To all wh0m it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH ERDEY, a sub- New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trick Cigarette- C ases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in cigarette cases, and particularly those of trick construction, in which the contents are inaccessible except to those having knowledge of the peculiarities of the case.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a case'of composite construction, the separable elements of which may be used to hold goods of the type mentioned but which are maintained against exposure unless the box be manipulated in a particular manner.

These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box sections, indicating the method of separation.

The main or outer part of the case 10 presents a flattened oval in appearance, and is provided with a rigidly formed head 11, the outer opposite end being open and the shape being of the ordinary type, as best suited to fit in the pocket.

Secured to the inner end 11 is a raised plate bracket 12, containing an open slot 14, the same being spaced from the bottom, rigid cover 11 a sufficient distance to allow the square washer 15, formed with a stud 16 upon which is engaged an oppositely disposed washer 17, to slide freely in the slot without interference, a head 18 terminating the outer end of the stud 16.

Engageable within the hollow casing 10 is a neatly fitting slide 20 having one end open and the other provided with a cover 21, attached to the closed side and projecting like a flange beyond the edge of the casing 10, so that it can be readily grasped by the fingers and withdrawn whendesired, without impediment or difficulty whatever.

Slidable within the casing 20 is a third or inner casing 24, the same also having one partially open side and a rigidly formed head 25 on One end, slidable neatly within the casing 20.

The opposite end of the casing 24 is also provided with a head 26, containing a perforation 27 near one end through which the head 18 of the slidable stud 16 is adapted to pass, the body of the stud 16 being engageable within a longitudinal slot 28 extending through the cover from the opening 27.

In order to prevent any of the contents of the inner casing 24 from passing out through the slot 28, an inner partition 30 is secured within the interior of the casing 24, as is also a second, central partition 31, forming two compartments, respectively 32 and 33, within the casing 24, the former of which is adapted to contain cigarettes as indicated particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, while the latter compartment may be used as a receptacle for ashes or the like, the same being normally covered by a leaf 35 having hinges 36 connected with the main or rigidly formed partial cover 37 of the casing 24, the cover 35 being held in a normally open position by means of the spring 38.

The cover 35 is preferably formed of two plates slightly spaced so as to contain between them matches or the like in position where they are readily accessible.

Pivotally engaged with the partition plate 31 is a support 40 to which is engaged, at its upper end, a tray 42, adapted to receive and support cigars, cigarettes, and the like when in a lighted condition, and in such position that any ashes which may drop therefrom will be received within the compartment 33.

In operation, the various sections being contained within the casing 10, the case may be opened by one unfamiliar with the construction by withdrawing the casing 20 by means of the extending flanged head 21, whereupon the casing will apparently present an empty cnditi0n, theinner casing 241 being held by reason of the head 18 engaging in the slot 28 as shown in Fig. 5. However, upon reentering the casing 20,-and'manipulating the case, as by striking lightly upon the lower side, the washers and 17, carrying the stud 16 and head 18, are caused to drop to one side of the container so that the head 18 will register with .the opening 27, whereupon, again Withdrawing the head 21,- both casings and 2 1 are presented, showing. the latter to contain cigarettes, while at the same time, when the partition is withdrawn, the ash receptacle is automatically opened and matches presented within thecover 35, it beingunderstood that the tray 12 is normally turned down and received within the ash compartment.

Thus, if the casebe presented while the slidin elements 15 and 18 are inthe position s hown in Fig. 5, it will apparently be opened but empty, but if the parts be in the position shown in Fig. 4, the cigarettes and-matches areat once accessible.
