SCREEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed August 24, 1916. Serial No. 116,714.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADAM GoTLIEB HoUoK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Manchester, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an adjustable sorting and grading device, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel screen which may be easily and quickly adjusted to provide interstices, slots or openings of various sizes through which dirt, foreign matter and undersized matter may fall when sorting or grading dirt, vegetables, sand, gravel and such matter classified by sizes.
Another object of this invention is to provide a slatted screen or platform with a bag holding device into which sorted or graded matter may be easily placed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the abovetype wherein the parts are constructed with a view of reducing the cost of manufacture and at the same time retain those features by which durability, simplicity of construction, and ease of assembling are secured. With such ends in view my invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and then clearly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a bottom plan of the sorting and grading device, partly broken away;
Fig. 2 is a plan of a portion of the device showing the manner in which the slats of the device may be adjusted to provide slots or spaces of different sizes;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1, illustrating approximately one-half of the device;
Fi 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the lme IVIV of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line V-V of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional View of a portion of the device.
In describing my invention by aid of the views above referred to, I desire to point out that the same are intended as merely illustrative of an example whereby my invention may be put into practice, and I do not care to confine myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts shown. The following description is therefore to be broadly construed as including substitute constructions and arrangement of parts which are the obvious equivalent of those to be hereinafter referred to.
In the drawings, 1 denotes longitudinal side frames or walls provided with inwardly projecting spaced and oppositely disposed bearings 3. Pivotally connected to the bearings 3 are arms 4, the arms of one frame being pivotally connected, as at 5 to the arms of the other frame. The arms 4: support longitudinal parallel slats 6 and said slats are pivotally connected, as at 7, to the lower faces of the arms 4.
Arms 8 are pivotally connected to the bearings 2 by bolts or pins 9 and said arms are also pivotally connected to the slats 6 as at 10. The arms 8 have the inner ends thereof cut away and overlapped, as at 11, and pivotally connected together by an eye bolt 12. The eye bolt 12 extends through a spacer block 13, and said bolt supports the inner cut away and overlapped ends 14 of the auxiliary arms or supports 15, said arms having the outer end thereof pivotally held by the posts or pins 9. The auxiliary arms or supports 15 have end walls 15*, cooperating with the side frames or walls 1 in forming an inclosure.
The eye bolt 12 holds the forward end of the longitudinal guide plate 16 and said guide plate is further held by the pivotal connection 5 of the set of arms 4 adjacent the arms 8. The inner end of the guide plate 16 is upturned and apertured to provide a guide 17 for a longitudinal adjusting rod 18, said rod extending through the eye 19 of the bolt 12 and provided with a suit able hand piece 20. The rod 18 is locked relative to the eye 19 of the bolt 12 by a set screw 21.
Pivotally connected to the adjusting rod 18, as at 22, are the inner ends of links 23. said links having the outer ends thereof pivotally held by the pins or bolts 9.
With the adjustable rod 18 shiftable longitudinally of the device, said rod may be moved and through the medium of the links 23 moves the side frames 1 to and from each other, thereby increasing or decreasing the area of the interstices or slots between the slats 6.
Hinged or otherwise connected to the frames 1 are end walls 24 having the ends thereof pivotally connected or hinged as at 25. These end walls as well as the arms contiguous thereto are provided with bag supporting members 26 from which a bag or other receptacle may be suspended, said bag supporting members constituting simple and effective means for attaching the open end of a bag to the device, whereby sorted and graded matter may be placed in the bag. The walls 15 may be hinged similar to thewalls 24.
That I claim is In a screen having side frames adapted to be shifted to and from each other, end sets of arms pivotally connected to the inner walls of said frames, intermediate sets of arms connected to said frames and extendmg 1n thesame dlrection as said end sets of arms, auxiliary arms connected to said 7 7 frames n parallelism with one of sald end sets of arms, slats pivotally connected to Copies '0! this patent may be obtained for the eye of said bolt nected to said frames at end set of arms and extending 1n toward thefive cents each,
Washington, D. 0.
said end sets of arms and pivotally connected to the intermediate sets of arms, a
spacer block common to the parallel sets of arms, an eye bolt connecting the ends of said parallel sets of arms at one end of said screen and extending through said spacer block, means for holding said frames and arms in adjusted positions, said means comprising a central longitudinal guide plate held by said eye bolt, an adjustable rod in and extending through one end of said guide plate, and links coni the ends of one intermediate sets of arms and connected to said rod.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ADAM GOTLIEB HOUGK.
