PORTABLE CIRCULAR SAW.

To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that T, WILLIAM SCHMID- BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Silverton, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Circular Saws, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relatesto improvements in portable circular saws.
Une object of this invention is the production of a portable motor saw wherein the driving mechanism is carried within a casing upon which the motor is carried, and a saw is driven by the driving mechanism and extends to an operative position beyond the outer portion of the casing.
Another objectof this invention is the production of a motor saw, wherein a ortion of the saw is guarded to-prevent in ury to the operator, the casing also being protltl vided with a partition for preventing the saw dust from flying into the driving gears.
Another object of this invention is the production of a motor saw including a casing which is provided with a removable wall, thus facilitating the removal of the saw for sharpening or for permitting the placing of another saw in an operative position when necessary.
One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described, and is illustrated in the accompanyin drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a ont elevation of the portable motor saw, and Fig. 2. is a central 'vertical section through the device.
Tn the preferred embodiment of the present invention, about to be described, it will be seen that the casing 5 comprises a bowed rear wall 6 and a partition it. The partition 7 is substantially parallel to the rear wall 6. The annular wall 6 extends from the partition 7 and is fixed in any desired manner upon the rear wall 6, thus forming an inclosed compartment. The motor, which is indicated in general at 9 is flxed by bolts 10 upon the outer surface of the rear wall 6 and may be controlled by the switch 11 journaled in a bearing 14: formed in the partition 7.
An enlarged driving gear 15 is keyed upon the shaft 13 and is carried within the inclosed compartment. The shaft 16 is carried by the rear Wall 6, the partition 7 and removable front wall to be hereinafter referred to. The reduced gear 17 is keyed upon the shaft 16 and meshes with the enlarged driving gear 15. Therefore when the motor is in operation and the haft 13 is rotating, the enlarged driving gear 15 will rotate and in turn impart rotary motion through the gear 17 to the shaft 16. 1
A fixed front wall v18 is formed on the casing at the junction of thepartition 7 and the annular wall 8 and is bowed outwardly to form a hood-like structure. This front wall has a curved flanged edge 19.
The removable front wall 20 has ears 21 formed thereon through which the retaining elements 22 are passed for fixing the front.
wall 20 upon the front wall 18. llt should be noted that the edge of the removable wall 20 engages the flange 19, which forms an abutment for steadying or reinforcing the removable wall 20. This removable wall 20 is provided with a bearing 23 in which the forward end of the shaft 15 removably fits.
The circular saw 2 1 is removably keyed upon the shaft 16 and extends between the partition and the removable wall 20. Therefore, it is obvious that as the shaft 16 is rotated, rotary motion will be imparted to the saw 24. As the saw extends for considerable distance beyond the casing, it is obvious it may be placed in engagement with articles to be sawed and owing to the rotary motion of the saw, this operation will be easily performed.
In order to support the saw casing, the handle 25 is formed or fixed upon the annular wall 8, while a grip 26 is flxedupon the removable wall 20.
When so desired, the retaining elements 23 may be removed and thus permit the removable front wall 20 to be removed from'engagement with the flxed front wall 18 and the flange 19 thereof. its the bearing 29 disengages the front end of the shaft 16, it is obvious the saw 24lmay also be removed from engagement with the shaft 16. itccordingly, the saw may be sharpened or if so desired may be replaced by another saw. After this operation, the bearing 23 may be again slippedover the front end of the shaft 16 for constituting a support therefor and also for holding the saw against displacement.
It will be noted that the partition 7 will prevent the saw dust thrown from the teeth of the saw from flying onto the gears carried within the casing and, interfering with the operation thereof. The hood and the removable wall also protect portions of the saw edge which are not necessary in operation and for this reason need not be exposed. However, as the hood of the casing is open at its lower portion, the saw dust will very quickly fall therefrom.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangementand combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the ap- I pended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In' a device ofthe class described, the combination of a casing, said casing including a rear wall, a partition extending substantially parallel to the rear wall, an annu-' lar wall formed upon the partition and connected to the rear wall, a motor fixed upon the outer portion of said rear wall, said motor havinga shaft extending therefrom and carried by said rear wall and said partition,
a gear keyedupon said shaft, a second shaft carried by said wall and said partition, a gear keyed upon the last mentioned shaft and meshing with the first mentioned gear, whereby when the first mentioned gear is rotated, rotary motion will be imparted through the last mentioned gear to said second mentioned shaft, and a saw keyed upon the last mentioned shaft to be rotated therewith.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing including an inclosed compartment, gears rotatably mounted within said compartment, means for driving said gears, a fixed front wall constituting a hood like structure for the forward portions of said casing, said front wall having a bearing flange thereon, a removable wall engaging the bearing flange.
Wall, a partition extending substantially parallel to the rear wall, an annular wall formed on the partition and connected to said rear wall, thus constituting an inclosed compartment, a motor fixed upon the outer second shaft carried by said wall and partition, a gear keyed thereon and meshing with the first mentioned gear, whereby when the motor is running rotary motion will be imparted through said gears to the last mentioned shaft, a front fixed wall extending from the partition, said front fixed wall having a flange thereon, a removable front wall carried by said flange, means for holding the removable wall in a set position, said last mentioned shaft also being journaled 1n the removable wall, a saw keyed upon said shaft between the partition and the removable Wall, said saw extending beyond the casing, and supporting elements carried upon said annular wall and said removable wall.

In a device of the class described,,the combination of a supporting means, driving means carried by said supporting means, a hood like wall carried by said supporting means, a saw removably carried by said su porting means and being actuated by said driving means, and a removable wall mounted upon said hood-like wall, said removable wall constituting a ouard for a portion of said saw, and also ho lding the saw in an operative position.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing including a partition and a front wall, driving means carried by said casing, a saw supported by said cas ing and being actuated by said driving means, a removable wall releasably connected to said front wall for constituting a guard for said saw and also holding said saw in position.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing including a partition and a flanged front wall, driving means carried within said casing and having a shaft extending beyond the partition, a saw removably carried upon said shaft, and a removable wall engaging the flanged front wall of said casing for supporting said shaft, for releasably holding said saw in an operative position and at the same time guarding a portion of the saw.
