Specification of Letters Patent. 1 Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application filed March 19, 1918. Serial No. 223,424.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that L'WVILLIAM T. PLowi-rnan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middleton, in the county of Canyon and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Viselamps, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to devices adapted to be held between the jaws of a vise or like implement to hold pipes, rods and like objects 1n position while being threaded, filed or otherwise manipulated, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whichmay be adapted to hold pipes, rods or like objects of varying sizes, and which may also be employed for holding headed bolts while being threaded or otherwise acted on.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in ceretain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a vise with one of the improved devices held between its jaws.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the vise and a side elevation of the attachment.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the coacting members of the improved device.
Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the other coacting member of the improved device.
F 1g. on the arrangement of one of the ing portions of the device.
Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2 illustrating the construction of one of the bolt head holding portions of the improved device.
he improved device comprises coacting jaw or body members 10-11, preferably semi-circular in outline or arched, and with their confronting faces adapted to be held in parallelrelation. One of the members, for instance the member 10, is provided at one end with a projection 12 having a lonis an enlarged transverse section line 5-5 of F 1g. 2, illustratlng the pipe or rod holdlug 12, so that when the members -11 are disposed in position with their confronting faces in parallel relation the inner face of the lug 12 will bear against the outer face of the lug 1%. A clamp bolt 15 extends through the slot 13 and an aperture in the lug 14, and is held in position by a clamp nut 16. By this means the members 10-11 are hingedly united at one end, and adjustable toward and away from each other within the range of the length of the slot 13. The members 10-11 may thus be maintained in parallel relation within the range of the slot 13. Formed in the confronting faces of the members 10-11 are radially clirected recesses 17-18, the bottoms of the recesses being serrated or roughened to increase the grip upon any object disposed in the recesses. Each of the recesses 17 is opposite one of the recesses 18,- the recesses coacting to enable the members 10-11 to be gripped against a pipe, rod or like object, and firmly hold the latter in position when the jaws 19-20 of the vise are set up by actuating the handle lever 21 of the vise. Formed in the confronting faces of the members 10-11, preferably between the recesses 17, are other recesses 22 conforming to the stock portion of a bolt or screw, enlarged at their inner ends as shown at 23 to receive the head of the screw or bolt. The member 11 is provided with a similar series of recesses 24 and enlarged at their inner ends as shown at. 25. The recesses 22-24 and their enlarged terminals 23-25 are designed to receive and support the stock and the enlarged head portions of bolts or screws, to hold the latter in position when the vise jaws are closed against the members 10-11. The recesses 17 are of varying sizes to correspond to different sizes of pipes or rods, while the recesses 22-24 are likewise varied in size to enable bolts or screws of various sizes to be held in position. The outer faces of the members 10-11 are preferably inclined or sloped away from their inner edges, as represented more particularly in Figs. 1, 5, and 6, so that an object held between the members 10-11 may be acted one-half of the width of 0f the gripping members,
-readily acted ment without interference jaws or other parts.

points,
uponrby a file or other implement without interference from the adjacent faces of the on 'by, a file from the vise The improved device is simple in construction',can be manufactured at small expense, and of any required material, and is Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the automatically adjustable rious sizes, and will firmly .grip the object in any desired position, or at any required of the vise angle relatively to the jaws to objects of Va Y Having thus described the invention, what 7 is claimed as new is:
A v1se clamp COIIIPI'ISIIlg coactmg'body members arched in outline, one of said body members having a slotted projection and the other body member having an aperture, and a clamping means operating through the slot and the aperture,
members may be gr pped whereby theloodyv between the jaws j of a vise at spaced intervalsto provide an unobstructed opening gaging points and the body members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature WILLIAM T. PLOWHEAD.
