1 36,? l 1 I Patented Dec. 3, I918.
% 'INVENTORQ W1 TNESSES: Mmer ATTORNEY Q BY M,
WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHAZY, NEW YORK.
DRAW-BAR AND YOKE CONNECTIDN.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MINER,
a citizen of the United States, residin at Chazy, in the county of Clinton and tate of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draw-Bar and Yoke Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica tion. V
This'inventi'on relates to improvements in draw bar and yoke connections.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and relatively inexpensive detachable connection for standard draw bars and yoke straps of draft riggings, the connection being so arranged as to permit the remployment of old yoke straps of the riveted type without modification.
Another and'more specific object of the invention is to provide a connection of the character above indicated and so designed that the parts of the connection may be made in the form of forgings to thereby rednce manufacturing cost and insure a more uniform quality of material employed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a part. longitudinal vertical section, part side elevat1on,of a draw bar and yoke showing my improvements in connection therewith. transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1. And Figs. 3 and -l: are perspective views of two elements of the connection. 1
In said drawing, 10 denotes the shank of a standard draw bar having a butt 11 of the usual form, said butt having upper shoulder 12, lower. shoulder 13 and standardly spaced and located upper and lower rivet receiving holes 14 and 15. The draw bar is adapted to be detachably connected with a U-shaped wrought iron yoke strap 16 of usual form, which yoke strap 16 may be either a new member or an old member of the riveted type and having upper and lower standardly spaced rivet receiving holes 17 and 18 in the front ends of the yoke arms.
The improved connection, as shown, comprises an upper block A, lower block B, an inverted U-shaped strap C and a transversely extending key D.
The block A is provided on its inner or under. side with a pair of relatively shortintegral cylindrical lugs l919, the same Specification of Letters Patent.
Fig. 2 is a' Patented Dee 3,}918.
Application filed June 14, 1917. Serial No, 174,663.
being so located as to penetrate the rivet holes 17 and 14 of the upper yoke amend a draw bar butt, respectively. The lower block B is similarly provided on its inner or upper face with a pair of correspondinglugs 2020 adapted to penetrate the rivet holes 18 and 15 of the lower arm of the yoke and draw bar butt, respectively. On its upper face, the block A. is provided with a transyersely extending groove or recess 21which 18 des gned to acconnnodate the upper transversely extending portion 22 of the strapor loop C to thereby provide a shouldered engagement between thestrap (land the bloc kA. The lower block B is provided on its under face with a transversely extending groove or recess 23 in which is adapted to be received the key D to thus provide a shouldered engagement between said block B and said key I). The dependin side arms 2424 of the strap C are provi ed at their lower ends-with openings 25-25 to accommodate the key D and the latter, whenin position, may be prevented from accidental displacement by aeotter 26 or other suitable means.
The method of assembling and disassembling the parts will be obvious from the preceding description when considered in connection with the drawing, and it will be noted that the strap C and the key D, when assembled, form a band of rectangular form which encircles the blocks A and B, the draw bar butt and'forward ends of the yoke 16. As will be obvious, the blocks A and B, the strap C and key D may all be made in the form of forgings, the blocks A and B being preferably drop forged. In this manner, the parts may be made at relatively small expense while at the same time insuring material of a high quality and free firom latent defects.
It will also be seen that the length of the arms 24-24 of the strap C may be varied, or the location of the holes 25-25 therein may be varied, to thereby accmmnodate the connection for draw bar butts of different heights and without changing the character or size of the blocks A and B. It is also possible with my constructionto have the openings 25 of such height as to accommodate keys D of different thicknesses to accomplish the same. results, that is, to provide connections for different size draw bars.
Although I have herein shown and de scribed What I now consider the preferred trate the respective upper and lower sets of rivet holes in the yoke and draw bar, of a detachably united two-piece rectangular band arranged to engage said blocks and surround the latter, the draw bar butt and yoke ends'to thereby hold said blocks in position.
In means for detachably connecting a draw bar and yoke having standardly located rivet receiving holes, the combination with independent upper and lower blocks, each having a pair of lugs adapted to penetrate respectively the upper and lower sets of rivet holes'in theyoke and draw bar, of a band arranged to surround the draw bar butt. the ends of the yoke arms and said blocks. said band comprising a U-shaped loop and a cross key detachably associated therewith, the key being located outside of the draw bar.
3. In means for detachably connecting a draw bar and yoke having standardly located rivet receiving holes, the combination with independent upper and lower blocks, each having a pair of lugs adapted to penetrate the respective upper and lower sets of rivet holes inthe yoke and draw bar, of a detachably united two-piece rectangular band arranged to engage said blocks and surround the draw bar butt and yoke ends to thereby hold said blocks in position, each piece of said band having shouldered engagement with one of said blocks.
4. In meansfor detachably connecting a draw bar and yoke having standardly located rivet receiving holes, the combination with independent upper and lower blocks, each having a pair'of lugs adapted to penetrate respectively the upper and lower sets of rivet holes in the yoke and draw bar, of a U-shaped loop adapted to straddle said blocks, the draw bar butt andthe ends of the yoke arms, and a transversely extending key detachably associated with said strap and disposed outside of the draw bar, said blocks having transversely extending grooves in their outer faces adapted to accommodate the transversely extending portion of the U-shaped strap and said key to thereby obtain a shouldered connection between said band and both of the blocks.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 12th day of June, 1917.
WILLIAM H. MINER.
