Description

W. A. WHITNEY & (I G. SEAVER.
inking-Pad.
Patented July 9,182'2.
INVEN UNITED STATEs WILLIAM A. WHITNEY AND CHARLES G. SEAVER, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN lNKlNG-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,834, dated July 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. WHIT- NEY and CHARLES G. SEAVER, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Inking-Pads; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon:
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the band and its attachments.
This invention has relation to ink-pads for printing dies or stamps, and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices for securing the porous pad-cover to the box containing the saturated padding, and for drawing said pad-cover to its proper tension, substantially as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a cylindrical box of any desirable size, to contain the padding E, which may consist of wool, sponge, or other suitable material adapted to hold ink, with which it is to be fully saturated before being covered. B represents the pad-cover, for which chamois-skin or any other suitable material may be used. This cover being laid over the padding is drawn down to the sides of the box A and encircled by means of an elastic band of metal, 0. At
the ends of said band lugs a a are formed,'for the purpose of holding a thumb-screw, b, by turning which the band is tightened or loosened as desired. D represents arms projecting from the lower part of the box A, and bent up at right angles. These arms, being threaded, pass through slotted ears (1 projecting from the band C, and hold adjusting taps d, which are used for the purpose of pressing the band 0 down as far as necessary to tighten the pad-cover. Before the cover is applied it should have its edges attached to a metal ring, 0, upon which the band will rest, and which, when the band is pressed down, will allow the cover to be drawn evenly and to the proper tension. When the ink is exhausted the cover may be easily taken off and the padding resaturated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an inking-pad, the threaded arms D, holding the taps d and secured to the box A, and the elastic band (J having the lugs a a, ears d, and the adjusting-screw b combined, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the above, we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
