HAND-STAMP.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Application filed September 8, 1916. Serial No. 118,959.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we,
HARRY SVFOLGER citizens of the and residents of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful and Josnrrr C. JULIEN,
Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to hand stamps and has for its object improvement in such stamps.
In .the accompanying drawings, which are allon an enlarged scale,
Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section,
the interior parts being in elevation;
' handle 19.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5--5 of Fig. 4,
Fig. 16 is an elevation corresponding to Fig. 1 but with certain parts omitted; and,
Fig. 7 isa detached perspective view of the shield for protecting the type bands.
The central part of the apparatus 0on sists of a band dater having bands 10, hand adjusting wheels 11 on a shaft 12, a bridge 13 and a frame 14. These parts are like corresponding parts in band daters except that the shaft 12 (Fig.6) has no bearing in the frame 14, that is, does not extend through the frame.
Extending over the top of the frame 14 and over the bands 10 at the side, is a shield 15 having slots 16 therein for the" wheels 11. The shield 15 also has a'hole 17 through which passes the screw 18 for securing the The screw 18 is secured to a fork 20, the legs of which extend over the central wheels 11 and have bearings for the shaft 12. I
Extending overthe frame 14, and over the top of theshield 15, is an outer or cover frame 21 having its lower ends or legs bent outward to form projections or lips 22. On
the screw 18 1s a nut 23, which, when tightened, serves'to draw the fork 20 and hence the shaft 12 and band wheels 11 upward and thus tighten the bands which extend over the said wheels and around the bridge 13. The handle 19 serves as a jam nut to hold the nut 23 in adjusted position and} 2 thus prevent the bands from becoming loose by accidental loosening of nut 23. 1 As the bridge13 is secured to the frame 14, and
the shaft 12 has no bearing in the; frame 14, the parts just described serve as a band tightening apparatus for the stamp.
A die 24 is secured to a die plate 25, and to the die plate are secured studs 26 which extend upward through openings in the lips 22 Springs 27 surround the studs26 between the plate 25 and the lips 22, and on'" the upper ends of the studs 26 are nuts 28.v which serve to draw the die plate 25 toward the lips 22 and against the outward thrust of the springs 27. By adjusting the nuts 28 the die 24 may be raised or lowered to bring its printing face on a level with the printing face of'the bands 10 at the point where they pass around'the bridge 13. This adjustment is independent of the band tightening adjustment.
It is to be observed that the outer frame 21 is interposed between the frame 14 and shield 15 on one side, and the nut 23 on the other side, and is held in place by the clamping action of the nut 23. Also, that the die and die plate are secured to, and
are adjustable with respect to, the outer frame. They have no connection with the date]: part of the stamp except through the V outer frame 21. By removing the screws 28 The shield may also be removed, leaving a 'the die plate may be removed from the complete band dater with band adjustment.
What we claim is:
1. The combination with a dater having I type bands and screw and nut by which said bands are tightened, of an attachment arranged to be secured to the dater by said screw and nut, said attachment comprlslng a frame arranged to be clamped between the dater body and said nut, a die connect ed to the frame, and means for adjusting of an attachment consisting of a band shield and a second attachment consisting of a die 10 h01der,-and means for securing said attachments to the dater body by'said band tightening devices.
