ELISI-IA. E. A. MARTIN, OF UNION CITY, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO I-I. A. BECK, 0F UNION CITY, TENNESSEE.
GRAIN-DOOR FOR CARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELISHA E. A. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Obion, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GrainDoors for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grain cars and more especially to a grain door for such a car.
One object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple and efficient door of this character and of improved construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved form of grain door of this character which will not readily be lost from the car.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel arrangement of details and combina tions of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a view of the interior of a car equipped with this inven tion, showing door in use in full lines and out of use in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The numeral 10 indicates the usual car floor and at 11 is shown the side plate. Between the car floor and the side plate extend body posts 12 and side body braces 13.
At 11 is indicated the siding and at 15 is the inside lining which in this instance is preferably made of sheet metal.
The door posts, indicated at 16 have upon one side of the door a recess portion 17 and on that side of the door the inside lining 15 continues up to cover the recess portion and make a channel shaped recess. Upon the other side of the door the post 16 is cut away as indicated at 18 and a shoulder is arranged at the bottom of the cut away portion. Upon this side of the door the body post and brace y are also cut away to correspond with the cut away portion of the door post 16. In order to cover the cut away portion 1S there is provided a strip 19 having a shoulder 2O so arranged that the upper portion of the strip Specification of Letters Patent.

is wider than the lower portion and this strlp 19 is positioned in spaced relation to the inside lining 15 on that side of the grain door. The strip 19 is also continued laterally as shown at 21 and forms in connection with the out away portion of the members 12 and 13 and the upwardly extending edge of the lining 15 on that side of the door a pocket.
The space between the strip 19 and the lining 15 forms what is preferably termed a guide slot 22, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained. The grain door proper comprises a body portion 23 of such length as to slide smoothly between the member 18 and the recess portion of the opposite post 16. This grain door is provided with a lug 21 of such size as to sn'ioothly fit the slot 22. The door is also provided with a, countersunk handle or grip portion 25.
lVhen the door is closed it will occupy the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and is held in that position by means of a suitable pin 26 received in openings formed in the lining 15, post 16 and door 23. Then it is desired to remove the door and place it out of the way the pin 26 is withdrawn and the door raised, being guided on one side by the recess 17 and on the opposite side by the pin 24 moving in the slot 22. This pin also prevents the door from becoming detached from the car and lost. Then the door has been raised until the pin 24 strikes the shoulder 20 it is then slid laterally into the pocketformed by the cut away portions of the members 16, 13 and 12, the said pin or lug sliding and bearing on the upper edge of the lining 15 and hence supporting the inner end of the door in elevated position, the outer end of the door being held in thatposit-ion by means of a pin 27 similar to the pin 26 and similarly arranged.
It will be noted by this construction that an extremely simple form of grain door is provided which cannot become detached and lost from the ear while at the same time it is arranged to work in a smooth and eiiicient manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
.A car having a door opening, door posts, a sliding door movable horizontally and vertically across one of the posts, the other post having a guide channel for the reception of the outer end of the d oor and said door having when lowered, and bearing on the upper edge of the lining and supporting the inner end of the door when the latter is in elevated open position, and means to support the outer end of the door when the latter is in such position.
In testimony whereof, I aiax my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
