To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Stenciling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stenciling and more particularly to a device for imprinting letters, figures or other markings upon astencil sheet, for reproduction thereby.
It is frequently desired to use figures or letters or other arbitrary markings on a stencil and on prints made therefrom, as for purposes of classification, numbering I or identification, or for other purposes, and it is one of the objects of my invention to provide a device whereby a mark, or a series of marks, may be easily and readily impressed upon a stencil sheet for reproduction thereby. Another object of my invention is to provide a device adapted to aid in impressing. one or more such marks upon any desired place in a stencil. sheet and in symmetrical relation. A further object of my invention is to provide a stencil-iniprinting device which is simple, compact and inexpensive in'const-ruction, and one which may be readily and easily applied to a stencil sheet when it is desired to use the device therewith, and may be easily and readily removed completely from the sheet when its use is not desired. Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In operating with my improved device upon such a stencil sheet, I preferably place the sheet upon a flat rigid plate so as to provide a suitably rigid backing surface beneath the sheet. In accordance with my invention I provide an impression implement, preferably comprising a rigid bar having a metallic type in relief on one end thereof and adapted to be taken in the hand and .thrust against the stencil sheet to cause the impression of thertype to be imprinted upon the stencil sheet, for reproduction on prints made from said sheet. By this means the imprint of any letter, figure or other marking may be cut into the stencil sheet in accordance with the particular type 'face used. In order to aid the operator in directing the type'with suflicient force againsta desired spot on the sheet I provide a carriage having a guideway adapted'to receive the 1mpression bar for reciprocation therein. The
-movement of the implement and insures proper alignment of the type face with the surface of the stencil sheet.
If desired, I mount my carriageupon a T square so as to be slidable in longitudinally disposed grooves thereon. When a T square arrangement is used the stencil sheet is preferably mounted upon a support presenting squared, rectangular side and end members against which the head of the T square may abut; This arrangement aids in placing a series of marks in linear alignment on the sheet. The T square may be scaled so that a series 'of marks may be accurately spaced as desired; The use of my improved device embodying the T square is especially suitable for use with devices for making tracings or copies of drawings of the character disclosed in the patent to ,Albert B. 1,163,647, in which the stencil sheet is supported upon a transparent table top positioned over a source of light, the transparent top being surrounded by a frame which is squared for the purposeof accurately guiding a T square. I
In order that a clearer understanding of my invention may be had, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating certain possible embodiments of my invention. Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a sectional View of the carrier positioned on a supported stencil sheet with the Specification of Letters Patent. Referring to the drawings, a stencil sheet the usual backing sheet 2,
1, provided with is shown supported upon a fiat, rigid surface 3 of a support 4. The support may suitably comprise a fiat piece of wood, metal, glass or other suitably rigid material, the only essential requirement being that a flat and rigid backing be provided underneath the stencil sheet 1. mounting forms no part of my invention. As shown in Fig. 3, I provide an impression implement comprising a rigid bar 5, preferably of metal, provided at one end with a metallic type 6. The type may be of the ordinary relief form and is preferably cast in the ordinary manner. If desired, the type 6 may be cast in a' small type bar 7, coma suitable metal or alloy, and the type bar 7 then soldered or otherwise attached, as at 8, to the end of a bar 9 of firmer and heavier material, such as brass.-
The bar 5 is adapted to be grasped in the hand and the type 6 thrust against the surface'of the stencil sheet 1 with a quick, firm movement so that the type will cut its impression upon the stencil sheet for reproduction when copies are made in the regular manner from the stencil.
In order to make it easier to properly imprint the type at any desired place on the stencil sheet, I provide a carriage 10 adapted to rest upon the stencil sheet and adapted to guide the impression implement 5. this carriage comprises a'fiat, rectangular frame 11 adapted to lie fiat upon the surface of the stencil sheet 1.
Extending upwardly from the top of frame 11, and substantially at right angles to the plane thereof, are two .members 12, each substantially in the form of an inverted U, their ends being attached to the frame 11, as by means of rivets 13. The frame 11 has a central open portion and the members 12 are arched thereover. Supported by and between the two members 12 is a tube 15 of rigid material such as metal, which may be soldered or otherwise secured to members .12 as at 14. Preferably, the impression implement 5 is square in cross section and the passageway through the tube 15 is also square and just large enough to permit the impression bar 5 to be freely reciprocated vertically therein and at the same time preventing the turning of the bar. The tube 15 is positioned so as to be perpendicularly disposed to the plane of the frame 11, and in consequence will be perpendicularly disposed to the surface of the stencil sheet 1 when the carrier '10 is positioned thereon. Thus the type face is held The stencil sheet and its upon the surface of a supported stencil sheet with the hollow of the tube 15 pointing perpendicularly toward the spot on-the sheet at which the imprint of the type is desired to be made. The impression implement carrying the desired type is then taken and placed in the guide tube 15 with the chosen type directed toward the stencil sheet. The impression implement is then raised a distance in the guide 15 and then thrust downwardly against the stencil sheet 1 with a quick motion of the hand, force as is required to cause the type character to be satisfactorily imprinted on the stencil sheet. By moving the carriage to de= sired places on the sheet, and repeating the printing operation with chosen type, a series of marks may readily and easily be impressed upon the stencil sheet for reproduction thereby. As shown in Figure 2, 16 rep resents diagrammatically various characters successively impressed upon the stencil sheet 1 by the use of my improved device.
