Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,530, dated July 2, 1872.
To allpersons to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, CLARK J. BROWN, of Plymouth, of the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gloves or Mittens and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specication and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure 1 denotes a side view of the main body-piece of a glove with the thumb mouth slit as formed therein. Fig. 2 is a side view of the thumb-piece as formed to complete, with the slit and part or parts adjacent, the thumb. Fig. 3 is an outer-side view of the thumb; Fig. 4, an inner-side view of it.
In carrying out my invention I form, in the main body part B of the glove, at the place for the thumb, a slit, S, having the form of a semi-elliptical arc or an approximation thereto, the same being as shown. Next, I cut the thumb -piece C substantially in the shape as exhibited in Fig. 2, and stitch the edge a y o of it to the concave edge a y c of the slit. I also stitch the edge a a: b of the thumb-piece to the convex edge a b of the Iiap or part A bounded by the slit. l Next, I' turn 0r fold back the edge b c of the thumb piece C and sew it to the part b o of the edge b cy a of the slit..
Next, the thumb-piece is to be folded at h, so
las to bring the edges z' and 7c together, and
they are to be connected by sewing. A welt may be introduced into each seam in order to finish it. In this manner the thumb of a glove can be formed or produced in a very economical manner, thereby saving all or most of the leather which is usually wasted, by forming the main body piece ofthe glove with an elliptical or oval-shaped opening to receive the
