travel of the blank up to the addressing position can be determined by timing accurately the moment when the rolls first commence tol feed the blank.
The front wall 37, preferably having the same inclination as the rear wall of the blank holding box, is adjustably attached to the frame, whereby it may be positioned to prevent more than one blank from passing out at a time. The blanks pass underneath the lower edge of the front wall 37 as they are fed to the rolls, and are thereby prevented from flying up at the forward edge when passed out from under a pile of blanks.
This plate 37 is accurately adjusted to the thickness of the blank to be fed by means of camsC, C, and an operating rod C Vtherefor.
. The blank holding box comprises angular plates 21 adjustably mounted upon a bar 38 for transverse adjustment to adapt them to the size of the blanks. The bar 38 is attached to terminal angleJ bars 39, 39, which are longitudinally adjustable upon the bed plate. 40, 40, indicate set screws for securing the bars 39 in any position to which they may be adjusted.
The sliding bottom is mounted in guides 41, 41, formed in the opposite sides of the bed plate, and the feeding knife 25 is guided in grooves 42, 42, in the movable bottom, and clamped when properly adjusted by means of the screws 43, 43, as shown in Figs. 7 and 13. The knife edge 25 itself is slightly raised above the surface of the knife so as to take hold of the lowest blank.
This edge can be made adjustable to adapt it for feeding blanks differing in thickness by pivoting in a recess, B', in the knife plate a separate blade B, as shown in Fig. 15a. rlhe blade B may be provided with a multiple number of edges any one of which may be arranged for engagement with the blanks by removing the blade B from the recess B and disposing the desired edge at the forward end of the recess.
B? indicates screws which serve to adjust the blade B at different angles so as to cause its front wall or edge to project above the surface of the plate any desired distance.
Graduated scales 44 and 45 on the meeting edges of the knife and movable bottom (Fig. 5) and 46 on the supporting bracket 39, 39, for the box are shown in Figs. 5, 14, and 15, by means of which accurate adjustments can be made for the size of the blank.
50 indicates a plunger vertically movable in a suitable bearing formed in a block G which is carried by the frame 1. At its upper end the plunger 50 is provided with a head 50 which receives the address slugs S and moves them upwardly through the opening 20a. L indicates horizontal guides through which the slugs S are delivered to theplunger 50 or head 50 thereof. The guides L are provided in the walls of the block G. 51 indicates a platen against which the plunger 50 presses each slug when it moves upwardly, and this effects printing on a blank which has been delivered to a position over the opening 20a. The platen 51 may be adjustably mounted in a cross bar 52.

platen is preferably adjusted by means of the three screws V, V, V set in the bar 52 in staggered relation to each other so that the level can be adjusted in all directions.
rEhe head 50 of the plunger is provided with an extended edge H which receives thc slug and keeps it from falling off sidewise. The plunger operates upon the slug in the guide block G at a point intermediate between the two pairs of feeding rollers and the blank is held firmly by them while being printed. The plunger then falls to a lower level carrying the slug with it which is then removed from the plunger through horizontal guides L, L, in the guide block Gr.
These movements of the plunger accompanied by two rest periods of the plunger while the slug is being placed upon the plunger and while it is being withdrawn therefrom, are obtained by means of a cam 53 mounted upon a shaft 54 operatively connected with the drive shaft by means of spiral gears 55, 56, and bevel gears 57, 58, and shaft 59, thus giving the cam a continuous uniform rotary movement, speeded to equal one rotary movement of the printing drum.
Operatively connected with the intermittent movement of the machine is the device for withdrawing the addressing slugs from the upper removable magazine at the upper level L, and advances them to the plunger upon 4that level, and which, after the plunger has operated and moved downwardly until its head is in the plane of the guides L, withdraws the slug therefrom and moves it through the guides L to the lower magazine (see Figs. 5, 7, 10, 11,-12 and 13).
60 is a magazine preferably removably mounted upon a hollow head 61 of the cross bar 52. The magazine 60 is preferably provided with side ribs 62, 62, which are insertible -in grooves 63, 68, formed in the head 61. The magazine is adapted to hold a pile of slugs S and permit them to slide downwardly as one after another they are fed to the printing position.

