ROBERT L. BROWN AND JAMES A. CARTER, 0F PEARSALL, TEXAS.
BURNER-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed October 5, 1917. Serial No. 194,918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT L. BROWN and JAMES A. CARTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Pearsall, in the county of F rio and State of Texas, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Burner-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to liquid. fuel burners and it is the dominant object of the invention to provide a burner for destroying the thorns or spikes of cactus or prlckly pear capable of utilizing heavy hydro carbon 011s, such as kerosene for fuel.
It is an equally important object of the invention to provide a burner having a p1urality of discharge openings formed therein, whereby the fuel reduced to a highly combustible state will be projected therefrom in different angles and as a consequence, when ignited, will direct a heating flame onto the retort chamber of the burner construction causing the superheating of the heavy fuel flowing therethrough.
The improvements in the details and. arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved burner; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough showing the same applied to a liquid fuel burner and positioned so as to direct a heating flame onto the retort chamber thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing and in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts in the several views, 1 represents the burner cap, the rear portion of which is internally screw threaded and receives a screw plug 2 therein, whereby the same may be readily cleaned as it becomes necessary and also to provide means whereby the passage of fuel to the discharge openings hereinafter described, may be controlled. A neck 3 extends from the cap 1 and has communication with a cap 4 which is internally screw threaded and is adapted to be turned into engagement with the complementally threaded end of the fuel conveying tube of 56 the burner construction. In this connection,
it is to be noted that the retort chamber of the burner construction comprises a substantially cylindrical body formed by the coiling of the intermediate portion of the 60 fuel conveying tube, which I shall indicate, for the purpose of convenience, by the numeral 5.
The burner l is provided with a coaxially disposed discharge opening 6 and a sec ond opening 7 of less diameter, the said second opening being disposed at an angle oblique to the coaxial opening 6 in a direction to cause the projecting of a heating flame onto the coiled retort chamber of the burner construction.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, that upon the igniting of the gaseous fuel passing from the discharge openings 6 and 7, a heating flame will be directed from the opening 7 onto the retort chamber of the burner construction, thus, superheating the heavy hydrocarbon oil flowing therethrough and rapidly reducing the same to highly combustible form whereby it may be readily ignitled when discharged from the burner cap Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of our claim, we consider within the spirit of our invention.
We claim In combination with-a superheating fluid fuel burner, a burner proper having a coaxially extending opening and an obliquely disposed opening formed therein, said obliquely disposed opening being of less diamter than the coaxial opening and adapted to project a heating flame onto the retort chamber of the superheating burner.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures hereto.
ROBERT L. BROWN. JAMES A. CARTER.
