To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, SEBA H. HAWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Jig Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This. invention relates to sawing devices, particularly to those of the jig saw type, and has for its object the provision of a sawing device supported upon rollers whereby to'be' readily portable and including a power driven reciprocatory saw cutting below the surface upon which the rollers travel, the device being designed primarily for cutting off the edges of car roofs and the like during their construction, for but ting smoke pipe holes in roofs and the like, or for ripping or cross-cutting upon any flatsurface where the use of hand tools is disadvantageous.
An important object is the provision of a sawing device which has an angularly' adjustable frame whereby a vertical. cut may be made in an inclined surface or an inclined cut in a horizontal surface.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to operate, eflicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my device,
Figure 2 is an elevation taken at right angles to Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown my device as comprising-a supporting base 10 which is triangular in shape and formed of any suitable metal such as sheet steel or the like. At its corners the base carries depending arms 11 upon which are journaled rollers 12 which all face in the same direction and which provide means facilitating the movement of the entire device. Bolted or otherwise secured to the platform or base 10 is a support 13 upon which is mounted the power device, which in the present instance is represented conventionally as being an electric motor 14 having a shaft 15.
Hinged upon the topof the platform 10, as shown at 16, is an upstanding support 17 to which is bolted, a support 18 which has its upper end extended horizontally, as shown at 19. The upper end of thissupport is slotted, as shown at 20, and engaged through this slot is a bolt 21' extending through a bearing which is slidablyadjustable upon the upright. Secured upon the base 10 toward the corner thereof fan thest from the upright 17 is a similar bearing member 23. The numeral'2t designates an elongated rectangular loop which has its ends engaged within the bearing members 22 and 23 and which forms an effectual brace for the upright 17. Formed" on the" lower end of the upright 18 is a horizontal portion parallelwith and of the same size and shape asthe' horizontal extension 19. This upright 18', with its horizontal ends 19 and 25, constitutes a guide frame for a reciprocatory bar 26 which is. slidable through slots 27 in. the extensions 19 and 25.
Secured upon the hinge member 16 a bar 28 which has its upper end extended vertically to form bearing for a shaft 29 which is connected with a motor shaft 15 by any suitable flexible connection such as that indicated roughly at 30. The shaft 29 is also journaled through the uprights 17 and 18 and has its other end formed with a crank 31 upon which is engaged a pitman 32 which has its upper end connected with the bar 26, as shown at 33. Securedupon the lower end of the bar 26 is asaw blade indicated at 34.
Disposed at one edge of the base 10 is an L-shaped strip 35 which has its edge ccinciding with one long edge of the base. This strip is adjustable on the base by means of bolts 36 which pass through the base and through elongated slots 37 in the strip. Secured upon the depending vertical arm of this strip is an L-shaped strip 38 upon the horizontal portion of which is secured, as shown at 39, a strip 10. Disposed. below the strip 40 is an L-shaped strip 411 held. in
adjusted position by a bolt 42. This structure constitutes a combined guide and gage for the sawing device.
In the operation of the device it will be seen that when the motor is run and the shaft 29 rotating the consequent movement of the pitman 32 will cause reciprocation of the bar 26 and saw blade 34. It will be observed that the saw cuts always below the surface upon which the wheels 12 roll so that the device will efficiently perform its function of cutting off the edges of car roofs and the like in a very quick and efficient manner. It will be noted that the strip extends below the rollers and beyond the edge which has been sawed so as to form an effective guide or gage for insuring the proper travel of the saw. It is also to be noted that the strips and. 4-1 engage against the back or rear edge of the saw so thatthe saw will be effectively braced to reduce its liability of breaking. If the de vice is to be used for cutting holes in roofs, floors or the like, it is apparent that the member 35 and its associated parts may be removed. In some instances it may be desired to cut vertically even though the device be traveling upon an inclined surface such as a roof or the like, or to make an inclined cut in a horizontal surface. Owing to the adjustability of the frame 18 at the hinge 16, it will be apparent that such cutting may be effected. The provision of the flexible drive connection between the motor shaft and the operating shaft of the saw permits adjustment of the frame without there being any danger of binding.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart fromthe spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim: v
1. A device of the character described comprising a wheeled base, an upright frame hingedly mounted upon said base, a brace member pivoted upon the base and pivotally and slidably connected with the upper portion of said upright frame, a power device mounted on the base, a shaft journaled through said frame and driven by said power device, a flexible connection between the power device and said shaft, a crank portion on said shaft, a reciprocatory bar slidable through said frame and connected with said crank portion, and a saw carried by said bar.
2. A device of the character described comprising a wheeled base, an upright frame hingedly mounted upon said base, a brace member pivoted upon the base and pivotally and slidably connected with the upper portion of said upright frame, a power device mounted on the base, a shaft journaled through said frame and flexibly connected with said power device whereby to be driven thereby, a crank portion on said shaft, a reciprocatory bar slid-able through said frame and connected with said crank portion, and a saw carried by said bar, said saw extending downwardly'below the lowermost point of the wheels whereby to out the surface upon which the wheels travel.
