This invention relates to printing'machines address forms selected for printing according to a predetermined classification to produce individually addressed letters having the same body, and it particularly relates to an automaticallyoperated signature device and means for feeding a printed sheet to the signature device to receive the signature impression and for delivering the sheet to a suitable stacker.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a printing machine of the class de- 1 scribed with means for printing a signature in another operation sothat the completed letter will have the appearance of being'individually typewritten and individually signed.
Another object is to provide novel-and improved means forming a part of and cooperating with a printing machine of the class described for printing a signature on every sheet that receives a body and address impression.
Another object is to provide novel means for feeding the sheet, after the body and-the address have been printed, to the signature device and then after the signature is printed delivering the sheet from the machine to a.
suitable stacking device.
Another object is to provide a signature printing mechanism which is coordinate with j a printing machin of the class described to operate sequentially to the rinting operation wherever the body and a dress are printed and which will not operate when a sheet or an address form are not fed to printing position. Another object is to provide. an automatic stacker whereby the sheets which have been printed will be neatly stacked upon a suitable receiver designed for this purpose. The printing machine is controlled by the printing devices bearing address forms from which printing impressions are made and which are fed through the machine one at a timetoprintingposition. Selectormechanism arranged in the machine selects certain print ing devices to be printed or to be skipped. Means are provided 'to prevent a sheet from being carried to printing position when a printing device is to be skipped and other mechanism controlled by a safety finger cooperates with the selector mechanism so that in the event a sheet is not fed or is improperly fed a printing device selected to be print- 4 the sheet during the return movement of the carriage. -An impression control bolt 3 slidably mounted in the main frame is controlled by the selector and safety mechanism so that when a printing device has been properly selected and a sheet is properly fed the pin 3 will project outwardly as shown in Fig. 1. A roller 3 fixed to the platen roll rocker 4 will engage the projecting pin 3 causing.

Theimpression platen is normally raised sufficiently above the bed of the machine to prevent the platen roller from contactin with the inked ribbon through which the impressions. are made. This mechanism is described in the aforesaid application and forms no part of the present invention. The carriage is reciprocated back and. forth across the frame by) a rocker arm (not shown) which is moved ack andforth by suitable mechanism and to'which the link 5, Fig. 3 is pivoted, as shown and described in the aforesaid application. The link 5 is also pivoted to a segment gear 6 which meshes with a segmental spur gear 7 fixed to a horizontal shaft 8 mounted in suitable hearings in the signature frame 2' which is bolted to the main frame. The segmental spur gear 7' is oscillated through an arc of 180 and oscillates the shaft 8. The end of the shaft 8 opposite the end to which the gear 7 is fixed, Fig. 4, carries a cam wheel 9.- A link 10 is pivoted at its lower end to the cam 9. A rack 11 meshes with a gear 12 fixed to the signature drive shaft 13. The upper end of the link 10 is pivotally connected to the rack 11 at 14 so that the oscillatory motion of the horizontal shaft 8 is transmitted to the shaft 13 to oscillate this shaft 13 a complete revolution.-
The signature drive shaft 13 has fixed thereon a plurality of paper feed rolls 15 and a signature roll 16, Fig. 1. This signature roll, more clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7, has flanges 17 at the sides thereof on which ride the ends of the ink distributing rolls 18, Fig. 3, revolubly mounted in an ink receptacle 19 which is adjustably and removably mounted in the main frame. A su ply roll 20 contacts with the distributing ro ls 18 to supply the proper amount of ink thereto. An inking arm 21 having an absorbent pad 22 on the end thereof extends into the well 23 of the receptacle 19 and by pressing the end 24 of the inking arm 21 the pad 22 will engage the roll 20 and apply ink thereto. In this manner the proper amount of ink is furnished to the distributing rolls 18 and then properly applied to the signature plate 100 which is detachably connected to the signature roll 16. The signature plate is made of sheet spring steel u on which the signature form 101 made of rub er or other suitable material is mounted. This plate is provided with slots 102,-
