LASTING-NAIL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPl-IANOS LIoLios, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Mississippi and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lasting-Vails, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is designed for the principal purpose of providing a lasting-nail peculiarly adapted for the attachment of rubher and paper heels and soles.
The invention is designed further to provide a nail of this character, the depth-to which it may be driven into the shoe being limited to a point where a relatively great portion of the nail will remain in the rubber and paper heel after the secured attachment of the latter to the shoe.
The invention is still further designed to provide a lasting-nail simple in construction, durable and effective in the performance of its function and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention is still further designed for other purposes and objects which will appear as the following detail description progresses.
To the exact construction in which it is shown and described the invention is not to be restricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are comprehended in spirit by the subjoined claim.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown the heel portion 1 of a shoe, to which is at tached the rubber heel 2, the latter being secured to the said heel portion by the improved lasting-nail. The heel 2 is in the usual way with a hole 3 on the bottom to receive the head 4 of the nail, the latter being formed with the shoulder portion 5 and a clencher portion 6. V

the improved nail, the heel is provided with the usual nail holes whose diameter is equal to the diameter of the body portion 5 of the nail and on the'bottom of the heel, these holes are counterbored, or molded to leave the counterbored portion 3. The nails 3 are inserted through the heel 2 and the clencherportions 6 driven through the heel portion 1 of the sole of the shoe, the last turning the top of the clencher portion to efiect the firm clenching of the latter in the sole. The nails are so designed that this clencher portion is of just suflicient length to permit its penetrating the shoe sole and being turned to form the clencher referred to, the body portion of the shoulder 5 resting on the bottom of the sole and thus preventing the clencher portion from penetrating the sole further than a prescribed distance.
This construction is advantageous in that, as the heel wears down to a point where it exceeds the nail, the nail cannot be forced into the shoe by the continued walking on the heel, as the bottom of the shoulder 5 prevents this and the nail is thus kept from being forced into the shoe to a point where it would make uncomfortable contact with the foot and prevents vibration which wears the nail hole larger in the sole.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
A lasting nail formed with a round body portion and head and a clencher portion protruding from that end of the body portion oposite the head, the clencher portion being flat and having its longer cross sectional dimension equal to the diameter of the body portion and its flat sides set in from diametrically opposite sides of the body port-ion, so as to provide right angular shoulders at the juncture of the body portion and clencher portion which shoulders appear one on each side of the clencher portion, whereby the nail is precluded from being driven farther than will bring its shoulders into contact with'the outer face of the object into which the clencher portion is driven.
