Description
March 30 1926. 1,578,460
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE; Q
J S.MI'1GHELL, or STUTTGART, ARKANSAS.
SHOE SOLE.
Applicationfiled January 28, 1925. Serial No. 5,272.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J S. 'MrrcrrnLL,
I a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Stuttgart, in the county of Arkansas and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Shoe Sole-of which the followingis a specification.
' edge of a shoe.
A further object is to provide a shoe sol of the above mentioned character, which is simple in. construction, inexpensive, strong and furthermore adapted'for the purposes for which it is designated. I
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanylng drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same: 1 I
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the shoe sole embodyin my invention.
Figure, 2 is an edge elevation thereof, and
Figure 3 is a sectional viewtaken approXi-.
mately on line of Figure 1.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a shoe sole which is formed of a single piece of leather. The outer edge 2 of the shoe sole is slit for its entire length as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawing. The slit 3 extends inwardly to the longitudinal center of the'sole as also illustrated in Figure 1 as well as in Figure3.
Adapted to be inserted between the divided portions 4 and 5 formed by theslit 3 in the outer edge of the sole'l is a wedge shaped piece of leather 6. The usual shoemakers cement is used for securing the wedge 6 in the slit 3 formed inthe outer edge of the sole 1. and after. the wedge has been inserted and cemented in the slit between the divided portions 4: and 5, the outer edge of the wedge is trimmed to conform with the outer edge of the sole.
As further illustrated in Figure 2 ofthe drawing, the portion of the wedge which is dispos d adjacent the toe portion of the sole is tapered gradually as illustrated at 7 "The provision of. a shoe sole of the above mentionedcharacter, will cause the portion of the sole which is adapted to be disposed adjacent the outer edge of the shoe to be of greater thickness than the remaining por tion of the sole as clearly illustrated in- Fig-f ure 3. As stated above, the outer edge .of
the sole is subject to most wear and by pro-.
viding the insert in the slit formed in the outer edge of the sole, the durability of the sole is increased and thereby'will prevent the shoe from losing its shape. I I I The provision'of a sole of this character furthermore will save a shoemaker'considerheretofore necessary to inserta number of patches between the welt and the sole or else tack on a patch on the bottom of the sole at the outer edge thereof. Furthermore the provision'of asole of the abovementioned character will not aifect the .appearanceof the shoe. I
While I have shown the'preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and} arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the in: vention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the "invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An outer sole for shoes, the outer-edge thereof being slit longitudinally for its entire length, said slit extending inwardly to posed adjacent the outer edge of a shoe 1s of greater thickness'than the remaining portion of the sole, the portion'of said wedge adjacent the toe portion of the sole tapering I gradually toward the end of the wedge.
ture.
J s. MITCHELL.
In testimony whereof" I aifix my signaable time and labor in repairing shoes as 3 I