Fig. 11, and a cloth backing 103 is cemented to the plate and to the signature form through the slots. H
Triangular openings 104 in the ends of the plate are adapted to be enga ed with a pin 105 in the signature roll an a pin 105 is secured in the end of a spring 106 and projects through an opening 107 in the signature roll, Fig. 7. The spring 106 is arranged wholly within the signature roll and it is secured at one end to the roll by a pin 105. The spring is located opposite the signature sothe tension of the spring will always be in a direction to cause the pin 105' to pull on the signature plate and hold it snugly against the roll. I provide one opening 104 with an extension 104 to receive the pin 105 so that the opposite opening 104 may readily be engaged with the pin 105T. This insures that the signature will always be arranged in its proper reading position on the signature roll because the signature plate is not long enough to properly engage pin 105' if the last mentioned opening is engaged with pin 105. To apply the signature plate to the roll the end of the plate having the extended opening 104, 104 is en aged with pin 105 and then the other end 0 the plateis pressed down upon the pin 105 thereby depressing spring 106 until the head of the pin snaps into engagement with the opening 104. To remove the signature plate from the roll the operator may insert a finger through the opening 107 to depress spring 106 and cause the free end of the spring to move in an are,
which will carry the pin laterally to the right, Fig. 7, as well as inwardly towards the shaft 13, and in this way the pin is readily disengaged from the signature plate which will spring loose from the signature roll, after which the signature plate can be readily disengaged from the pin 105. The signature plate can be applied and removed from the si nature roll quickly and without special Sklll so that changes ma be made wlthout materially interrupting t e operation of the machine.
The signature roll 16, Fig. 6, is provided with a bearing 108 which receives the signature drive shaft 13 and this bearing is journaled in the signature roll frame 109 which is supported in the main frame on the shaft 110 and the shaft 111, Fig. 3, whereby the signature roll frame may be adjusted transversely of the'machine to position the sig- 1 adjusted position lengthwise and rotatively of the shaft. The end of the bearing 108 is split lengthwise at 114, Fig. 10, and peripherally at 115 half way around so that the bearing can be squeezed together and clamped upon the shaft 13. The bearing is also provided with an eccentric annular groove 116,
Figs. 8, 10,- about the split portion just described, the low spot of this eccentric groove being located at the split 114. The set screw 113 is adjusted to make locking engagement with the bearing 108 at or about a quarter turn of the clamping nut and when so adjusted the bearing will be clamped to oscillate with signature drive shaft 13 but against movement relatively thereto lengthwise thereof or rotatively thereon. The nut is locked by turning it clockwise and a key 117, Fig. 8, is arranged in the groove 116 and engaged with the split 114 to act as a stop and to limit counter-clockwise movement of the nut. The key compels the operator to turn the nut clockwise for locking and insures uniform operation of the nut for locking and unlocking.
Provision is made for easily removing and replacing the ink receptacle, for replenishing the ink, for changing the ink, and for cleaning the rolls. The ink receptacle 19 is pro- 'vided in its bottom with a groove 19', Fig. 3,
to engage the support 118 which is in the form of a U-shaped 'rod with outturned ends engaging the signature frame, Fig. 1. A
spring 119 is attached at-one end to a handle 120 on the support 118 and at its other end to the signature frame 2 to hold the support in up position. The ink receptacle 19 has dowel holes 19 to receive dowel pins 109 on the signature roll frame, Fig. 6. When the ink receptacle is in position in the machine it is supported on the rod 118 and is engaged with the dowel pins 109 and the spring 119 holds the supporting rod in engagement with the receptacle and the receptacle in engagement with the dowel pins and the distributing rolls 18 in engagement with the flanges 17 of the signature roll 16. The ink receptacle is adjustable to any position on the supporting rod 118 transversely of the machine and it is registered with the signature roll by the engagement of the dowel pins and holes. When the signature frame is adjusted transversely of the machine the ink receptacle is adjusted transversely with it. To remove the ink receptacle from the machine the handle 120 is depressed until the receptacle is freed from the dowel pins-109. whereupon the receptacle can be withdrawn from the machine.
