Description

C. A. JARVIS. RECEPTACLE CLEANER, APPLICATION FILED mm: :2. 1918.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. JARVIS, OF EAST BALTIC, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 AUGUSTINE ADOLPHUS MACDONALD, 0F SOURIS, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, CANADA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. RECEPTACLE-CLEANER.
Patented Jan. '7, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. JARVIS, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at East Baltic, county of Kings, Prince Edward Island, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in receptacle cleaners.
An important object of this invention is to provide a receptacle cleaner having means for eficiently and expeditiously cleaning a receptacle, such as a cuspidor, or the like, without the necessity of the operator handling the receptacle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle cleaner having a chain mop adapted to be placed within the receptacle, and by a rotary movement of the mop within the receptacle to eflect the expeditious cleaning of the receptacle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a receptacle cleaner, which is neat in appearance, few in parts and of highly simplified construction.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved receptacle cleaner, showing the same applied to a cuspidor,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved receptacle cleaner,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my improved receptacle cleaner, showing the chain mop secured to the forward portion thereof, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section through a cuspidor, showing my improved receptacle cleaner in operation.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a pair of tongs, having handles 6 and jaws 7 In accordance with the usual construction, the tongs are pivotally connected, as at 8. Attached to one of the jaws 7, and on the outer surface thereof, is a brush 9. An aperture 10, arranged in the forward end portion of one of the jaws 7 is adapted for the reception of a link 11 securing a chain mo 12 to the jaw 7. As clearly shown in Flg. 1, the chain mop 12 is adapted to be arranged in a cuspidor 13, or the like, with a small quantity of water. By engaging the upper portion 14 of the cuspidor with the jaw 7 of the tongs, it is obvious that by grasping the handles 6 and efiecting a rotary movement of the water and the mop within the cuspidor, the cleaning of the cuspidor will be accomplished without the necessity of the operator handling the same. To efliect the cleaning of the upper surface 14 of the cuspidor the brush 9 is engaged therewith. To pre vent the mop 12 from interfering with the operation of the brush on the upper sur face 14 of the cuspidor, the same is held securely between the jaws 7 as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
While I have shown and described my invention as applied to a cuspidor, it is obvious that the same may be applied to any desired receptacle, and it is also understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A receptacle cleaner comprising, a pair of tongs, and a mop carried by the forward portion of one of the tongs and adapted to be arranged within a receptacle, said tongs being adapted to engage the receptacle to permit of the contents therein to be stirred by a circular movement of the receptacle by a movement of the tongs.
2. A receptacle cleaner comprising, a pair of tongs, said tongs including handles, and a pair of pivoted jaws, one of said pivoted jaws having an aperture through its forward end portion thereof; and a chain mop connected to said tongs, one of the links of the chain mop extending through the aperture in said jaw, said pivoted jaws being adapted to engage a receptacle, thus per- In testimony whereof I affix my signature mitting the chain mop to be arranged in presence of three witnesses. therem- CHARLES A. JARVIS.
3. A receptacle cleaning apparatus comprising a pair of tongs, having pivoted Witnesses:
jaws; a chain mop secured to the forward A. F. MGQUAID, end of one of the jaws; and a brush secured GERTRUDE MGEACHEON, to one of the jaws. W. B. LEARD.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner 0! Patents.