Each of the pivots 65 is mounted in a lug 65a formed integrally with the adjacent side wall and overhanging liange of the head 61. Surrounding each pivot 65 is a spring 65h which normally operates to maintain the arms in the position shown in Fig. 11. The inner ends of the arms 65 are provided with bent ends which engage the bars 64, las shown in Fig. 11. The arms 65 extend late-rally into position to be engaged by the opposite ends of a yoke shaped lever 66 having engaging lugs 66 for operating the rock arms 65. Then it is desired to separate the bars 64, 64, to open the mouth or lower end of the receptacle, the lever 66 is swung upwardly. This operation serves to swing the levers 65 about their pivots and to move the bars 64: away from each other. When :the bars 64: are thus operated, `the opening into the upper magazine is unobstructed vand the slugs may then be moved from the lower vmagazine upwardly thereirrto, `or to a position above the .bars 64. The lever 66 is preferably pivoted =to opposite `sides 4of the head 61.
The upper edge .of the holding bars is in `the same horizontal line with the Vguides L, L at the upper level on which the slugs are fed sto the plunger. Below this finagazine yand having an opening in line with the opening in :the upper magazine is a. lower magazine Y67, the receiving end of which is placed below the lower horizontal level yof guides L, L in which the slugs are returned from the plunger, and they drop .one at a time therein upon a movable shelf B3 which automatic-ally falls the thickness of `one slug before the next is carried thereto.
The slugs pass from the aipper magazine t-o the plunger-one at a time -upon the Iupper level in horizontal .guides L in the previousl-y mentioned ,guide block G, and are returned' through the guides L in said guide block at the lower level to the lower magazine where they drop upon said shelf, as shown in Figs. 8 `and 10.

4'One of the typeholding slugs is shown in Fig. 17 and is provided with .a notch 75 which the finger'73 engages and thus perfect alinement is assured. The slug is provided with fdownwardly and inwardly turned sides 76, which an yoverhanging edge H of the plunger engages.

This rack is given an intermittent reciprocating movement by means .of a connecting rod 85, and crank 86 mounted upon the end of shaft 28 'opposite to that to which the gear 27 is secured, and which receives the intermittent movement from the feed rolls for the blanks. l
The difference in speed of the gears 81 and 82 gives a quick movement to the shuttle, and moves a slug to the plunger and removes it therefrom to the lower magazine, in one reciprocation of the plunger.
l preferably provide means indicated as an entirety at J, for maintaining any desired slug in the printing position whereby the same address can be printed on the blanks as they are successively fed to such position. TheseV means may be provided between the cra-nk 86 and the adjacent por- Of these means, J7 indicates `a rock shaft rotatably mounted in a bearing formed: inthe hub of the crank 86. JX indicates a key fixed, to the shaft J7 and preferably provided with two wings J J 2. The key J x is preferably arranged in a slot or space provided between a pair of lugs providedV on the hub of the crank V86. J3 indicates a slot formed in the shaft 28 and arranged to receive the wing J when the shaft J Y is rocked to a predetermined position thereby locking the crank and shaft together. J 4 indicates a groove formed in the adjacent wall of the frame 1 and arranged to receive the wing J2 when the rock shaft J 7 is moved to another position, thereby locking the hub of the crank 86 to the frame 1. The wings J, J2 are constructed and arranged so that when the wing J engages the groove J3, the wing J2 is out of engagement with the walls of the slot J4; on the other hand, when the wing J2 engages the walls' of the groove J f, the wing J is out of engagement with t'he walls of the slot J 3, so that when the parts are in this latter-position, the shaft is disconnected from the crank. The key J X is flattened on one edge, as shown 'at J3, to be engaged by a spring J5, the purpose of which engagement is toV maintain the rock shaft in either position to which it may be moved. The parts just described key J f can only operate to lock rthe hub of the crank 86 tothe frame 1 when the crank has movedan addressing slug into the printing position. Y
A movable shelf B3 for the lower magazine (see Figs. 2, 8 and 4) is lowered the thickness of' one slug during the one complete movement of the plunger in the following manner.
One of the roller shafts of the rolls 16 is extended and a bevel gear 88 thereon engages a bevel gear 89 upon a vertical shaft 90. Movable up and down upon this shaft and keyed thereto is a spur gear 91 engaging an idler spur gear 91', engaging in turn the gear 912, both gears 91 and 912 being suitably mounted in the movable shelf B3. The gear 912 is mounted upon a shaft 92 carrying a worm 93. This worm engages a vertical rack 94 provided on a rod 94a depending from the head 61 and slowly lowers the shelf with the intermittent movement derived from the rolls. The vertical shaft 90 preferably makes one revolution while the intermitting gears are engaged, thus moving the shelf B3 a distance equal to the thickness of one slug.
The shelf is mounted on rollers 95, 95, in guides 9 6, 96, provided on the rod 94a. The shelf can be raised when desired to elevate the slugs in the lower magazine back to the upper magazine by first releasing the worm from the rack 94.
The release is made possible by mounting the worm shaft 92 upon a spring pressed pivoted frame 97, and this frame can be moved away from the rack by means of a pivoted pawl 98 operating upon a catch 99 on the frame 97, and a projecting ledge 100 serves as a handle to lift the movable bottom.
The rack does not extend entirely to the bottom 101 of the magazine, but a space is left in which the movable bottom can rest without further movement when the magazine is full. A similar space is left at the top of the magazine to prevent the movable shelf from being raised too high, and also, to permit the shelf to drop after it has raised the slugs to fill the upper magazine.
When it is desired to return used slugs to the upper magazine, the holding bars 64 are withdrawn, the worm 93 is released from the rack 94, and the bottom holding the slugs is raised to the top of the magazine.
In this manner the used slugs are returned to the same receptacle in which they were previously stored and arranged in the same iiXed to the spool D2. D3 indicates a disk having its periphery shaped `to form a spiral or worm. The disk D3 is fixed, preferably by a set screw D3, to the shaft 54, and meshes with the gear D5 in order to drive it. When it is desiredto unwind the ribbon from the spoelDz, the disk'D3 is moved longitudinally ofthe shaft 54 against'` a collar D7. The operations of the/various pai-'ts and intermitting movements of the machine succeed each other in the following manner:

