INVENTOR;
JOHN MACDONALD, DEPOSIT, NEW YORK.
I HINGE.
Application filed January 7, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. MACDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deposit, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved type of hinge in which the leaves are detachable or separable. While the hinge is capable of general use, yet one particular need therefor, is in connection with screen doors, since one leaf may be attached to the door and the other leaf to the casing and the door removed for winter storage with one leaf attached thereto and without necessitating the removal of the other leaf from the casing.
The invention resides in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of the parts as will now be described with relation to accompanying drawings, wherein one preferred embodiment is shown.
Referring to said drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved hinge;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the hinge employs leaves 4 and 5 respectively, pivoted together by a pintle 6.
Patented Dec. 3, 1918. Serial No. 210,675.
provements may be connected with the ordinary type of hinge when desired.
The ends of plate 7 are bent into angle lugs 16 which bear against angle lugs 17 struck outwardly at right angles to the leaf 4. If desired, and preferably, additional lugs as at 18 may extend outwardly from the leaf 4. All of the lugs 16, 17 and 18 have registering openings into which a removable key 19 slides. This key preferably has an enlarged head or finger-piece as at 20 to facilitate its manipulation.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the spring 13 tends to hold the leaves 4 and 5 in the position shown in Fig. 2 as the leaves are in alinement. That is, in the same manner as the ordinary spring hinge. In order to detach the leaf 5 from leaf 4, it is merely necessary to remove the key 19 from engagement with lugs 16, 17 and 18. When the key is removed, the section 5 together with the plate 7, may be completely detached from the section 4. It will be realized, that in use, one of the leaves will be attached to a door or other object while the other leaf will be attached to the frame or casing.
Since I have illustrated and described, merely one preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined by appended claims.
I claim 1. A hinge having a first leaf provided with a cut away portion, a second leaf, a plate pivotally connected with the second leaf, the first leaf having an outwardly struck portion providing a slot, the said plate having an extension which is received by said slot, lugs provided on said first leaf and plate, having registering openings, and means extending through said openings for holding them rigidly together.
2. A hinge having a first leaf provided with a cut-away portion, a second leaf, a plate pivotally connected with the second leaf extending into the space of the cutaway portion, the first leaf having an outwardly struck portion providing a longitudinal slot, the plate tering sald slot and overlapped by the struckout portion, plate having lugs,
