SHELF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed January 16, 1918. Serial No. 212,086.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, THOMAS T. PRITGHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyattsville, in the county of Bighorn and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in shelves, and an important object of the invention is to provide a shelf including means whereby the same may be supported from a nail or the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device including means whereby the same may be readily detached and attached to a supporting member.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device which is supported in such a manner that the rear wall of the device snugly engages the element upon which it is supported, whereby the shelves may be held in a rigid position.
A further obj ect of my invention is to provide supporting means for the device which when attached to a nail or the like will coact with each otherwhereby the supporting members will be held in close engagement with the nail or the like.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is strong, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and is eflicient in practice.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the description and wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the shelf, looking at the forward end of the device, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through the same.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention the numeral 1 designates the bottom of a tray having its marginal edges bent upwardly at substantially right angles to the bottom of the shelf, to form the front 2, the sides 3, and the rear wall 4. The top marginal edge 5 of the rear wall 4 is rolled inwardly, and extends a substantial distance above the top edges of the sides and front walls. This edge is rolled to receive a rod 6 therein for a purpose which will presently appear. Intermediate the ends of said wall, I provide a substantially semi-circular cut away portion 7, the lowermost edge of which extends below the rods 6. Each of the sides 3 are provided with an opening 8, intermediate its end, for a purposewhich will presently appear.
A supporting rod 9 has its lower end 10 looped'to snugly embrace the rod 6, at the opening7. The uppermost end of the rod 9 is provided with a loop 11 which is arranged at substantially right angles to the loop 10 so that the same may be correctly positioned upon a nail or the like. A brace member 12 is substantially U-shaped to provide the arms 13 and the bridging or connecting portion 14. The free ends of the arms 13 are curved inwardly to form the hooks 15 which are adapted for reception in the openings 8 in the sides of the shelf. Intermediate the ends of the bridging portion 14, I bend said portion upwardly to form the inverted U-shaped loop 16, the arms of which lie in spaced relation. The loop 16 is also adapted to be received upon a nail or the like, and when in such a position is inclined from the tray toward the supporting nail. This bracing member 12 is adapted to be of such length that when the same is connected to the tray and engaged with the nail, the tray will be supported in parallel relation to the floor.
The numeral 17 designates a wall, a portion of a cabinet, or a vertical portion of a cabinet or the like, in which is driven a nail 18, having its headed portion extending a substantial distance from the element 17.
In use the supporting arm 9 is raised to a position at substantially right angles to the bottom 1 of the tray, and the loop 11 is passed over the head of the nail 18. The loop 16 of the brace member 12 is then passed over the head of the nail so that the top portion of the loop 16 engages the shank of the nail.
Whenever a heavy article is placed in the forward end of the tray a downward force will be exerted upon the tray which will naturally draw the brace member 12 along with it and slide the top portion of the loop outwardly of the shank of the nail so that said portion will cause the top portion of of the loop 11 to be snugly engaged between the head of the nail and the top of the loop 16.
It will be readily seen that the supporting rod and brace member may be detached from the nail and may be swung downwardly into close engagement with the shelf so that the same may be stored in a comparatively small space.
It is to be'understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred form of the same and various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention, I claim.
1. A shelf including a body portion having one of its walls rolled inwardly and provided with a cut away portion, a rod secured in the said rolled portion, a supporting member having one of its ends looped about said rod, and its opposite end looped to be received upon a shank, and a brace member connected to the body portion and supported on said shank.
2. A shelf including a body portion, a rear wall carried by said body portion, said wall having its upper marginal edge curved inwardly, a supporting rod connected to said wall and a brace member connected to the body portion of the shelf.
3. A shelf including a body portion having walls thereon, the rear wall of which is curved inwardly, a supporting member having its lower end connected to said curved portion'and its upper end secured to a support, and a brace member connected to the body portion and having a loop thereon engaged with said support.
4. A shelf including a body portion, a supporting member pivotally connected thereto and having its upper end looped to be received upon ashank, and a brace member having its lower end detachably connected to said body portion and its upper horizontal portion bent intermediate its ends to form an inverted U shaped loop adapted to be detachably received upon said shank.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