In a printing machinefor successively printing opposite sides of blanks, a support over which the blanks travel, a vertically movable mem'ber arranged to engage a slug and cause it to print on one side of the blank, means for successively delivering slugs in a direction transverse to the movement of the blanks to and from said member, means for operating said member after a slug has been positioned in operative relation thereto, a device arranged to print subject-matterupon the opposite side of the blanks, and means for feeding the blanks first to the position for printing by the slugs and then to the position for printing by said device.
8. In a printing machine for successively printing opposite sides of blanks, a support on which the blanks travel and upon Which they rest in the printing position, intermittently acting means for feeding the blanks, an intermitting device for successively feeding a series of printing slugs to position for printing on the blanks, said intermitting mea-ns and device permitting a period of rest to the slugs and blanks, means for foreing each slug against a blank While the latter isat rest upon said support, to print on one side of each blank, and a main rotary printing drum adapted to print subject matter on the side of each of the blanks opposite to that printed upon by the slugs. In a combined printing and addressing` machine for printing the opposite sides of blanks, a support on Which the blanks travel, a printing device for printing subject matter on one side of each of the blanks as they travel on said support, a device for impressing printing slugs against the opposite sidesV of the blanks, said printing device and impressing device being arranged at different printing positions in the path of the blanks, an intermittently operating device for feeding the printing slugs into position to be acted upon by said impressing device, and an intermittently acting device for successively feeding the blanks to one printing position and then t0 the other printing position, the feeding devices for the blanks and slugs having corresponding periods of rest.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a platform having spaced openings over Which blanks move, a blank holding receptacle correlated with said4 plat- `form and spaced from the openings therein, means for successively feeding the blanks from said receptacle over said platform, said feeding means having a period of rest, a receptacle for receiving and holding a series of printing slugs, means for successively feeding` the slugs from said receptacle to one of said openings, said feeding mechanism having a rest period corresponding with the rest period of said blank feeding means, means for impressing the slugs against the blanks during their periods of rest, said impressing means operating through one of said openings, and a printing device adapted to operate through the other opening.

In a combined printing and addressing machine, a platform formed With printingopenings, a receptacle adapted to hold a series of printing slugs, a receptacle adapted to receive blanks and spaced from the printing openings, mechanism having alternate periods of movement and rest for feeding the blanks from said blank holding receptacle to register in succession with said printing openings, means for printing one side of the Iblanks from the printing slugs in one printing position at one opening, separate means operating in the other opening for printing the side of each blank opposite to that printed upon by the slugs, and mechanism having alte nate periods of movement and rest for feeding the slugs from said slug receptacle te position for printing from said slug printing means.

