To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLARD A. ELKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Stevens, in the county of Clatsop and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Lighters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an adjustable lighter and has special reference to a device for facilitating the lighting of cigars and cigarettes. I

One object of this invention is the production of an adjustable lighter which is in the form of a hood movably carried upon a match case, whereby the hood may be moved to an inoperative and out-of-the-way position when not in use although it may be swung to an operative position for allowing the cigar or cigarette to be easily inserted thereinto.

Another object of this invention is the production of an adjustable lighter which is so constructed as to shield the ignited match for lighting the cigar or cigarette from the wind and thus permitting a cigar or cigarette to be easily ignited without accidental extinguishing of the match.

Another object of this invention is the production of an adjustable lighter wherein the hood is provided with a disk for igniting the match although the flame will be protected from the wind and also the light of the match will be shielded to prevent a disclosure or signal means given by the light of the matc One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described, and is illustrated in the drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the adjustable lighter and match case in use, a portion of the hood being broken away.

Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, the casing being shown in elevation.

One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention, is disclosed by the preferred embodiment of the device in which the match casing 5 may be of any desired shape, although it is shown as substantially rectangular in cross section thereof provided with the cap 7. The opposite end of the casing is to be closed to prevent the accidental displacement of matches therefrom although this opposite end is provided with a pocket 8, as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2.

The hood of the adjustable lighter is indicated in general at 8 and comprises a back having side walls 10 extending at right angles thereto and parallel to each other. It will be noted that the side walls 10 are channeled as indicated at 11, the channels extending in alinement with each other and longitudinally of the hood, thus permitting a cigar or cigarette to be easily inserted into the interior of this hood. However, it will be noted that the channel portions are formed at a slight distance from the back, thus forming a passage above the channeled portions, as indicated clearly in Fig. 3 for purposes to'be hereinafter set forth. It will be noted that the side walls 10 extend beyond the channeled portions 11 thus forming clamping portions 12 which are out-turned as indicated at 13, thus facilitating the slipping of the hood upon the casing 5.

The journal wall 14 is formed at one end of the hood as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 and carries a pin 15 upon which the disk 16 is rotatably mounted. This journal wall 14 is slotted as indicated at 17, thus permitting the disk 16 to extend into the interior of the hood and also to extend beyond the outer portions of the hood as clearly shown in the drawings.

This hood 8 is provlded with a bearing lug 18 formed adjacent the journal wall 14 and projecting contiguous to the channeled portions 11, as shown in Fig. 1. It will be noted that one of the channeled portions 11 is struck outwardly to form an outwardly bulged web 19 in diagonal alinement with the lug 18, it being noted that by the forming of the web 19 an opening 1s formed through one of the channeled portions 11. When the device is not in use, the side surfaces of the casing 5 and at this time the disk 16 will extend intothe notch 8 zof the casing 5, thus causing the hood to fit snugly,

upon the casing and thus occupy only a minimum amount of space.

When it is desired to use the adjustable lighter, however, it is slipped upwardly and swung around over the upper end of the casing 5 as indicated in Fig. 1, and at thistime the hood. must be pulled far enough from the casing to allow the channeled portions thereof to extend above the upper end of the casing. At this time the cap 7 may be removed and a match may be extracted from the interior of the casing The cap maythen be again placed upon the casing to prevent accidental displacement of the remaining matches. A= cigar or cigarette indicated at 20 maywthenbe inserted into the hood of the adjustable lighter, owing to the channeled construction of the portions 11 until the inner end: of the cigar or cigarette is very near to the disk 16. The match 21 is then inserted through the opening formed in one ofthe channeled portions, 11, the movement of the match being guided by the bulged web 19. Continued inward movement of the match will cause the head 22 thereof to. engage the lug 18 and the periphery of the disk 16, as indicatediin Fig.

The operator may then quickly revolve the disk 16 by his fingers or thumb thereby causing the friction of theperiphery of the disk upon the match head to ignite the match. By having the head bearing upon the, lug '18 any possibility of the match being broken is prevented as this lugconstitutes a reinforcement for the head. As the match is ignited it is obvious it will ignite the cigar or cigarette end there adjacent. The combustion is supported by allowing the first gases to pass outwardly through the channel formedabove the bulged portion as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3.

It will be 'notedthat the device herein described-is particularly adapted forv use during winds when it is very difficult to ignite a match and then light a cigar or cigarette without the match being accidentally extinguished and furthermore a device of the present nature is adapted for use intrenches or on battle fields where itis not desiredto allow the flame of the matchto give a signal and indicate the position of the user, owing'to the fact that asthe flame will be entirely contained within the hood, it will. be shielded from view.

It will-be noted by theldescriptionabove given that the device. may be: used very quickly when desired and may be slipped by the rotation of said to an operative position upon the casing, although when not in use it will fit snugly upon the casing and thus require only a minimum space, since the out-turned edges 13 will facilitate the slipping of the hood over the casing. It will also be noted that the match may be quickly ignited while the position, of the bearing lug prevents the match from being broken and the .web constitutes a guide for directing the match head into correct position for engagement by the disk and lug.

The foregoing description and the draw ings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. Itis to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims. v

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1.. In. a device of the class described, the combination of a hood consisting of a back wall having side walls thereon, means for supporting said hood, a disk carried by said ood, a lug carried by said hood adjacent said disk whereby a match may be placed in engagement with the lug and be ignited disk.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a hood having its side walls longitudinally channeled, a lug formed in said hood adjacent one end thereof, a rotating disk arranged adjacent said lug, one of said channeled sidesbeing struck outwardly to form a bulged-web in alinement with said lug, and igniting means carried by said hood adjacent said lug.

In a device ofthe class described, the combination of a hood consisting of a back having side walls, means for supporting said side walls, said side walls being longitudinally channeled, a rotating disk mounted in said hood, a lugformed in said hood adjacent one end thereof, one of said chan neled portions being struck outwardly to form a bulged web in alinement with said lug, and igniting means carried by said hood adjacent said lug.