To control. the amount of ink applied by the pad 22 to the supply rolls 20, an adjusting screw 121, Fig. 6, having a pointed end 121 is arranged in the ink receptacle in the path of movement of the inking arm 21. The screw limits the upward movement of the inking arm and by adjusting the screw more or less of the polnt can be made to engage the arm and vary the upward throw of the inking arm.
A rocker 26, Fig. 12, havinga long arm 27 and a short arm 28 is loosely mounted on the shaft 8, Fig. 4. The long arm carries a transverse bar 29 on which a block 29 is adjustably mounted, and a delivery arm 30 is piv-. oted to .this block. The short arm 28 has pivoted thereto a pawl 31 having a hook 32 which is adapted to engage an arm 33 fixed to a transverse rod 34 pivotally mounted in the signature frame 2. A pawl 35 is pivoted on the carriage, Figs. 2 and 5, and it has a hooked end36 for engaging a transversebar 37 pivoted to the carriage frame. A spring 38 is attached to the pawland to pin 37 on the bar 37 and pulls the ment with the bar. The olt 3 which projects outwardly when paper and printing devices are properly fed to the machine has a pin 39, projecting downwardly therefrom against which the pawl 35 will strike on the forward movement of the carriage to the right, Figs. 1, 2, and cause the hook 36 to release the transverse bar 37 and allow the bar to turn in its bearings in the carriage frante to the position shown in Fig. 5 about the same time the roller 3 engages the bolt 3 and causes the platen shifting arm 4 to lower the platen 4" into impression position. A pawl 41 having a hook 42 and a safety tail 43, Figs.
2, 5, is adjustably mounted on the transverse bar 37 and is adapted to engage the cam 44 which is pivotally mounted on the delivery arm 30. A felt bumper 46 on the delivery arm is arranged to contact with a stop 47,
Fig. 4, adjustably mounted on a toothed rack 48 which is secured on a bracket 48 on the main frame. The bracket 48! is adjustably mounted on the main frame so\ that it can be registered with the delivery arm inany position to which the latter may be set for gripping the sheet. The book 42 on the. pawl 41 engages with the cam 44 at the end ofi-the forward movement of the carriage and. carries the delivery arm 30 with it when the carriage starts on its rearward or return movement in a direction opposite to the arrow, Fig. 1,
and moves therewith the rocker 26. As the delivery arm 30 thus moves across the frame it will ride on its rollers 49 engaging the guide plates 50 fixed to the bracket 48, Figs.
2, 4. When the bumper 46 strikes the stop 47 the continued pull on the cam 44 will turn the cam and release the hook 42 of the pawl. 41.
The stop 47-may be set according to the margin desired on the printed sheet and the parts are so timed that when the bumper 46 strikes the stop and just before the cam 44 is turned the sheet will be positioned be nae l position by engagement with the stop tween the plate 51 and the jaws 52, Fig. 2, and when the pawl 41 turns the cam 44 the plate 51 will be depressed to clamp the sheet against the delivery arm jaws 52.
A spring 53, Figs. 2 and 4, is connected at one end to the rocker 26 and at its other end to the pawl 54. The pawl is pivoted to the arm 55 which is pivoted in the rocker 26 and a roller 56 on this arm is held in engagement with the cam 9 by the spring 53. A bracket 57 is fixed on the frame in position to be engaged by the pawl 54 to prevent rebound in the arm 27 when its stop 27 strikes the stop 27 on the signature frame. After the sheet has been clamped the delivery arm remains stationary until at or about the t1me the carriage returns to initial position, to-
the left, Fig. 1. During the return stroke of the carriage, which is the rinting stroke, the cam 9 is turning in a cloc wise direction. When the carriage has reached its initial position the slope 9 of the cam engages the roller 56, and a turning movement counterclockwise is set up in the rocker 26. The rocker pulls the delivery arm back to deliver the sheet to the signature device, whereupon the sheet will be released from the jaws 52 and the plate 51 by the pivoted lever 58, Figs. 1, 4, 5, striking the pin 59 which projects from one of the two delivery roll arms 60. A rod 61 is connected to the cam 44 and to the lever 58, Fig. 5, so that when the lever 58 strikes the pin 59 the cam 45 will be turned to normal position, Fig. 5, and allow the sheet to be released from the delivery arm and clamped by the delivery rolls. A spring 62 tends to hold the lever-58 in the unclamped position shown in Fig. 5 and gives a snap opening action to the plate 51 after the lever has been moved past its axial center line by the pin 59. The delivery arm also has a socket 59', Figs. 4, 5, which is engaged by the pin 59 and prevents upward movementof the delivery arm.
