To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, EMORY LEE BLEVINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitlash, in the county of Hill-and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cans, and it has particular reference to that class of cans which are provided with a key whereby the can thus equipped may be opened.
The invention has for its object to produce a can of simple and improved construction having a crimped, and weakened portion wherein a key consisting of a piece of wire is embedded, said key or wire having a pro-- jecting loop which may be readily seized for the purpose of opening the can.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved construction whereby the entire lid or cover may be ripped from the can in a simple, easy and effective manner.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood hibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing. Figure 1 is a top plan view of a can constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the upper portion of the can.

16 having at the top thereof a weakened portion 17 which may be formed by properly compressing the tin plate or other material of which the can body is formed in the process of turning or forming the crimp. In the annular channel 18 formed by the crimp 16 is placed a wire 19 having at one end a loop 20 that projects through an aperture portion of the can body and connected there-- with in the customary manner by solder. The crimped open end of the can is bent inwardly upon the can body to provide an overlap inclining toward the body. This construction provides the can with a somewhat constricted opening. The cover, it will be noted, includes a disk portion of slightly greater diameter than this constricted opening and an annular inclined flange mating with the overlap when the cover is in position. Pressure is therefore required to insert the cover within the can, but .when the cover has been forced past the constricted openingthe flange will firmly engage the overlap and hold the cover firmly against displacement preliminary to soldering.
It will be seen that by laying hold of the loop 20 and pulling upward thereon, the wire 19 will rip through the weakened portion of the crimp, thus ripping the lid from the can very quickly and completely and without danger of spilling the contents.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is r A can comprising a body having the edge of its open end bent inwardly upon itself to form a channel and to constrict slightly the end opening, the resultant overlap being inclined outwardly toward the wall of the can body, a ripping wire disposed in said channel and having one end protrudin therefrom, and a cover including a dis shaped plate of slightly greater diameter than the diameter of the constricted end opening and an inwardly inclined flange mating and closely contacting With said overlap whereby said cover upon being forced past the constricted end opening will be held firmly against displacement preliminary t soldering.
