EDWARD A. TAYLOR, 0F CHARLESTON, MISSOURI.
SHADE-ROLLER- AND CURTAINZPOL'E SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1919.
Application filed March 28, 1918. Serial No. 225,213.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Charleston, in the county of Mia sissippi and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shade- \oller and Curtain-Pole Supports, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a combined shade roller and ourtain support designed for detachable connection to a window frame.
Another object is to provide, in a device of this character, a resilient member conjoined with the device whereby the latter may be secured to the top arohitrave of a window frame.
Still another object is to provide a device of this kind which is simple in construction, durable and efiective in operation and which may be manufactured at a low price.
Still another object is the provision of adjustable means conjoined with a resilient member, whereby the device may be convenientlyv applied on window frames having difl'erent widths of inside architraves.
'Other and further objects will appear as the invention is set forth in detail in the following description.
To the exact construction herein shown and described, the invention is not to be restricted. Its application in practice may show certain changes or alterations to be of advantage and the rightis claimed to make any which do not depart from the spirit of the subjoined claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a view in elevation of the upper portion of a window frame showing the devices attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the supporting brackets.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. l
In the-drawings, there is shown the upper portion of a window frame having an inside architrave C to which the invention comprising the brackets A and B are attached. These two brackets are identical in construction with the exception of being opposites for attachment to opposite sides of the window and having a further diifen ence residing in the portions which support the shade roller, this portion of the bracket 18 being designed to receive the round stud of the shade roller and the corresponding portion of the bracket A being designed to receive the flat stud which connects with the spring of the shade roller. In all other respects the two brackets are alike and a description of one will suflice for the other.
The bracket 13 comprises the longitudinal member 1 which is made preferably of flat steel, the end of which is turned at right angles to the main portion and appropriately formed to provide the shade roller support 2 for the flat stud of a shaderoller.
At one end of the member 1 a hook member 3 is appropriately attached by riveting or other suitable means, this hook member standing at right angles to the member 1 and having its upper end bent at right angles to its main portion, this right angled end terminating in the depending beveled edge lip 1.
Adjacent the shade. roller support 2, the member 1 has a second hook member 5 which is very similar to the hook member 3, the only difference between the two being that the upper end of this hook member is cut away at the center leaving two hooks 6 with depending lips 7.
Adapted to connect with the longitudinal member 1, there is a plate member 8 which for a specified width at its longitudinal center is raised, so that the two side portions 9 may lie flat against the member 1 while the center portion stands in spaced relation to the latter. The side portions 9 terminate below the upper edge of the plate 8 and are bent back on themselves forming the hook members 10 which engage the upper edge of the longitudinal member 1. A longitudinal slot 11 is cut in the center of the raised portion of the plate 8 and the upper end of this slot is widened to form the rectangular recess 12, a similar recess 13 also being formed so that it extends transversely across the slot 11 near the bottom end of the plate 8.
In either the recess 12 or the recess 13, a hook member 14 is designed to be attached, this hook member being made preferably of flat steel (the plate 8 also being preferably of flat steel) and having a width equal to the widths of the recesses 12 and 13. The depending end of this hook member has formed in it a hole 15 near the bottom of the depending end with which hole one end of'the spiral spring 16 connects. The lower end of the spiral spring- 16 attaches to an eye 17 formed of stout steel wire of which the V-shaped hook member 18 is made, the legs of this V-shaped hook member having their ends turned into a plane at right angles to the plane of the legs, these right angled ends terminating in pointed upwardly directed portions 19.
In the upper end of the plate 8 which stands above the upper edge of the member 1 a rectangular aperture is formed and in this aperture the hooked member 14 may be engaged.
the conventional variety. It is carried by the hook member 5 between the hooks 6 of the latter.
It will be observed that by making the hook members 14 engage the recesses 13 the two brackets may be made to attach to a window frame having a relatively wide architrave. In the event that it is desired to attach the brackets to a window frame having a narrower architrave, the hook members 14L may be made to engage the recesses 12 or the apertures 20, thus providing means for changing the point of connec tion between the hook members and the plate and thereby providing for a uniform tension on the springs 16 when the brackets are attached to window frames having dif ferent widths of architraves.
The manner of attaching the device to a window frame will be easily understood by reference to the drawings. The upper ends of the hook members 3 and 5 are made to engage through the upper edge of the inside architrave of a window frame, the lips v 4: and 7 passing down behind the architrave. By stretching the spring 16, the V-shaped hook member 18 can be made to engage under the lower edge of the corner block of the architrave, thus supporting the bracket firmly in position thereon. It will be observed that the two brackets A and B, when attaching to the window frame can be adjusted with respect to each other, so that the shade roller may be appropriately supported between the two shade roller supports 2, after which the curtain polo may be placed on top of the two curtain pole supports 11, the curved ends of the latter being positioned so that they will support the curtain pole above the shade roller.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A shade roller and curtain pole sup port comprising a body portion having one end turned at right angles thereto and so shaped as to provide a shade roller support; member, a hook member attached to said body portion at either end thereof and adapted to engage the upper edge of the inside architrave of a window frame, a plate member having hooked engagement; with said body portion and provided with recesses obtaining in spaced relation to each other in the direction of the height of the plate, a hook member engaging either one of the two remaining recesses, a spring connecting with the hook member, and a V-shaped hook member connecting with the spring, whereby the device as a whole may be attached to window frames having different: widths of inside architrave.
2. A shade roller and curtain pole support comprising a body portion having one end turned at right angles thereto and so shaped as to provide a curtain pole support, a hook member attached to said body portion at either end thereof, the hook member standing upwardly with respect to the body portion and being provided with end portions turned at right angles and terminating in depending lips adapted to engage behind the inside architrave of a window frame, a plate member hai ing hooked engagen'ient on the upper edge of said body portion and being provided with recesses obtaining in spaced relation to each other in the direction of the height of the plate, a hook member engaging either one of the two remaining recesses, a spring connecting with the hook member, and a V-shaped hook member connecting with the spring, whereby the device as a whole may be attached. to window frames having different widths of inside architrave.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EDWARD A. TAYLOR.
