To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN STEINMAN, a citizen of Russia, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Bags, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to a bag which is essentially used by persons for carrying miscellaneous portable articles, and the object of the invention is to provide the bag with a supplemental purse for receiving coins or other currency.

The invention is fundamentally designed to provide a supplemental pocket in the front portion of the bag adapted to open independently of the main pocket in the bag, when it is desired to quickly produce a coin to pay car fare or other incidental expenses.

The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation showing the upper portion of the bag.

Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the supplemental pocket open.

In this drawing the numeral 5 designates a bag or pocket which is provided with a frame 6, consisting of two members swing; ingly pivoted together at their lower ends 7 and having snap catches 8 for holding the two members shut. The upper ends of the pocket are secured to the main frame in the usual way. A handle 9 serves to carry the bag slung about an arm or it can be gripped by hand. When the frame members are swung over or open, it gives access to the interior of the bag, as is well known.

The central portion of one of the main frame members is arched, as shown at 10 in Fig. 1, and fitted in the arch is a supplemental frame 11 having a latch 12 for engagement with lugs 13 projecting from the main frame. The lower ends of the supplemental frame are pivoted at 14: to the lower arched portion of the main frame. The latch frictionally engages the lugs, so that the supplemental frame cannot be accidentally opened. One end 15 of the mouth of a supplemental pocket 16 is secured to the supplemental frame, while the other end 17 of the mouth is fastened to the main frame above the arch, best seen in Figs. 2 and 3. By-fitting the supplemental frame in the arch of the main frame, as shown, it does not detract from the ornamental appearance of the main frame, and the pocket being hidden in the bag cannot be observed.

It should be noted that the supplemental frame opens outwardly, as indicated in Fig. 3, so as to readily give access to the interior of the pocket. By reason of the peculiar method of pivoting the supplemental frame, only the upper portion of the front wall of the pocket will open with the frame, so that accidental spilling of the contents is obviated. By locating the supplemental frame below the jaw members of the main frame, it will be entirely independent of the main frame. The main pocket 5 is slitted along the arch 10 of the main frame, so that when it is desired to Open the supplemental pocket 16, as indicated in Fig. 3, the slitted flap will swing outwardly with the frame 1l and the turning or hinge joint will be on a line with the base of the arch. In this construction, the outer pocket 5 entirely covers pocket 16, which is suspended from the inner portions of the frame t0 hang along side the wall of the main pocket where it will not interfere with any of the contents carried in the main pocket.

Modifications of the invention within the scope of the claims and the law of equivalents can be made; for example, the walls of the pocket could be provided with recesses for holding dierent denominations of coins.

I claim 1. 'A hand bag comprising a main frame including two flanged jaw members pivotally connected at their lower ends, one of the members having a recess formed in the flange adjacent to the jaw, combined with a supplemental frame arranged to it into the recess and swingingly pivoted to one of the main frame members, side members secured to the aw members and forming therewith the side walls of a pocket, an opening in one of said side walls adjacent said supplemental frame, and a smaller pocket secured within the main pocket and accessible through said opening by opening the supplemental frame.
