Be it known that I, HERBERT E. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type-Plates, of which the following is a specification. 7

My invention relates to improvements in type wherein a flexible plate is used in conjunction with supports to suspend a type slightly above the surface of a plane or drawing upon which it is to be impressed;

In lettering maps and other drawings a uniform style or type of lettering is required not only bythe United States Government but by many private concerns as well. When various drawings or maps are executed by different draftsmen the type of letter varies with the skill of" the draftsrnan.

The object of the present invention is to provide a type of uniform design andslze which may be readily placedor alined in I proper position relatively to other letters in the same word and impressed upon a plane surface such as a map or other drawing.

A further obiect of the invention is to provide improved means whereby all maps and, drawingsprepared by various draftsmen will have the same type and style of lettering executed with equal skill.

A still further ob'iect of the invention is to provide improved means for lettering maps and drawings quickly and neatly effecting a saving. of time.

It is also an obi ect of the invention to provide a type of the character described having means for supporting the type slightly above the surface upon which it is to be impressed to prevent premature printing and to also prevent soiling the map or drawing with the ink on the face of the type.

I accomplish these and other objects by means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which Figure l is a broken portion of a map disclosing the manner in which the type is operated;

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a transparent flexible fzplate, preferably rectangular =in shape.

upon the under side of which is mounted a transparent raised type 2 of any suitable design. Supports 3 areplaced on each corner of the flexible transparent plate 1 and at a distance from the type 2 thereon so that the said plate 1 may be deflectedor bent sufiiciently to bring face of the type 2 thereon into contact with a plane surface 6 upon which the type 2 is to be impressed, the sup ports 3 being of slightly greater thickness than the thickness of the saidtype 2.

By means of the supports 8 the platel is supported above the plane 6 a distance which will in turn support the lower face of the type 2 a slight distance above said plane as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

Two of the supports 3 and one edge of the plate 1 are beveled in thesame plane and toward the edge of said plate 1 as disclosed at t in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

In operation the proper letters are selected and inked by any suitable means, suchas inking roller or pad not shown, and the plate 1 is moved to its proper position as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings, with the top and bottom of the type 2 alined:

The alinement of the type 2 is facilitated by the transparency of the plate 1 so that the proper and correct position of the type 2 may be obtained before said type is impressedupon the map 7or otherdrawing.

I The impression is made and the ink on the face of the type is transferred to the map 7 or other drawing by placing a pressure with the thumb or other object on the direct center of the plate 1 and opposite the type 2 on the under side thereof.

When the pressure is released the elasticity of the plate 1 will immediately raise the face of thetype 2 from the plane surface 6 or map 7 so that the type may be easily removed without smearing the ink or blotting the impressed letter.

Another method of placingthe type in alinement where the letters are to be laced in a straight line is to provide a ru er or other straight edge, not shown, against which the beveled surface 4. resting flat upon the plane surface 6 is disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. After so placing the plate 1 may be laid flat upon the plane surface 6 and impressed in the manner hereinbefore described.

The beveled edge may also be used for removing the plate 1 after the impression is had. By pressing downward upon said heyeled edge the plate 1 will be raised from the drawing to the inclined position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings and when in this position is easily and readily removable from the drawing.

The type 2 is also transparent so that to ink may be observed thereby indicating when sufiicient ink has been placed upon the type 2 to insure a good black and sharp impression.

it is obvious from the foregoing that l have provided an improved type for lettering maps and other drawings whereby the alinement of the letters may be facilitated. it is also evident that l have provided improved means for standardizing letters as Well as improved means for lettering maps and drawings.

1 have also provided improved means for supporting the face of the type to be impressed above the surface upon which such impression is to be made whereby the type or device may be moved into alinemcnt Without prematurely printing an impression The same means is adapted to immediately and automatically raise the type from the plane surface upon which it has been impressed as soon as said impression has been accomplished.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. A. type comprising a flexible plate; a type mounted upon the under side oi? the late; and means for supporting the face of the type slightly above a plane onwhich it is to be impressed.