The delivery roll arms 60, Figs. 2, 4, are adjustably fixed to the horizontal shaft 64 which is pivotally mounted in the signature frame 2. Each arm has an equalizer 66 pivoted thereto carrying rollers 67 and 67 which press the sheet against a roll 15 so that the sheet will be fed through signature printing position by the rolls 15. The delivery arm carries the sheet into position between the delivery feed rolls l5 and the pressure rolls 67, the sheet being registered in proper ngers 15 which are mounted on the rolls 15, Fig. 2. A yoke 68 is fixed on the shaft 34 which also carries the fixed pawl 70, Fig. 3. An arm 71 rigid with the shaft 64 has a latch pin 72 projecting therefrom which is adapted to be received in the 'notch 73 of the pawl 70.
. When the delivery arm carries a. sheet to the signature device, the pawl 32, Fig. 4, attached to the rocker 26 engages the arm 33 and rocks the shaft 34, thereby releasing the pawl from the latch pin 72. A spring 74 then pulls the' arm 71 causing slight oscillation of the shaft 64 and moving the rolls 67 towards the rolls" 15. r A pin 75 projecting inwardly from the gear 7 strikes the cam 76 on the arm 71 after-"the sheet has been fed through the signature device and allows the latch pin 72 to again fall in the notch 73 and cause the delivery roll arms 60 to again move the rolls 67 away} from the rolls 15. A light spring 77 attached at one end to the equalizer 66 and anchored at the other end in a delivery roll arm 60 holds the equalizer with the roll 67 always bearing against the delivery feed roll 15 and the roll 67 free from the delivery roll until the feeding o eration begins.
A spring presse arm 78, Fig. 3, carrying the signature platen roll 80 is pivoted at 7 8 to the member 79 which is rigidly but adjustablymounted on the shaft 64. An ad- ]usting screw 81 limits the movement of the arm 7 8,relative to the member 79 towards the signature roll 15. The relatively heavy spring 74 swings the arm 71, shaft 68, arm 78 and signature platen roll towards the signature roll, and the yielding mountin of the signature platen roll provides an in ependent adjustment of the roll to accommodate unevenness in the signature form. After the sheet is fed through signature printing position it isstripped from the delivery feed rolls 15 by strippers 15" supported on shaft 15" in the signature frame 2.
The sheet passes from the strippers to the receivin plate 82 which is supported upon the brac ets 83 pivotally mounted on the rod 84 in the signature frame 2, Figs. 1, 2. A brace 85 is pivotally engaged at one end with a stacker bracket and may be engaged at its other end to the main frame to support the stacker in proper position to receive the sheet. Packer plates 86 are provided with angle brackets 87 to receive clamping screws 88 which engage slots 89 in the slide bars 90 whereby the packer plates may be adjusted upon the slide bars to accommodate sheets of different sizes. An actuating bar 91 is supported in one or more straps 92 on the underside of the plate 82 and it is provided with oppositely disposed cam recesses 93/ Rollers 94 on the slide bars 90 are arranged to work in the cam recesses 93. A sprin 95 connected at its ends to the two slide ars holds the rollers in contact with the cam surfaces. An arm 96 on the shaft 8 is arranged to engage the rear upper end of the actuating bar 91 to push the bar forward. A spring 97 having one end attached to the actuating bar and the other end attached to the plate 82 returns the actuating bar. In Figs. 1, 2, the arm 96 is holding the actuating bar in for ward position; when the arm is retracted the sprin 97 will retract the actuating bar and sprea the slide bars and packer plates to receive a sheet, and when the arm again pushesthe actuating bar forward the Spring cause the platen s 95 pulls the slidebars and the packer plates together to register thesheet on the stack. A back stop 98 at the lower end of the plate 82 retains the stack upon the plate.
