UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS J. NOLTY, OF OHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEALED CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 201,939, dated April 2, 1878; application filed February 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS J. NOLTY, of Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Sealed (Jan, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved hermetically-sealed can on line .70 m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with closing-ring attached, and Fig. 3 is a top view of the closing-ring.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention is intended to furnish for canned goods of all kinds, paints, and other articles, a hermetically-sealed can that may be closed, after being filled, with great facility, and opened in a convenient manner without the use of a knife or can-opener.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim. I
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the body of a sealed tin can; B, the top or cover of the same, which is provided with a circular narrow opening or slot, a, that is placed at a suitable distance from the circumference of the top, but connected at one point with the outer portion of the top, so as to form an interior portion of disk shape that may be readily bent up or down on the short connecting portion or bridge I). r
The cover B may be either plain or provided around the circular opening with raised beads or ridges cl, for the purpose of facilitating the soldering on of a ring-shaped strip of tin, O, that corresponds in diameter to the circular slot, but is made slightly wider than the same, so as to cover the slot entirely and form a hermetically-sealed can when soldered to the top. The ring-shaped strips 0, that are out out of the covers of the larger size of cans, may be utilized for closing the slots of cans of smaller size.
To one end of the ring-shaped strip is attached a ring, 0, or other device, for being taken hold of by the fingers, and admitting thereby the ready opening of the can by the removal of the strip.
The can is filled by bending the disk-shaped part of the top upward into position at right angles to its closed position, and returning it to its place for soldering the strip over the slot at both edges and the ends. Thus a sealed tin can of great simplicity and convenience in sealing and opening is furnished for the trade and public.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sealed can having a top part with circular opening or slot, separated at one point by a solid portion or bridge, the top having raised beads along both sides of the slot, in combination with a ring-shaped strip soldered over i the slot, and having a ring or other device at one of its ends, substantially as set forth.