In a printing and addressing machine, the combination of a platform formed with tivo spaced printing openings, means for successively feeding blanks to be printed upon to positions above said openings, means for successively feeding slugs to register with one of said openings, at right angles to the direction of movement of the blanks, means for moving each slug through the 'adjacent opening in said platform to press them into engagement with Acorresponding sides of theblanks, and a device adapted to operate through the other open` ing to print on the other side of the blanks.
13. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a platform, a blank receiving and holding receptacle, a receptacle for receiving and holding printing slugs, mechanism for propelling the iblanks across said platform from said blank receptacle, mechanism for propelling the printing slugs across said platform from said slug receptacle, the blanks and slugs being propelled to a common position for printing, a platen arranged in operative relationship to the printing position for the blanks, a reciprocating device adapted to press a slug against said platen as a blank moves into printing position adjacent said platen, a separate device for printing on the blanks, and mechanism for operating said blank and slug propelling mechanisms and printing devices.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a platform having printing openings, a rotary printing device registering with one of said openings on one side of said platform, a platen for said rotary printing device, a reciprocating member .registering with the other opening, a platen for said reciprocating member, and means for feeding printing slugs to a position opposite the platen for said reciprocating member, and on the other side of said platform, whereby the blanks are printed on one side by the slugs and are then printed on the other side by said rotary printing device.
15. In a machine of the class described, the combination 0f a platform having two printing openings, a main shaft, a printing drum mounted 0n said shaft and registering with one of said openings, a platen for said drum, a reciprocatable member mounted in the other opening, a ca m shaft, a cam mounted on said cam shaft and arranged to reciprocate said member, a platen for said reciprocatable member, means for connecting said cam shaft with said main shaft, a receptacle for holding blanks, means operatively connected with said main shaft for intermittently feeding the blanks into operative relationship with said openings, a receptacle for holding printing slugs, and means operatively connected with said main shaft for interniittently feeding the printing slugs to the opening in which said reciprocatable memlber is mounted. y
16. In-a printing machine, the combination of a cylinder or drum, a pressure roll forsaid cylinder or drum, a reciprocatable plunger, a platen for said plunger, a device for operating said plunger, means, including an intermitting device, for operating said cylinder and plunger operating device, mechanism for successively feeding blanks to said plunger and cylinder, and mechanism for successively feeding printing slugs to and from said platen, said feeding mechanisms being connected with and operated by said intermitting device.
17. In a printing machine, the combination of a platform, rolls for feeding blanks forwardly over said platform, a device for successively feeding blanks to said rolls, a reciprocating plunger, a .platen for said plunger1 an upper magazine for containing a series of slugs, a lower magazine in line ver tically with said upper magazine, mechanism for transferring one at a time the slugs from said upper magazine to said plunger and from said plunger' to said lower magazine, means for reciprocating said plunger, said means permitting said .plunger to remain at rest while receiving and delivering the printing slugs, and meansfor intermittently operating said feed rolls, blank feeding device and slug transferring mechanism.
18. Ina printing machine, the combination of a platform having a printing opening, a plunger reciprocatably mounted Vin .said opening, a platen for said plunger, de-
vices for advancing blanks to said platen, an upper magazine for holding a series of slugs, a lower magazinein line vertically with said upper magazine, a shuttle for transferring the slugs one at a time from said upper magazine to said plunger at one level and for returning the slugs to said lower magazine at a lower` level, a shelf movably mounted in said lower magazine and adapted to support the slugs as they are delivered thereto, means for operating said plunger and said blank advancing devices, and means for moving the shelf.
19. In a printing machine, the combination of a platform formed with an opening over which a blank is adapted to be fed, a plunger reciprocatable in said opening, a support for holding unused and used slugs, guides from said support to said plunger through which the slugs areV fed thereto, separate guides fromV said plunger to said support through which the slugs are returned, devices for moving the slugs through said guides one at a timefrom said support to a position above said plungerto permit printing from the slugs and from said position back to said support, and means for moving the plunger and slug moving devices in coperative relationship.
20. In a printing machine,in/ combination, a Vplatform havingV an opening, a main source of power, a plunger operating in said opening, an upper magazine for aseries of printing slugs located above said platform, supports for said slugs at thelower end of said magazine upon which said slugs fall by gravity, a lower magazine in line vertically with said upper magazine, a guide block having guide openings for printing slugs arranged respectively one on the level of said slug: supports in said upper maga-Y zine and one at a lower level adapted to discharge slugs `int-osaid lower magazine, said plunger operatinginsaid guide and having two rest periods corresponding to said levels in said guide, a device for transferring said slugs one at a time to said plunger from said upper magazine, and for transferring said slugs one at a time from said plunger to said lower magazine, a cam for operating said plunger, and intermittent mechanism for operating said slug transferring device in unison with the movements of said plunger.

