WILLIAM PORTER ADAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'IO ADAMS & ELTING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
STOPPER FOR RECEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed January 22, 1917. Serial N oi 143,852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PORTER ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stoppers for cans or like receptacles, and more particularly to that class of such devices in which the st0pper is provided with a spout to facilitate the pouring of the liquid contents of the can into small openings, such as the pouring of carbon remover from the can into the pet cocks and spark plug holes of an internal combustion engine, filling storage batteries or wherever it is necessary or desirable to use or apply small quantities of liquid, and the invention has for its primary object the provision of a device of the character set forth which shall be efiicient in operation, eco- .cure the desired result.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, as will from time to time hereinafter appear, this invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of the various elements of a receptacle stopper, as described in the following specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying device forming a portion of this specification and inwhich the same reference characters indicate the same parts wherever used,
Figure 1 is a detail perspective of a can provided with my improved stopper;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail perspective, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the stopper showing the parts in separated relation.
4L designates a can or receptacle of any suitable dimensions adapted to contain a liquid which has to be dispensed therefrom, and provided with the usual stopper-receiving neck 5. p A spout 6 having a curved outer end 7 is provided at its inner end with a flange 8 adapted to hold in position a disk 9 having a flange 10 which engages the spout in such manner as to prevent vertical movement of the disk thereon.
A plug stopper 11, which may be formed of cork or any other suitable material is provided with a central opening 12 through which passes the spout 6 as shown. The stopper 11 is placed in position upon the spout 6 at the lower end thereof adjacent the disk 9 and spurs 13, 14 are struck up from the disk 9 by any suitable punching operation and forced into the stopper 11 engaging the same and holding it in position upon the spout 6 adjacent the disk 9, thus forming a complete plug stopper provided with a pouring spout.
In practice the can is shipped with any usual type of stopper in the neck 5 and my improved pouring spout additionally provided.
When it is desired to pour the liquid from the can the plug 11 is placed within the neck 5 and the liquid dispensed from the spout 6 by slightly squeezing the sides of the can in a well known manner, the curved spout portion 7 providing a very efficient and convenient means for conveying the liquid into the pet cocks, spark plug holes, and other small openings of an engine or like machinery, openings in storage batteries or elsewhere where it is necessary or desirable to use or apply small quantities of liquid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a combined stopper and pouring spout, a disk having an opening therethrough and a flange surrounding said opening and receiving the lower end of the spout, spurs struck from said disk and extending upwardly therefrom, and a plug stopper having a central opening and threaded over said spout and engaged by the spurs on the disk, whereby said parts are held in assembled relation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM PORTER ADAMS.
Witnesses:
ALLEN M. REED, EDWIN S. ROGERS.
