PRINTING MACHINE Original Filed Oct. 26, 1927 Patented Feb. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WALTER T. GOLLWITZER, CHIGAG O, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR'TOADDRESSOGRAPH COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE PRINTING MACHINE Original application me October 26, 1927, Serial No.
1929. Serial This ap lication is a division of my application erial No. 228,729, filed October 26, 1927.
This invention has for its primary object to provide a novel ink receptacle and means for detachably securing the receptacle in a printing machine so that it can be easily and quickly removed whenever required and for any purpose. The invention is particularly adapted for printing machines which are used as a part of an office equipment for printing addresses, letters and the like, and in my original application and in the accompanying drawing I have shown the invention embodied in a machine having a revoluble signature printing form to which ink is automatically supplied from the receptacle. Referring to the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation showing the invention and associated parts of a machine in which it may be embodied.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged'sectional view through the signature roll and ink receptacle.
In the drawing 3 designates generally a main frame and 4 a signature frame which is bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the main frame. A printing device in the form of a signature roll 5 is revolubly mounted on shaft 6 and is fully disclosed and claimed in my other divisional application Serial No. 359,197, filed April 30, 1929. The printing device or signature roll carries a detachable printing form 7 between peripheral flanges 8, 8 which ride on a pair of spaced ink'distributing rolls 9 so that the printingform will contact with said rolls to receive ,inkthere from. The rolls 9 have shafts 10 which on gage alined slots 11 in the upper end of the ink receptacle 12 and when the receptacle is. removed from the machine these rolls can be lifted out of the slots for repair 'or replacement. The rolls 9 have tapered ends which cooperate with the flanges 8 to maintain the 4 rolls in alignment with the printing form 7. An ink supply roll 13 is mounted in the walls of the ink receptacle between and in contact with the distributing rolls to supply ink thereto. The supply roll is spaced from the signature roll so that it will not contact there- 228,729. Divided and this application filed May 2. No. 359,775.
with and the arrangement is such that the signature roll will revolve both of the distributing rolls in the same direction and they will revolve the supply roll in the same direc tion as the signature roll whereby a supply of ink is evenly and smoothly transferred from the supply roll to the distributing rolls and from the distributing rolls to the signature form. The ink receptacle 12 is provided in its bottom with a groove 14 to engage a support which is in the form of a U-shaped rod 15 having out-turned ends 16 engaging the signature frame. A spring 17 is attached at one end to a handle 18 on the support 15 and at itsother end to the signature frame to hold the support in up position. The ink receptacle has openings 19 to receive pins 20 on the signature roll frame for regis tering and holding the ink rece tacle in proper position in the machine. rovision 70, is made in a machine of this kind for the adjustment of the signature roll transversely of the'machine to print the signature at the proper position on the letter sheet and the ink receptacle being supported and registered and held on the signature frame will be adjusted with the signature roll to properly register therewith. To insert the receptacle in the machine the handle 18 is operated to swing the support downward on its pivots 16, whereupon the receptacle may be placed in position on the support with the groove 14 engaging the support as shown in Fig. 1. Then the handle is released and the support is swung to up position by the spring 17 engaging the openings 19 with the pins 20 to register the ink receptacle with the signal-v ture roll and engaging the distributing rolls 9, 9 with the flanges 8, 8 of the signature roll so that they will distribute ink onto the face of the type form held between the flanges. The ink receptacle may be removed from the machine by depressing the support and withdrawing the receptacle from the support. The receptacle may be provided with a handle 21 to facilitate inserting the receptacle in the machine and removing it therefrom. A lever 22 is pivoted at 23 on the outside of the receptacle 12 and it projects into the receptacle belowthe ink rolls and carries an ab- 100 sorbent pad 24 which is adapted to absorb ink in the well at the bottom of the receptacle and to engage and apply ink to the supply roll 13. The lever has an extension 25 which is arranged to be engaged by automatic devices comprising the yoke 26 for intermittently swinging the lever to ink the supply roll as described in my original application.
The invention comprises a simple and convenient means for inking the printing form which, in the particular embodiment illustrated and described, is a signature form. Any other printing form may be substituted for the printing form. The supply roll is intermittently supplied with ink from the well of the receptacle through the medium of the movable absorbent pad 24; and the supply roll evenly applies the ink to the distributing rolls which in turn evenly apply 20" the ink to the printing form. The receptacle including the supply and distributing rolls and the applying pad with its lever, constitutes a unit which is bodily inserted in the machine and removed therefrom. Provision is made for easily registering the receptacle with the printing form so that the rolls will properly apply the ink to the form. The invention is shown in part of a printing machine which is fully dis- 30' closed in my original application but it is adapted to other machines and changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts may be made for this or other purposes within the scope of the following claims.