' The operation is as follows: Assuming that .a' printing device has been selected to be printed and. a sheet has been fed to the machine, the bolt 3 will project outwardly, as shown" in Fig. 1, and the carriage will grip a sheet and carry it. forward across the machine to the right in Fig. '1, into position to receive a printing impression upon the return movement of the carriage, to the left in Fig. 1. When the carriagehas traveled the entire distance on its forward movement the roller 3 and the pawl 35. will strike-against the bolt 3 and its projectin pin 39, respectively, and ifting arm to lower the platen roller 4' into impression position and cause the pawl to become disengaged from the transverse bar 37 thereby allowing the hook 42 of the pawl41 to drop and engage the cam 45. The carriage has then reached the limit of its forward travel and begins its return printing stroke, carrying with it the delivery arm 30. When the bumper 46 on the delivery arm strikes the stop 47 the awl 41 will cause the cam 44 to turn and re ease the pawl41. When the cam 44 is turned it depresses the plate 51 of the delivery arm and grips the marginal edge of a sheet between the plate and the jaws 52. This action is 61 to swing th tripper simultaneous with the release of the pawl 41 from the cam and engagementof the pawl 35 with the bar 37 to hold the pawl 41 in up position. The carriage completes its return printing stroke and about this time the spring 53 returns the rocker 26 with a quick movement to its initial position, its arm 27 pulling the delivery arm 30 to its initial position, Fig. 5. These parts remain in initial position while the carriage is completing its next forward stroke whereupon the latch pawl 41 is engaged with the cam '44 to carry the delivery arm with it on itsreturn stroke, as previously described. The sheet is printed before the completion of the return stroke of the carriage and immediately after the impression operation is started the deliver arm bumper 46 will strike the stop 47 whic limits the first movement of the delivery arm. As the carriage continues its return stroke the pawl 41will swing the cam 44 to depress the plate 51 and clamp the sheet against the jaws 52, at the same time releasing the cam from the pawl and causing the rod lever 58 to set position, Figs. 2, 4. As the delivery arm advances the sheet for signature printing the tripper lever 58 engages the pin 59 and is swung back to initlal position, the rod 61 swinging the cam 44to its initial posltion, Fig. 5, and releasing the sheet, whereupon further movement of the sheet through signature impression position is efi'ected by the feeding rolls 15 and the pressure rolls 67 and 67. As the rocker arm 27 returns to initial position, Fig. 5, the hook-32 of the pawl 31 will engage the arm 33 fixed to the shaft 34, Fig. 4, giving this shaft a slight oscillatory movement and causing the pawl 70, Fig. 3, to move away from the pin 72 in the arm 71 thereby enabling spring 74 to give the shaft 64 a slight turn and causing the delivery roll arms 60 to move toward the rolls 15 and making the rolls 67 and 67 press the sheet against the rolls 15. At the completion of the return stroke of the carriage thepin 75 on the gear 7, Fig. strikes the cam 7 6 on the arm 71 causing the' pin 72 on the arm 71 to be again latched with the pawl 70, thereby lifting the rolls 67, 67' and the roll and holding them in raised position for the next sheet.
When the carriage returns to initial position at the left of Fig. 1, the roll 3 will strike the finger 52 on the frame and this will cause the platen roll rocker 4 to raise the platen roll out of impression position so that it may travel in this position over the form on the next forward stroke of the carriage.