In a printing machine, the combination of a platform having an opening, a plunger reciprocatable in said opening, a platen for said plunger, a cam for operating said plunger, said cam having a lower rest period and an intermediate rest periodf in its throw, guides arranged in planes coinciding with the positions of said plunger at the rest periods of said cam and adapted to slidably support printing slugs, means for holding a series of printing slugs, and a shuttle for successively moving the slugs from said support through one of the guides to said plunger at one rest period thereof and from said plunger through the other of said guides to said support at the other rest period of said plunger.
22. In a printing machine, the combination of a platform having a. printing opening, a pair of magazines for a series o-f printing slugs, said magazines being correlated with each other to permit the transfer of the slugs from one magazine to the other, a plunger reciprocatable in said opening, a platen for said plunger, a shuttle adapted to transfer one slug at a time from one of said magazines and deposit it upon said plunger and to then transfer the slug from said plunger to the other magazine, removable means for retaining the slugs in the first mentioned magazine, and means for transferring the slugs from one of said magazines to the other upon the removal of said retaining means.
23. In a printing machine, the combination of a platform having an opening, upper and lower magazines for a series of printing slugs, the open ends of said magazines being arranged adjacent to each other to permit the transfer of the slugs from the lower to the upper magazine, a plunger mounted in said opening, a platen for said plunger, means for moving one slug at a time from said upper magazine to said plunger and for moving one slug at a time from said plunger to said lower magazine, and means for elevating the used slugs from said lower magazine into the upper magazine through the open ends of said magazines.
24:. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a platform formed with a printing opening, a support for `holding slugs in series, a shuttle arranged to transfer the slugs one at a time from saidsupport 'to a position opposite said printing opening and back to said support, devices for supporting the slugs at a position in said support to be engaged by said shuttle, and means for moving the slugs, which have been transferred yby said shuttle to and from the printing position, along said support into position for engagement by said shuttle.
25. In a printing machine, a platform having a printing opening, upper and lower magazines for a series of printing slugs adjacent to said platform, said magazines having vertically alined communicating openings, a reciprocating shuttle adapted to transfer one slug at a time from one magazine to the printing opening, and from the printing opening to the other magazine, means for temporarily retaining the slugs in the upper magazine before use in the machine, and means for elevating the used slugs from the lower magazine to the upper magazine through said communicating openings when said retaining means is withdrawn.
26. In a printing machine, a platform having a printing opening, a plunger and platen registering with said opening, a guide member for said plunger, said guide member having horizontal guides for slugs therein at different levels, a magazine for a series of printing slugs adapted to discharge slugs to one set of guides at the upper level, a lower magazine adapted to receive the used slugs at the lower level, and a reciprocating shuttle having fingers adapted to engage the slugs at both levels, the finger at the upper level provided with a spring pressed pawl adapted to engage the slug in one direction but to ride over the slug in the opposite direction.
27. In a printing machine, the combination of a platform formed with an opening, a supply magazine and a receiver, each adapted to hold a series of printing slugs, said magazine and receiver being arranged on the same side of said platform, a reciprocating plunger arranged to operate in said opening, a platen operatively supported relative to said open-ing to make impressions when the plunger is operated, a shuttle adapted to successively move slugs from said magazine into an operative position relative to said opening and then back again to said receiver, a .shelf movably mounted in said receiver, and means for moving said shelf downwardly the thickness of one slug incooperation with the movement of said shuttle.
28. In a printing machine, the combination of a platform formed with a printing opening, a magazine for holding slugs having an opening at its lower end, a receiver' for receiving slugs having an opening in its upper end adapted to register with the opening in the lower end of said magazine, means for successively moving slugs from said magazine, to said opening and then to said receiver, means operating upon said slugs at the printing opening to print ELO blanks, a shelf movably mounted in said receiver, means for lowering said shelf the thickness of one slug in cooperation with the movement of said slug delivering means, and means permitting detachment Vof said shelf from said operating means whereby said shelf can be moved endvvise in the resaid shuttle, and means for alternately locking said `crank to said shaft and to said frame.
30. In a printing machine, the vcombination With a frame, of a plunger, Ia pair of magazines for holding, a. series of printing slugs, guides for the slugs, a reciprocatable shuttle provided with means for engaging said slugs, said engaging means being adapted to move said slugs one :at a. time from' one of said magazines to said plunger and therefrom to the other magazine, during one reciprocation of said shuttle, means for operating` ksaid shuttle, 'and means for disconnecting from each other vcertain elements of said operating means When a slug is positioned in operative relationship With said plunger.

