Description

G. WRAGE.
CABLE HANGER.
APPLICATION man JUNE I2. ms
Patented Dec. 31, 1918..
GUSTAVE WRAGE, OF
ATENT OFFICE.
LEWISTON, MINNESOTA.
CABLE-HANGER.
Application filed June 12, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gos'ravn \Vnxcn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Vinona and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Cable-Hanger, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a hanger for cables and is especially designed for use at the top of a barn door for the purpose of supporting the cable of a manure carrier or the like while said cable is not in use, thereby permitting the door of the barn to be easily closed or opened without interference by the cable.
Heretofore where cables have been extended through the doors of barns, they have sagged to such an extent as to seriously interfere with the opening or closing of the doors. It has been necessary to hold up the cable during the swinging of the doors and this has, obviously, been diflicult.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple form of hanger which, when placed in position, will grip and support the cable it being possible, however, to readily release the cable so that it will drop out of engagement with the hanger and allow the carrier to move along the cable after the doors of the barn have been opened.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
. In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown. In said drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the hanger, one of the positions of the movable member pf the hanger being indicated by dotted mes.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hanger.
Fig. 3 is a section on line A-B Fig. 1.
Fig. 4. is a section on line C-D Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of the top of a door frame and secured thereto is a base plate 2 having a depending jaw 8 cut away along its inner side to form a substantially semi-circular recess 4 near the upper Specification of Letters Patent.

end of the jaw and a wing 5 one edge of which merges into the wall of the recess 1 at its upper end. and, at its lower end, into a deflecting edge 6. A lever 7 is fulcrumed as at 8 upon the plate 2 and is provided at its lower end with a jaw 9 similar to the jaw 23 but arranged oppositely thereto, this jaw 9 having a substantially semi-circular recess 10 in the upper portion of its inner side, while a wing 11 is arranged below the recess and has its edge merging into the wall of the recess and also into a deflecting edge 12. Both of the wings 5 and 11 are reduced in thickness so that when the two jaws are closed together, the two wings will lap, as shown particularly in Fig. 4. A spring 13 is connected to the upper end of lever 7 and is inclined downwardly away from said lever and is secured to the structure 1 as indicated at 14:. This spring serves to hold the jaws 3 and 9 normally pressed toward each other with wings 5 and 11 in lapped relation and with the deflecting edges 6 and 12 diverging downwardly from the wings. When the jaws are in their normal position the recesses l and 10 cooperate to provide a substantially circular cable receiving opening 15.
hen the supporting cable of the carrier is not in use it is designed to be held out of the way of the doors of the barn by being gripped between the jaws 3 and 9 so that the cable will be held within the opening 15. \Vhen it is desired to use the carrier the same is moved along the cable to a position close to the jaws 3 and 9 whereupon by pulling downwardly and laterally on the carrier so as to press laterally upon the jaw 9, said jaw will swing laterally away from the jaw 3,
as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus releasing the cable which will be free to sag to position below the aws so that the carrier can readily pass therealong. After the cable has been used, it can be thrust upwardly in any manner desired against one or both of the deflecting edges 6 and 12, thus causing the jaw 9 to move away from the jaw 3 and permitting the cable to become seated within the opening 15, where it will be supported as hercinbefore described.
\Vhat is claimed is The combination with a supporting structure. of a cable hanger including a base plate fixedly attached to said structure, a fixed jaw depending from the base plate, a lever fulcrumed on the base plate, a jaw extending therefrom, said jaws having lapping Wings provided with downwardly diverging defleeting edges, there being recesses within the upper portions of the jaws and above the wings and cooperating to form a cable re- 7 5 ceiving recess, said lapping wings cooperating with the opposed jaws to limit the movement of the jaws toward each other and prevent binding upon the inserted cable, and yielding means for holding the jaws pressed 10 toward each other, the downwardly diverging deflecting edges cooperating to form a recess for the reception of a cable while being pressed upwardly against the jaws.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature 15 in the presence of two witnesses.