While the machine is in operation the sig nature roll and the rolls 15 are continually oscillating, whether or not a sheet is being fed, and when a sheet is advanced by the delivery arm for signature printing it will be fed by the rolls 15, 67 and 67 through signature impression position after which it is discharged. into the stacker.
The invention is primarily designed for a machine for printing personally addressed and signed form letters in simulation of typewritten and individually signed letters and the signature device is so constructed and mounted in the machine that an operator without especial skill may readily and easily change the signature form and also change or replenish the ink as often as desired; and, of course, adjustments may be easily and quickly made whereby to position the signature device in proper relation to a particular sheet to be printed in any positionrelative to the top and bottom and the side edges of a sheet, any form may be substituted for the signature form and the machine may be employed for printing other matter than a simulated typewritten letter. v
I have shown the invention on a machine like that disclosed in the copending application heretofore referred to, but it is not limited to this machine and may be embodied in.
parts shown and described but reserve the 1 right to change the same within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a printing machine whlch has a movable carriage, means for positioning a sheet has been printe in printing position, and means to print the sheet, the combination of a delivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage to travel therewith, means for causing the delivery arm to grip the sheet, means for releasing the delivery arm from the carriage and returning it to initial osition, and means for releasing the sheet rom the delivery arm.
2. In a printing machine which has a movable carriage, means for positioning a sheet in printing position, and means to print the sheet, the combination of a delivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage to travel therewith during the im ression operation, means for causing'the de ivery arm to grip the sheet, means for releasing the delivery arm from the carriage and returning it to the initial position, and means for releasing the sheet rom the delivery arm.
3. In a printing machine which has a reciprocable carriage means for positionin a sheet in printing position during the orward movement of the carriage, and means to print the sheet upon the return movement of the carriage, the combination of a delivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage to travel therewith on its return movement, means for causing the deliver arm to grip the sheet, means for releasing the delivery arm from the carriage after the impression operation and returning it to initial position, and means for releasing the sheet from the delivery arm.

In a printing machine having a reciprocable carriage for carrying a sheet to printing position during the forward movement of the carriage, and means to print the sheet upon the return movement of the carriage, the com bination of a delivery arm,means forengaging the delivery arm with the carriage to travel therewith on its return movement, means for causing the delivery arm to grip the forward edge of the sheet after it has been printed, means for releasing the delivery arm for the carria after the impression operation and returning it to initial position, and means for releasing the sheet from the delivery arm.

In a printing machine, the combination of a reciprocable sheet carrying carriage, means to print the sheet, a signature device, a delivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage to travel therewith on its return movement, means for causing the delivery arm to grip the sheet after it has been printed, means for releasing the delivery arm and returning it to initial position, means for releasin the sheet from the delivery' arm, feed r0 s for advancin the sheet to signature rinting position, an pressure rolls for hol ing the sheet in operative contact with the feed rolls.
8. In a printing machine, the combination of a reciprocable sheet carrying carriage, means to print the sheet, a signature device, a delivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage to travel therewith on its return movement, means for causing the delivery arm to grip the sheet after it has been printed, means for releasing the delivery arm and returning it to initial position, means for releasing the sheet from t e delivery arm, feed rolls for advancing the sheet to signature printing position, pressure rolls means for moving the pressure rolls to hold the, sheet in operative contact with the feed rolls, and means for releasing the feed rolls to free the sheet.
9. In a printing machine, the combination of a reciprocable sheet carrying carriage, means to print the sheet, a si ature device, a delivery arm, means fo engaging the delivery arm with the carriage at the end of the forward movement of the carria so that the delivery arm will travel with t e carria on its return the delivery ed, means or releasing the delivery arm from the carriage and returning it to initial osition, and means for releasing the sheet mm the delivery arm.

