BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH BALLENBERG, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a. specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to made and use the same.
This invention relates to bedsteads and particularly to means for connecting the end and side rails with the corner posts, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective construction for this purpose whereby the side rails are detachably and reversibly connected with the corresponding corner posts, and by means of which such operation may be quickly and easily performed without the use of tools or implements of any class, and whereby the end rails are secured to the corresponding corner posts by a simple and effective construction, part of which is also employedin making the connection of the side rails with said posts; a still further object being to provide means wherebv the detachable side rails may be locked in operative position in which condition they cannot be detached.
Another object of this invention is to provide a construction of the class specified which is particularly designed for use in connection with what are known as metal bedsteads but which may be used in connection with bedsteads formed of any desired material.
The inventionis fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig nated bysuitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved means for attaching the rails of a bedstead to a corner post, the corner post being shown in transverse section, and being tubular in form; t I e Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. l
Fig 3asection on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 a plan view of a blank from which the lock member of my improvement is made, said view'being on a reduced scale;
Fig' 5 a similar view of a blank from which the body portion of the rail attaching device is made; and
Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 3 but on a reduced scale and showing a modification.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a one of the corner posts of a bedstead, which, in the construction shown, is tubular in form and is made of sheet metal and, in the practice of my invention, I provide a reinforcing plate 6 which is arc-shaped in cross section and adapted to be mounted on the inner side of the post a, and which is provided at intervals with spaced inwardly directed ears 5 which are arranged in pairs and which are cut from the material of said plate and bent inwardly as shown at 6 and the post a is provided with corresponding apertures a I also provide a rail attaching bracket 0 which is formed from a blank 0 shown in Fig. 5, comprising a central transverse body portion 0 provided at its ends with bolt holes 0 and provided at one side edge with a foldable extension 0 having a supplemental side edge folding member 0 provided with a longitudinal slot 0', and the body portion 0 is also provided at its opposite side edge with a foldable side member 0 provided at one side edge with a foldable member 0 having two slots 0 and at the other side edge with a similar foldable side member 0 one-half 0 of which is foldable at right angles to the other half and the parts 0 and c are both out centrally as shown at 0 to form inwardly directed bearings 0 when the blank 0 is folded to form the rail attaching bracket 0.
In the operation of folding the blank 0 to form the main part of the rail attaching bracket c, the transverse central portion of the blank 0 forms the back plate 0 of the bracket while the parts a and c are bent at right angles to the back plate to form one side and thebottom of a housing for the bracket as shown in Fig. 3, while the part c is folded atright angles to the back plate to form the opposite side of said housing and the part c of the part c is folded inwardly to form an inwardly directed flange at the bottom of said side of the housing as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, while the part o of the part c is folded outwardly as shown in Fig. 3 to form an attachment for the, end rail (Z of the bedstead which is riveted or otherwise secured thereto as shown at (P.
I also provide a cam lock device 6 which forms a part of the attaching bracket cand which is formed from a blank 6 shown in Fig. 4, and which comprises a central body portion 6 having cam-shaped side folding members .2 and provided at one end with laterally directed ears a which are bent inwardly as shown in Fig. 2, and the cams shaped side folding members c are also bent inwardly as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and in connecting the cam lock device 6 with the housing part of the rail attaching bracket, said housing part being open at the top, the ears 6 of the cam lock device are passed inwardly of the sides of the housing portions near the back plate thereof and arepivoted to said sides as shown at 0 and the said cam lock device is adapted to be swung vertically as indicated in Fig. 2, and in the downward movement thereof, the points of the cam lock members 6 pass downwardly through the slots 0 in the part. c and through the slots 0 in the part c, ail as clearly shown in Fi 3, and in this position of the cam lock members 6* ot' the lock device 6 said cam lock members a bear on the inwardly directed hearings o at the sides of the housing of the attaching bracket 0.
The part 6 of the cam lock device 6 is beveled out or recessed at the back edge thereof as shown at e to correspond with the shape at the post a in transverse section, and to permit said cam lock device to swing into its highest position and the edge portion or free edge portion of the part e of the cam lock device isalso preferably provided with a recess e to permit of the insertion thereunder of the finger to raise said cam lock device when in its operative position. as shown in Fig. 2, or the insertion of a suitable instrument, it said lock device should become tired in its operative position from any cause.
In the accompanying drawing have aiso shown at f one of the side rails 0:5 a bedstead, and said railis composed of angle-iron, one side portion f? of which is provided with a reduced angular extension 7*. having a supplemental reduced extension .7, and the part i is provided with a central longitudinal slot 7 adapted to receive the bearing members c at either, side of the housing of the rail attaching bracket 0. In attaching the bracket 0 to the post the inner reinforcing plate 7) is first placed in position with the nuts gin place between the ears 6 and bolts g are passed inwardly through the back plate 0 or" the bracket attachment 0 and through the apertures a? in the post a and through the nuts 9, and said bolts aresecu ed home tight and this securely locks the b list attachment to the post, and in the operation of connecting a side rail with the rail, attaching bracket 0. the lock device 6 is raised as indicated in dotted lin s in Fig. .2. after which the part f? of he r is inserted into of b ket and moved lat erally into the position shown in Fig. 3', in
naeasaa which operation the bearing 0 ot the corresponding side of the housing passes inwardly through the slot 7 in the part F, as indicated in Fig. 3, after which the lock device e is lowered into its operative position as shown in Fig. 3 and the side rail is securely locked against any movement in the housing of the bracket 0.
With the foregoing description it will be seen that the side rail 7 may be connected with the bracket 0 in two different positions, or in other words. said rail may be reversed and in one position the part f will form the outer side portion of said rail and will be directed upwardly as shown in Fig. 1, while the part 7 will form the bottom of said rail, and in the other position of said rail the part 7 willt'orm a fiat top surface therefor. while the part 7' will form the inner side of said rail, which will be directed downwardly as shown in Figs. '2 and 3. It will be noted that the part f is cut away and this forms the extension or part f and said parts 7 abuts against the cam 61 when in its operative position as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that the novel features of my improvement reside primarily in the means for attaching the side rail or rails to the corner post or posts of the bedstead. and with my improvement this operation may be quickly and easily performed, and the side rail or rails will be locked securely in position against any movement whatever and may be quickly and easily detached whenever necessary or desirable. V
The object of passing the side portions 6* of the lock device 6 down through the bot-v tom of the housing of the bracket 0, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8, is to brace the side portions a of the lock device a and make them rigid and immovable when in operationbut in Fig. 6, i have shown a modification in which the same result is accomplished by making the side portions e of said lock devices shorter and providing one of them with. an inwardly directed bottom flange plate 6 which abuts against the other side member 6 and which braces said parts and holds them 'igid when. in use.
