Description

MILTON N. Hansis, or IioisrvnoN, ONTARIO, camine.
TRAY FOR CHAIRS.
To all l1i/omit may concern.'
' Be it known that I, MILTON subject ofy the King Of'Great Britain, residlingjat London, iii and Dominion of Canada, tain new and useful Improvements in Trays lfor Chairs, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to chair trays, and
more particularly to trays for use upon infants high chairs. j The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, sanitary tray of this character.which may be easily removed and replaced and` which is composed of material capable of being thoroughly cleansed and sterilized.
Another object is to provide an improved attaching means for the tray, which while not easily releasable by a child may be quickly and easilyv released by a person familiar with the operation and having the necessary strength.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which 'will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coinsciibed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l represents a tray constructed in accordance invention shown applied to the chair which latter are broken oil for convenience in illustration.
with this Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken onthe line 2-2 of Fig. 1
ig. 3 is asimilar view taken on the line Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view one end of the tray, and
Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section through he saine end as that shown in Fig.' 4.
In the embodiment illustrated, the tray 10 constituting thisy invention is shown aplied to two arms 1 and 2, .which are preerably those of an infants high chair, although obviously the tray may be applied to any other chair. Fixed to the upper face of arm 2 is a casting 3 secured by screws or otherwise, 'and which has an upwardly Offset forwardly extendingarm 4 apertured through speeication of Letters Patent.

to receive a pintle 5 carried by one end of the tray7 lO so that said tray may he swnng on said pivot. This pivot has a laterally ein tending lug 6 on its free end which designed to pass through a slot i in the arin el of the casting 3, said slot being arranged transversely of said arm as shown in Fig. 5 so that when the piiitleis inserted, this lug 6 will pass under the lower face of arm 4 and hold the tray against accidental removal, it\being necessary to bring the lug and slot into register before the tray can be lifted.
`The tray l0 which structed of enameled iron yor other metal, to render it unbreakable and yet sanitary, is shown substantially arcuate in oiir al though obviously it Amay be of any ired configuration and it has depression i0u the center 'thereof to forni a food receptacle, While' its edge is equipped with an npstarid ing rib 10 to prevent the child from :,inshm ing things olf the tray. An apertnred ear 8 extends laterally from the inner edge of the ends of the tray opposed to that whichL carries the pintle v5 and the aperture in said ear is designed to register when the tray in operative position with the' socl'get t? formed in the upper face oiC the chair l as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. "lllhen ear is in this position, a spring pressed latch member ll is passed through the ear into the socket and reliably holds the tray in operative position. This latch member ll a shown is in th'e form of an inverted il with a bill oi' hooked portion l2 thereof slidalile through the apertured ear 8 and adapted to enter the socket 9. The shank ll. ot this latch member extends through the chair arm and depends below its lower face, wear plates 13 and 14 being arranged around the aperture through which said shank passes in Figs. l and A between the wear plate lei on the lower face of the arin l and a washer 16 held on the free endv of the shank by a nut 1'! or any other securing means. This coiled spring exerts its tension to hold the latch in operative engagement with the tray and the spring is made of suiiicieiit strength so that a child cannot lift the latch to release the tray.
en it is desired to disengage the latch from the chair, all that is necessary is to grasp the curved bill portion and lift it into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 or iete'n loe iaised engaging the Washer E@ on its lower `end end ooing the sli-ink upwardly against 'tile tension oi the spying l5. ml/'lnen this bill has been moved out of engagement with the een 8, the t'ey may oe swung on its pintle 5 to release tlie oli-iid, and ii desired, may be einoved in the menne? above described.
A tray constructed ,in accordance with this invention is 'thoroughly senitemy, not breathable, may end readily applied to olieiis already in use, and it Will oe yeiy-eiiioeeions for the ginie -jose foi' which it is intended.
The oiegoing desoriptionend the drawings have fefeienoe to what may be oonsideied the preferred oi eppoved oiin of my invention. it is to be understood tliet l may malte suoli changes in constuotion and arrangement and oornbinetion oi pai-ts, meteisiels, dimensions, eter, es may prove e2- pedient and fell Within the scope of the claimed invention.
