This invention relates to a type-card adapted to be used in connection with a suitable printing machine, such for example as that shown in my pending application Serial No.

394,531, filed September 23, 1929, for printing or otherwise impressing identification characters upon other cards or sheets used in public libraries and other places where books and other articles are loaned to patrons for 'limited time periods.

In the present practice in most of the well regulated public circulating libraries at least two records are kept on separate cards for receiving the identification characters of the borrower and the date of beginning or eX- piration of the time period for which the book or other article is loaned, these impressions being made upon both cards by the librarian at the time the book or other article is loaned.

One of these cards also bears the name of the author, the title of the book and the number of the book and is retained by the li-' brarian as a permanent reference record while the other card upon which the borrowers identification character and date of loan of the book has been printed is placed in the pocket of the book to be retained by the borrower as a reminder of the date of expiration so of the loan.

It is to be understood that the printing machine will be provided with suitable means for printing the dates of expiration of the time periods of the loan or loans of the same or different books in sequence upon both of the cards beginning from one end of each card.

The main object of the present invention is to provide a separate card for each borrower with distinctive identification type or characters, preferably embossed and arranged upon card in such manner as to permit the card to be placed in the printing machine in such relation to the dating type that when In other words, broadly stated, I have -2--, is placed within the opening +3-- 0 the machine is operated the identification sought to provide a paper card-with a metallic type plate afiixed thereto and bearing the borrowers identification character so that the card with the type plate thereon may beused in the printing machine for recording such characters upon-another card or cards.

As illustrated this device comprises a card 1- of relatively stiff paper and atype plate -2 preferably of type metal, the card 1- being preferably rectangular and provided near one of its corners with a rectangular opening ,3, for receiving a portion of the type plate ,'2. H I

The type plate 2 is preferably made of relatively thin sheet metal of about the thickness of the card and comprises a substantially rectangular main body portion -2 having integral wings or flanges 4 at opposite ends of the opposite longitudinaledges of the main body, said flanges being offset laterally slightly beyond the plane of the main body a distance corresponding approximately to the thickness of the card -1-- so that when the mainbody or rectangular panel f the cardthe flanges 4- will engage in the adjacent face also around the opening to prevent displacement of the type plate through the opposite side of the opening The wings or flanges 4 are provided with prongs projecting therefrom through the adj acent portions of the card and clinched against thesame to hold the. plate against displacement in the other direction.

The rectangular panel 2 of the type plate 2 is provided with lengthwise rows of borrowers identification characters 6 and 6 arranged one above the other but in close proximity in parallel relation, those of one row being embossed in one direction to face "the corresponding side of the card while those. of theotherrows are embossed in the opposite direction to face that side of the car These raised rows of type forming the identification characters project in opposite directions beyond the planes of the corresponding faces of the card; :And althoughthe same :7 characters are used in both rows they are necessarily reversed so'that when the'card is placed in the printing machine with the type plate between the opposed printing platens and additional cards are placed in the same machine between opposite faces of the type plate and corresponding platens the movement of the platens 'toltheir printing positions will cause facsimiles of the corresponding type to be, impressed upon the ad]ac'ent faces of the additional cards.

7 It is'ev-ident, however, that a single additional card may beplacedin the printing machine between theraised faces of either 'row of type and the-adjacent platen'to' produce a single reproduction additional card.

The primary object, therefore, of'this idenof "the type upon the 'tificationcard is tovpermit'it to be used in a printing machine for impressing the raised charactersofthe type plate upon add1t onal cards simultaneously with the impressions made by the dating typevof the machine.

The additional cards referred to may be the reference card'to be retained in the files of the library, and the borrowers card which 7 is placed in the book loaned to the borrower sothat both the librarian and the borrower may have similar-records ofthe identification records of borrowed books by the same borrower to be impressed upon the type-card in which case the latter will serve the double purpose of a reference card and as a printing card by simply reversing it end for end in the printingmachine.

As previously stated, the type plate -2 is made of thin type metal which when aflixed to the card l in the manner described has its marginal edgesfirmly pressed and partially embedded in the paper card so that corresponding faces of the card and plate will be disposed in substantially the same plane to enable the card to be easily inserted into and withdrawn from the printing machine without liability of impairing either the'type plate or card. i V

(a) After the record space on the card l has been exhausted by the repeated printing of records thereon, the type-plate 2may be removed from the card and reaflixed to anew card to be reused to identify the same borrower. r
