To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dansvi'lle, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Repair- Pegs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in pegs, and particularly .to a repair peg for peg racksas used in shoe factories and the like.
An object of my invention is to provide a peg and peg holder which may be used as a repair unit to replace the original pegs as mounted in the racks by the manufacturer, should the same become bent or worn, and which structure is of such character that it can be fitted in place and will hold securely even though the peg opening. has become quite materially enlarged or the wood has been split.
A further object lies in so shaping the re ceiving end of the peg that lasts will not be damaged or split in the use of the peg, and to so construct the holder that if the pegbecomes bent or broken it can be readily replaced, the structure of the holder being such that it is easily adapted to use in woo en .01 metal pegs.
With the above and other objects in view, which will be in part described and in part understood from the specification, drawings, and claims, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more clearly set forth.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view taken in section through a peg bar having my improved peg and holder mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the bar with the repair peg fitted thereto;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken transversely through a peg bar and through a I holder fitted thereto;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective View showing the fastening plate of the holder; and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the peg clamping portion as the same appears before being secured to the fastening plate.
As has been stated, the repalr peg is adapted for use in conjunction with the eg bars as already installed and in use, an the bar 1, as here shown, is of substantially standard form, as is also the peg 2, with the exception that this peg has the outer ends thereof rounded and made substantially ball-- shaped as indicated at 3.
A fastening plate 4, which is substantially L-shaped when in cross section, has a peg reopening 5 therein is also provided with rivet openings 9, which are oppositely disposed on each side of the fluted opening 6, and a rivet opening 10 is provided in the remaining arm of the plate and adjacent the peg receiving opening 5.
A peg holding member, the formation of which is best disclosed in Fig. 6, is bent up from a single piece of metal or formed from a caster, and comprises a sleeve 11 having cars 12 and 13 extending therefrom and provided with alined openings, one of which is screw-threaded. A wing 14: is extended from the sleeve 11 at a point opposite to the extensions of the cars 12 and 13, and these ears 12 and 13 have wings 15 and 16 laterally disposed therefrom, the wings 15 and 16 having the inner sides thereof extending substantially at right angles to the inner side of the wing 14. The wing it has an opening 17 therethrough so located that as the sleeve 11 is lined up with the opening 5 of the fastening plate 4, this opening 17 will register with the opening 10 of the plate, and a rivet 18 is clenched through these registering openings to mount the peg clamping member upon the fastening plate. Slotted openings 19 and 20 are provided in the wings 15 and 16, and rivets 21 and 22 are passed through these slotted openings and through the openings 9 of the fastenin plate 4, the purpose in providing the slotte% openings in these wings and including the fastening plate as at 6, being to provide for expansion and contraction of the sleeve 11 as it is left free to open to its own resiliency or is drawn in through the medium of the clamp screw 23 which is received through the alined openings of the ears 12 and 13.
It will of course be understood that the sleeve 11 will be given angular disposition with respect to the wings 14, 15, and 16, and consequently the fastening plate 4:, which will cause the central opening thereof to be substantially parallel with the angular disposition of the pegs in the bars of the peg rack which is to be repaired, and when a peg is broken out or the bar becomes so worn and split that a peg will not hold, the plate 4; will be fastened in place upon the bar at the proper point by the use of screws or other suitable fastenings, and then the clamp screw 23 is loosened to allow for expansion of the sleeve 11, following which the peg 2 is fitted in place and adjusted to the proper length. Now when tightening inon the clamp screw 23, the ears 12 and 13 are drawn together and in consequence the sleeve 11 is contracted around the peg 2 to clamp the same in rigid mounting.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a repair peg which is of such character that it is particularly adaptable for use in the connection as herein mentioned, but can also be used to advantage in other connections; and, while I have in the foregoing, described a specific embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in practice, I do not limit myself to such specific detail but may resort to practical modifications as to' construction and arrangement of the parts, as well as materials, which may fall within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A repair peg for peg racks including a substantially L-shaped fastening plate provided with openings for reception of fastenings by which the plate is secured upon one of the bars of the rack, said fastening plate having an opening therethrough for reception of the peg, a slit sleeve having wings extending therefrom, fastenings passed through the fastening plate and through the wings of the sleeve to secure the sleeve upon the fastening plate and line the same up with the opening thereof, and a clamp screw by which the sleeve is tightened.
2. A repair peg for peg racks including in combination with a peg, a fastening plate of substantially L-shaped form provided with openings for fastenings by which the same is mounted upon the rack bars, said plate having a peg receiving opening therethrough, and also provided with rivet openings, a sleeve open at one side and having ears extending at the open side, said ears having alined openings therethrough one of which is screw-threaded, wings extending from the sleeve and from the ears, rivets received through the wings and through the rivet openings of the fastening plate, and a clamp screw received through the alined openings of the ears.