By combining the carriage 10 with a T square I am able to provide a device whereand with such by accurate alignment-and spacing of the letters imprinted upon the stencil sheet may be obtained. As shown, in Figures 4:, 5 and 6 the T square used comprises a head portion 17 having a downwardly extending flange 18 adapted to abut against a straight edge of the supporting plate 4 upon which the stencil sheet is mounted, and a straight bod portion 19 adapted to extend across the sur ace of the stencil sheet. The body portion 19 has a longitudinal central opening as at 20 and is provided with inwardly facing grooves, as at 21, running longitudinally from the head of the T square to the outer end of the body. The flanges 22 of the frame member 11 of the carriage 10 are adapted to fit into the grooves 21 whereby the carriage is supported upon the T square a stencil sheet insuitable position. The carv130 riage may then be moved linearly to cause successive type impressions to be arranged in linear alignment upon the stencil sheet. By aligning the carriage with appropriate scale markings the spacing between the characters printed maybe accurately predetermined. The T square device greatly aids the ease and accuracy in which a series of markings may be placed upon a stencil sheet in symmetrical relation. the guideway for the impression implement being movable on the T square, which is itself movable over the stencil sheet, a series of marks may be easily, quickly and accurately impressed upon the stencil sheet atany desired places on the sheet, and in any desired relation to each other.
After the desired markings have been placed on the stencil sheet, the device may be readily and easily lifted from the sheet and laid aside until its use is again desired. The stencil sheet may, of course, be operated upon further by other means, if desired. For instance, if my invention has been used merely to place a title -or an identification marking upon the stencil, the body of the stencil-may be cut by means of a typewriter, or a stylus, or by other means. It is to be' understood that any desired form of manually operable impression implement may be used, and that the form of the carriage or of the I square may be modified and changed considerably without departing from the scope of'this invention' It is intended that .all matter contained in the above description or shown in the -accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
\Vhat I claim is 1. A device for cutting stencils, comprising, in combination, an impression implement having type and adapted to be manually directed against the surface of a stencil sheet to cut an impression of said type there in, and means, comprising a movable frame providing a guideway. for said implement, for guiding said type against the surface .of said stencil sheet when said implement is operated.
2. A device for cutting stencils, comprising, in combination, a frame adapted to be placed on the surface of a stencil sheet, a guideway on said frame disposed perpendicularly to the surface-of said sheet, and an impression implement mounted in said guideway and adapted to be moved manually therein and against the surface of said stencil sheet to cut an-impression of said type therein.
3. A device for cutting stencils, comprising, in combination, a frame adapted to be placed on the surface of a stencil sheet, a guideway on said frame disposed perpendicularly to the surface of said sheet, and

4. A device for cutting stencils, comprising, in combination, an impression implement adapted to be directed perpendicularly against the surface of a stencil sheet to cut a stencil, and a carrier adapted to rest upon the surface of said stencil sheet and having a guideway for said implement extending perpendicularly to the surface of said sheet, whereby movement of said implement in said guideway is restricted to movement which is directionally perpendicular to the surface of said sheet.
A device for cutting stencils, comprising, in combination, a T square having a pair of longitudinally extending grooves and an aperture between said grooves, a carrier having a pair of flanges seated respectively in said grooves whereby said carrier is maintained slidablyin position on said. T square, an impression implement comprising a rigid bar carrying type, and a guiding-member for said implement supported on said carrier-whereby said implement is restricted to movement the plane of said T square. y
6. A-devi'ce for cutting stencils, comprising, in combination, an impression implement angular in cross section and having type, and adapted to be manually directed against the surface of a stencil sheet to cut an impression of said type therein, and means, comprising, a frame movable over said stencil sheet and having-a guideway for said implement and conforming to the shape thereof, for guiding said type against the surface of said stencil sheet and preventing rotation of said-implement in said guideway when said implement is operated.

A device for cutting stencils, comprising, in combination, a T-square movable in either of two opposite directions over a stencil sheet, a carrier for animpression implement slidably mounted on said T-square for movement in either of tWo opposite di-' perpendicular to- 8.