In a printing machine, the combination of a reciprocable sheet carrying. carriage, means to print the sheet, a signature device, a delivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the-carriage at the end of the forward movement of the carriage so that the delivery arm will travel with the carriage on its return movement, means for causing the delivery arm to grip been printed, means for releasing the delivery arm from-the carriage after the sheet'has been printed, means for returning the delivery arm to initial position carrying the sheet with it,- means for releasing the sheet from the delivery arm, means comprising feed rolls and pressure rolls for advancing the sheet through signature printing position, stop fingers on the feed rolls for registering the sheet between the feed and pressure rolls, means for releasing the pressure rolls, anda stripper for freeing the sheetfrom rolls after the signature has been printed.
17. In a printing machine, the combination of a reciprocable sheet carrying carriage, means to print the sheet, a signature device, a delivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage at the end of the forward movement of'the carriage so that the deliveryarm will travel with the carriage means for causing the delivery arm to grip the sheet after it has been printed, means or releasing the delivery arm from the carriage after the sheet has been printed, means for returning the de livery arm to initial position carrying the from the delivery arm,

19. A printing machine comprising a reciprocating carriage, a signature device, a delivery arm, means actuated by the carriage to operate the delivery arm, and means controlled bythe delivery arm to place a. sheet in printing position relative to the signature device.

A printing machine comprising a reciprocating carriage, a signature device, means for oscillating the signature device, a delivery arm, means 0 erated by the carriage to reciprocate the elivery arm, means controlled by the delivery arm to place a sheet in feeding relation to the signature device, means for releasing the sheet from the delivery arm, and means for feeding the sheet to the signature device.

A printing. machine of the class described comprising a reciprocating carriage for carrying a sheet to printing position, a signature device, a delivery arm for advancing the sheet from printing position to signature printin position, and means for operating the de ivery arm only when a sheet is in printing position.
22. A printing machine of the class described adapted to print from a single body form 'and successively changing address forms and comprising a reciprocating carrage for carrying a sheet to printing position, a signature device, a delivery arm for advancing the sheet from printing position position, means for rward movement of the carriage so ing position to engage the delivery arm with the carria e and cause it to travel with the carriage through the impression operation, and means for causing t e delivery arm to advance the sheet after printing to signature printing position.

In a printing machine, the combination of a reciproca le carriage for positioning a sheet in printing position, means to print the sheet a delivery arm,r,means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage so that the delivery arm willtravel with the carriage through printing position, jaws on the delivery arm, means for engaging the jaws with the sheet, means for releasing the delivery arm from the carriage, means for returning the delivery arm to initial position carying the sheet with it, and means for releasing the sheet from the jaws.
25. In a printing machine, the combination,
sheet, a elivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage so that the delivery arm will travel with the carriage through printin position, a stop adapted to be engaged by the delivery arm to limit the movement of the delivery arm with the carriage, jaws on the delivery arm, means for engaging the 'aws with the sheet, means for releasing the delivery arm from the carria e, means for returnin thedelivery arm to 1nitial positioncarrying the sheet with it, and means for releasing the sheet from the jaws. 26. In a printing machine, the combination of a reciprocable carriage for positionin a sheet in printing position, means to print the sheet, a delivery arm, means for engaging the delivery arm with the carriage comprising a cam on the delive arm and a pawl on the carriage so that t e delivery arm will .travel with the carria through printing position, a stop adapted to be engaged by the delivery .arm with the carriage and cause the release of the pawl from the cam, jaws on the delivery arm, means for engaging the jaws with the sheet, means for returning the delivery arm to initial position carrying the sheet with it, and means for releasing the sheet from the jaws. 27. n a printing machine, the combination of a reclprocable carriage for positioning a sheet in printing position, means to print the sheet, a delivery arm, means for 'en aging the delivery arm with the carriage an comprising a cam on the delivery arm and a pawl on the carriage so that the delivery arm will travel with the carriage through printing position, a stop adapted to be engaged by the delivery arm to limit the movement of the delivery arm with the carriage and cause the cam to turn and release the pawl and engage the delivery arm with the sheet, means for returning the delivery arm to initial position carrying the sheet with it, and means for returning the cam to initial position for engagement with the pawl and releasing the sheet.
