GLOVE;
Specication'or" Letters Patent.- Pntuteid July 20, :1915.v
Application -led. September 3, 1912. Serial No. 718,381.'
To all wiz-0m t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK J. Sroinn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grrafton, in the county of Qzankee'and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof. l
This `invention relates more particularly to gauntlets or gloves for automobile driving or other hard usage.
The main objects are to economically produce a strong, durable, well-fitting glove,
which can be easily put on and taken olf the hand and may be made to lit snugly or loosely around the wrist or arm, and generally to improve the construction of gloves of this class. .f y
It consists in the peculiar features of construction and in the arrangement and coinbination of parts as hereinafter particularly described and pointed out in the afppended claims. t,
In the accompanying drawing like characters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a view of the palm or inner side of a. glove embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the back or outer side of the glove; Fig. 3 is a view of the palm or inner side of the glove without the palm and thumb reinforcements shown in Figs. 1
and 2; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the thumb and a part of the hand of the glove as shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5, Fig. 4; Fig. Gis a cross section of the cuff showing the fent closed by the outer fastenings; Fig. 7 is a similar section showing the opposite sides of the glove connectedby the inner fastenings to make the cuif fit more closely aroundthe arm; Fig. 8 is a diagram of the blank for the hand portion of the glove; Fig. 9 is a diagram of the thumb blank; Fig. 10 is a diagram of the thumb reinforcement; Fig. 11 is a diagram of the palm reinforcement; Fig. 12 is a diagram of the cuff gusset or gore; and Fig. 13 is a diagram on a reduced scale of the cuff blank. A Y' Referring-to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the palm a andthe back b of the glove are preferably made from a blank or single piece of material which is cut as shown in Fig. 8, and
folded and' stitched together with the usual fourchettes (not shown) to form the hand and fingers.
An X-shaped opening c is made in the palm portion a of the blank for the thumb, leaving four thumb reinforcing' iiaps integral with the blank on opposite sides of ythe opening, as shown in Fig. 8. i The flaps d and e at the ends of the opening are pointed and comparativelyl narrow, while the flaps f at the sides of the opening are rounded and comparatively broad.
The thumb g is preferably'made from a single blank or piece of material cut as shown in Fig. 9, folded in line with the notches or indentations in its ends, and stitched together along its opposite edges by a seam 2, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. It is inserted in the opening c and secured around its base to the hand or palm portion a, by one or more oval rows of stitches 3, as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The several flaps d, e and f, which overlap the base of the thumb, are secured thereto along theirl margins by one or more sinuous rows ofstitches 4, as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The seams 4 diverging in V-shape from the apexes of the flaps d and c toward the oval seams 3, permit the material of the glove between said seams to stretch more or less tudinal seam 2 is -locatedaloiig the back of the thumb, where it is subjected to the least wear and strain, and at its inner end where it joins the hand orf palm portion a., it is overlapped, protected and strengthened by the flap e. The seamlessface thumb where it joins the hand of palm portion a in the crotch and is subjected to the greatest strain, is overlapped and. strengthened by the flap al, while the sides of the thumb ,adjacent to the base arel reinforced and strengthened by the flaps f.
The peculiar shape of the thumb opening .0, together with the oval and sinuous seams A and 4, produce not only a strong and duavoiding undue strain upon and breakingof the stitching owing to the oblique dispo-v sition of the seams 4 to the seams? and 3,
or side of the and to the direction of strain on the thumb in the opening and closing movements thereof.
ln the construction off' heavier grades of the glove for the hardest usage, such as automobile and motor cycle driving, it is preferably provided with palm and thumb reinforcenients 7L and z', as shown in Figs. l and 2.
Ythe palm reinforcement it is made from a single blank or piece of material, cut as shown in ll, to correspond wfth the palm portion e with which it is stitched along` the margin to the back b and the fourchettes between the lingers. It is formed with a thumb opening j corresponding with the opening c in the palm portion or section ft, and with integral flaps it and l, the flaps l corresponding in shape and size with the flaps f of the palm portion or sect-ion a. lt is also formed on one side with a iiap or ex tension m, which overlaps the outer side of the fore finger adjacent to the thumb, and is secured along its margin by one or more rows of stitches 5, as shown in Fig. 2. This row or rows of stitches 5, is continued around the margins of the flaps Z and /c and across the palm, securing said flaps, which overlio the flaps Z and f, to the thumb, and the inner end of the palm reinforcement to the palm portion 5, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
To avoid wear incident to the rubbing or chating of the reinforcement /i` and the underl ying palm portion a, of the glove, the reinforcement is secured to the palm. portion by one or more rows of stitches 6, extending from the crotch of the thumb transversely across the palm, and by one or more zig-Zag rows of stitches 7, between the transverse row or rows and the crotches between the lingers, as shown in Fig. l. rl'he thumb reinforcement t', which is shaped as shown in liig. ll), with notches or indentations in the ends, is stitched along its margin over the inner side or face of the thumb, as shown, and is overlapped at its base by both the flaps Z and of the palm portion i and of the palm reinforcement Il, as shown in Figs. l. and 2. To prevent the rubbing or chaing of the reinforcen'ient z' against the underlying portion of the thumb and consequent wear thereof, the reinforcement is secured along median lines to the thumb by rows of stitches 8.
As shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3, a cuff n which is comparatively stiff is stitched to the wrist of the glove, with the fent or slit in the outer side in line with the little Enger.
The fent is closed and the cuff is made adjustable, by a-llexible triangular infoloing gusset or gore o, shaped as shown in l and stitched along its opposite edges to edges of the cuil." on opposite sides of the -itent. The ogposite of the` font are i nien/iso drawn together, and the gusseto is held folded, as shown in Fig. G, by straps p, stitched or fastened at one end with lthe gusset, to the cuff on the inner or loaer side of the fent and provided adjacent to their other ends with members f/ of ball and socket or snap fastenings, the other members #of which are attached to the cull adjacent to the upper or outer side of the fent. J
To contract the upper or open end of the cuff, as shown in Fig. 7, and to hold it more snuglyn or closely around the arm or sleeve of the wearer, it is provided at a distance from the fent sufficient to clear theinfolded gusset o, with similar ball and socket or snap fastenings s and t.' Vvhen both sets of fas tenings are disengaged, the gusset o is permitted to unfold, allowing the cuff to expand to its fullest extent and thereby facilitating putting on and taking off the glove. F or some purposes, and particularly in the lighter grades of the glove, the cuff as well` as the palm and thumb reinforcements, may be omitted.