In a printing machine, the combination 'With a frame, of a support for a series of printing slugs mounted on said frame, a reciprocatable plunger, a shuttle for transferring the slugs one at a time from said support to said plunger and from said plunger back to said support, guides for said slugs, Va rack on said shuttle, 'a second rack, gears rotatably mounted on said frame and opera-ted by said second rack to operate the shuttle through the rack thereon, 'a shaft mounted in said frame, a crank loosely mounted on said shaft, and a device movable to alternately connect said crank to said shaft or to said frame.

In apparatus of the class described, the combination with 'a support, of a printing couple, a holder for a series of printing devices, lmeans including two voperating elements lfor successively feeding the printing devices into operative relationship with said printing couple, and a device Inova-bly carried by one of said operating elements of said feeding means and arranged to connect it either to the other operating element of said feeding means or said support.
33. In a printing machine, the combination of a printing couple, a support for a series of printing slugs, a reciprocatable device for transferring the slugs one at a time from said support to a position for printing by said printing couple and from the printing position back to said support after printing, a shaft and crank loose thereon for operating said reciprocatable device, a frame for supporting said shaft, and a lock movable into one position to connect the crank to said shaft and movable into another position toconn'e'ct the crank to said frame.
34. The combination of 'a support for a series of printing slugs. `a printing couple 'arranged to effect printing from each slug upon a blank, a guide 'over which the slugs move from said support to the printing position, a separate or return guide over which the slugs move from the printing position to vsaid support-one element Vof said printing couple operatingto move each slug after printing upon a blank into position for delivery to said separate or return guide, and means for moving each slug along said guides.

The combination of a support for a series y'of printing slugs, a printing couple arranged to effect printing from each slug upon a blank, 'a guide over Which the slugs move from said Asupport to the printing position, a4 separate or return guide over which the slugs move from the printing position to said support, said separate or return guide being arranged in a different plane from said first mentioned guide, 'one element of said printing couple operating to move each slug after printing upon a b'l'ankinto position for delivery to said separate 'or .return guide, and 'means' for moving each slug along said guides.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a printing couple, a support provided with means for holding a series of printing slugs in position to permit the lowermost one to be fed to `said printing couple, and a device arranged below said holding means for holding the slugs in said support after delivery to and from said printing couple, said holding device be ing movable upwardly longitudinally of the support to transfer the slugs to a position for feeding to said printing couple and said holding means being movable laterally to permit operation of said holding device. p

