Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
LEEPECK, OF BELLEVUE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF NINE-TWEN'lIE'lIIS TO FORD B.'
A STROUGH AND OTIS L. HUMPHREY, OF HONEOYE FALLS, NEW YORK.
PREsEnvING-RECEPTACLE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 23, 1909.
Application filed November 16, 1907. Serial No. 402,356.
thereon.
The present invent-ion relates to preserving receptacles of the type in which the closure is secured to the body by means of a hardened plastic material which is )laced in sealing position while in a soft or mo ten condition, and ithas for an object to provide a construction in which the sealing substance is arranged so as not to be subject to accidental blows, while at the same time maintaining an effective sealing.
l Another object is to provide for the effective and quiclt' breaking or cutting of the sealing material in order that the closure may be removed. l
To these and other ends the invention consists in certainl i provements and combinations of parts al as vwill be hereinafter more 'fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification In the drawings wherein I have 'shown one embodiment of my inventiom- Figure 1 represeiitsv a plan view of a sealed receptacle, and Fig. 2a vertical section.
The receptacle l in the present embodiment is provided near its upper end with an 'of V-shape in cross section.
internal seat 2 and above this seat in the inner wall is f ormed a sealing material recess 3, preferably in the form of an annular groove Rest-ing on the seat 2 inspaced relation to the inner wall is a closure4 preferably having its periphery near its upper edge beveledat 5 so that the introduction of the sealing material 6, in the present instance, wax is facilitated. Below thei beveled portion, ,the periphery ofthe closure is formed with a sealing material recess which preferably is in the form of an annular groove 7 of V-shape 1n cross' section,
' registering with the groove 3 of the receptacle so that a large body of wax is formed to cause an interior-.king of the closure to the closure a device is provided for cuttingthe wax. In the present instance this device surrounds theinclosure and is embedded in the sealing material near lthe bottom thereof. Preferably it comprises a loop 8 of wire or other suitable material and an operating portion 9, and it may be secured to the closure by providing the latter with an annular groove 10 in which the loop 8 fits. .The operating port-ion of the device is preferably in the forni of a finger ring made b v twisting. the wire of which the device is made, these twists of course not extondingto the groove 1t), as otherwise this would prevent the ends of the loop separating when the operating .portion is pulled to sever the wax around the closure.
With a device constructed in accordance with this invention it ispossible to enploy the saine jars or receptacles again, the closures being adapted for separate manufactttre with the cutting devices attached thereto. The arrangeinent of the cutting device does not complicate the process of preserving the seat, spaced from the inner wall yand having a recess in its periphery, and a seal cutting device secured to the closnrebelow .the
recess therein.
having the upper portion of its periphery.
beveled, and two annular grooves one below the other and both below the beveled por# tion, the upper being adapted to receive sealing material, anda cutting device havin;I an operating portion and a loop portion arranged in the lower groove..
