IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,184, dated July 16, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS STREETOR, of Smithland, Woodbury county, in the State of Iowa, have invented a newan d Improved Washing-Machine, which is fully described and set forth in the following specification and accompanyin g drawing.
N atare of the Invention.
My invention consists of a hinged frame provided with a pressure-spring for holding and properly adjusting a fluted roller, in combination with a movable wash-board.
A B (l is a movable wash-board having. small rollers D, and is arranged to slide under a fluted roller, K, upon inclined cleats E fastened to the inside of the box B, as shown in the drawing. J represents the side beams and L O the cross-beams of an adjustable frame, the upper part of which frame is attached by hinges to the end of the box, as shown in the drawing. The lower ends of the sides are provided with proper bearings for the gudgeons of the fluted roller K. M is a spiral spring arranged upon a standard, which is attached to beam L and extends up through the cross-bar N, which is attached upon the top of the box, and is provided with a staypin, all for the purpose of adjusting the position and pressure of the fluted roller to the face of the wash-board, as shown in the drawin g. F is a hinged cap arranged to fit neatly on the top of the box over the upper part of the frame to prevent the water from slopping over. G is a soap-box attached on the side, and H H are handles attached to the ends of the box. The cross-bar O of the wash-board is provided with proper handles for the operator. The clothes are placed above the roller K upon the wash-board, which is moved up and down, pressing the clothes between the small rollers D and the fluted roller K, which, by means of the hinges and spiral spring, adjusts itself to the thickness of the clothes, and the water is thus pressed rapidly back and forth through the clothes till they are thoroughly cleansed.
Claim.
I claim- In a washing-machine the hinged frame J L O with a pressure-spring M, in combination with a fluted roller, K, and a movable washboard, A B G *D, substantially as described.