In v a printing machine, upper and lower magazines for printing slugs, said magazines being vertically alined with each other, and having communicating openings through which the slugs may be moved from the lower magazine to the upper magazine, spreading members in the lower part of said uppermagazine upon which said slugs rest when the magazine is in use in the machine, and a movable device for moving the slugs from the lower to the upper magazine.
40. In a printing machine, upper and lower alined magazines for holding printing slugs, the adjacent ends of said magazines being open, yielding members in the upperv magazine upon which said slugs rest, and a movable shelf in said lower magazine on which said slugs rest, said upper magazine adapted to receive slugs from said lower magazine when said movable shelf is raised therein.
41. In a printing machine, the combination of a main printing couple, a separateV printing couple adapted to permit the insertion of a printing slug therebetween, one
element of said separate printing couple comprising a reciprocating device, means for successively feeding blanks to one printing couple and then to the other printing couple, said means being intermittently controlled. whereby each blank remains adjacent to each printing couple a predetermined length of time, and means for operating said reciprocating device in correlation to t-he move.V ment of said blank feeding means.
42. In a printing machine, the combination of a main printing couple adapted to print on one side of a blank, a separate printing couple adapted to print on the other side of a blank and arranged to permit the insertion of a. printing slug therebetween, one element of said separate printing couple comprising a reciprocating device, means for successively feeding blanks to one printing couple and then to the other printing couple, said means being intermittently controlled, whereby each blank remains in operative relation to each printing whereby each blank remains in operative relation to each printing couple a predetermined length of time, means for positioning a printing slug between the elements of said separate printing couple in correlation with thefeeding of each blank thereto, and means for operating said reciprocating device in correlation to the movement of said blank feeding means.
44. In a printing machine, the combination of a main printing couple adapted to print on one Side of a blank, a separate printing couple adapted to print on the other side of a blank and arranged to permit the insertion of a printing slug therebetween, one element of said separate printing couple comprising a reciprocating device, means for successively feeding blanks to one printing couple and then to the other printing couple, said means being intermittently controlled, whereby each blank remains in operative relation to each printing couple a predetermined length of time. means for delivering a printing slug to a position between the elements of the separate printing couple in correlation with the feeding of each blank thereto, and means for operating said reciprocating device in correlation to the movement of said blank feeding means and said slug delivery means.
45. In a machine of the class described. the combination with printing devices adapted to 'receive a printing slug between them and means for operating one of said devices` of holding means for a series of superposed printing slugs arranged at one side of said printing devices, a support, on which the series of slugs is adapted to rest, said support being arranged in and intermediate the ends of said holding means in substantially the same horizontal plane as said printing devices, and means for moving a slug from said holding means above said support to a position between said printing devices and then back to said holding means below said support therein, said support being removable whereby one or more of said slugs below said support can be moved endwise of said holding means to and above said support.
46. In a machine of the class described,
the combination with printing devices adapted to receive a printing slug between them and means for opera-ting one of said devices, of holding means for a series of superposed printing slugs arranged atone side of said printing devices, a removable support on which the series of slugs is adapted to rest, said support being arranged in and intermediate the ends of said holding means 1n substantially the same horizontal plane as said printing devices, and means for moving a slug from said holding mean-s above said support Ato a position between said printing devices and then back to said holding means below said support therein, said slugs below said support being movable vertically longitudinally of said holding means'upon the removal of said support to position them above the latter and that portion o said holding means extending above the printing devices being removable.
47. In a machine of the class described, the combination with printing devices adapted to receive a printing slug between them and means for operating one yof said devi-ces, of holding means for `a series of superposed printing slugs arranged at one side of said printing devices, a removable support on which the series of slugs is adapted to rest, said support being arrangedl in and intermediate the fends of said holding means in substantially the same horizontal plane as said printing devices, means for moving a slug from said holding means above said support to a position' between said printing devices land then back to said holding means below said support therein, and a shelf movably mounted in the holding means below said support for receiving the slug returned to said holding means and arranged to move the slugs below said support en'dwise of said holding means upon the removal of said support to position the slugs above the latter. y

In a machine of the class described, the combination with printing devices adapted to receive a printing slug between `them -and means for operating one of said devices, of holding means for a series of superposed printing slugs `arranged at one side of said printing devices,- Ya support, on which the series of slugs vis adapted to rest, said support being arranged in and intermediate the ends of said holdin-g means in substantially the same horizontal plane as'said printing devices,-means for moving a slug from said holding means above said support to 1a position between lsaid printing devices and then back to said holding means below said `support therein, and a member movably 'mounted in said holdin-g means and normally arranged lbelow said support for receiving the slug returned to the holding means, said member being movable endwise of said holding means to position 4the slugs above said support. In a machine of the class described, the combination with printing devices adapted to receive a printing slug between them and means for operating one of said devices, of holdingmean's for a series `of superposed printing slugs arranged at one side of said printing devices, a support, on which the series of slugs is adapted to rest, said support being `arranged in-.and intermediate the ends of `said holding means in `su'bstantially the same horizontal plane as said printing devices, means for moving a slug from said holding means above said support to a position between said printing devices and then back to said holding means below said support therein, a shelf mounted in the holdin-g means below said support for receiving `the slug returned to the holding means, and means for moving said shelf Vdownwardly in accordance with the delivery of the sl-ugs thereto, said shelf being Vdetad'iabl-e from Vits moving means. y
