UPKE, OF CHICAGO, ELLINOIS.
Application tiled June 29, 1923. Serial to. Matta.
To aZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that ll, WILLIBALD Lonneke, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of Prettin, Kreis Torgau, Province of Saxony, Prussia, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Processes ot Printing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the art of printtThe main objects of this invention are to provide an improved and inexpensive method of printing for eecting the result produced by the well known process of reverse etching, wherein the design or legend remains the color of the sheet and appears on a printed background; and to provide a method of printing show-cards, signs, price tickets, and the like by a person unskilled in the art of printing.
One form of apparatus adapted for carrying out this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
ligure 1 is a plan of the apparatus, including an elastic plate and its supporting block, the pressure roller being shown in perspective.
Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the apparatus, showing the method of arranging the cutouts thereon.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the apparatus showing a printed sheet being removed from the plate and cutouts after the printing operation.
Fig. 5 is a plan of the printed sheet.
The process of reverse etching which is `now in use for producing designs and letters upon a printed background while leavingthe design the color of the sheet is expensive and also requires a high degree of skill in its performance.
The apparatus for carrying out the pres.- ent invention is inexpensive and the method is simple, so that it may be readily accomplished without particular skill in the art of printing.
This invention involves an improved process of printing, which consists in placing a series of cutouts, making up the desired design or legend, on an inked pad or elastic plate. The letters or figures are inverted and arranged upon the pad 'in reverse order. The sheet to be printed is then placed upon the pad over the cutouts and pressure is applied to the back of the sheet, so as to transfer to the tace thereof ink on the pad surroundlng the cutouts. Tf desired, several prints may be made before it is necessary to remove the cutouts for replenishing the lnk on the pad. The present method of prmting 1s particularly suitable for produclng transparent cards used in illuminated slgns for advertising purposes.
Tn the form shown, the apparatus for carrymg out this invention includes an elastic plate or pad 1, mounted on a block 2, of a base 3. The supporting base 3 projects beyond the edges of the pad so as to 'form a ledge a, on which appears a suitable scale, as shown at 5.
The cutouts are made ot paper or other suitable thin material, and are preferably handled by a suitable form of tweezers 6, as shown in Fig. 3. Tn the form shown, the cutouts include letters 7, and a rectangular border strip 8.
To facilitate the proper placing of the cutouts upon the pad 1, a straight edge 9 extends across the pad, and is provided with lugs 10, arranged for sliding engagement with the end ledges t. The lugs 10 are arranged so as to space the straight edge slightly away from the pad 1. The upper face of the straight edge is provided with a longitudinally extending recess forming a seat 11 for the cutouts.
Tn operation, ink is applied to the pad 1- Sti) 13 ink on the pad 1 surrounding the cutouts,
ree
form a predetermined legend, then placing a sheet upon the pad and cutouts and applying pressure to the back of the sheet to transfer to the face thereof ink on the pad surrounding said cutouts, and then removino' the sheet from the ad and cutouts.
'igned at Leipzig, ermany, this 29th day of May 1923.
WILLIBALD LBCKE.
