STAY BOLT STRUCTURE.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
NVENTOR l 'ZYVESSES ETHAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed April 26, 1918. Serial No. 230,916.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I ETHAN I. Dorms, a citizen of the United tates, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to means for effecting the normal closing of the bearing sleeve, the object of the invention being to provide simple and efiicient means whereby the cap .which normally closes the end of the bearing sleeve over the head of the bolt, may be quickly removed to expose the head of the bolt for testing purposes and which may be as quickly replaced and locked into position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a longitudinal sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4: is a transverse section on the line H of Fig. 1.
1 represents a bearing sleeve having an internal curved face 2 affording a bearing for the head 3 of a staybolt 4. The outer end of the sleeve 1 is provided exteriorly with segmental shoulders 5 and also with a seat 6 for a cap or closure 7. The cap orclosure is made concave for the accommodation of the head of the staybolt and the concavity is of such dimensions and configuration as to provide a suitable clearance 8 for the head of the staybolt.
A head or carrier 9 incloses the cap or 010- sure 7 and is provided with segmental slots 10 through which lugs 11 on the cap or closure project andthese lugs are bent laterally to prevent detachment of the head or carrier from the cap or closure and yet permit slight movements of these parts relatively to each other. 0
The peripheral portion of the head or car rier is made with an angular exterior for the accommodation of a wrench and this portion of said head or carrier is provided at its free edge with inwardly projecting segmental shoulders 12 adapted, when the parts are in normal position, to engage be hind the segmental shoulders 5 of the bearing sleeve.
The under face of the head or provided With cam faces indicated in Fig, 1.
After the cap and carrier assembled they of the bearing sleeve so that the cap will engage its seat thereon and the segmental shoulders 12 of the head be disposed between the segmental shoulders 5 on the bearing sleeve. The operator will then turn the head so that the shoulders 12 will become disposed behind the shoulders 5 and during this operation, the cooperation of the cams 13 and 14: Will cause the cap to be clamped tightly down on its seat at the end of the bearing sleeve and the shoulders 12 to bind firmly against the shoulders 5. It is apparent that by a reversal of the above operation, the cap will be released from the caring sleeve as will also the carrier and both may be quickly removed to expose the head of the staybolt for testing purposes. It will be clear that these parts may be as quickly replaced and secured in position on the bearing sleeve. 7
Having fully described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, of a cap to close the end of the same, a head or carrier having elongated slots, means providing interocking connection of the head or carrier with the bearing sleeve, and lugs on the cap projecting freely through the elongated slots in the head and loosely connecting the cap with said head.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve provided with segmental shoulders, of a cap to seat against the bearing sleeve, a head or carrier inclosing said cap and provided ,with inwardly shall have been will be placed on the end ifi projecting segmental shoulders to engage behind the segmental shoulders of the sleeve, said head also. having segmental slots, lugs projecting outwardly from the cap and passing through said segmental slots, and cams between the head orez rrier and the cap.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two s uhscrih ing W tne se ETHAN I. DODDS.
