COMBINED CHILDS BED AND EXERCISEBI.
mamas Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed June 3, 1918, Serial No. 238 ,045.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be, it. known that. I, Anrnnn L. Pack, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State, of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Childrens Beds and, Exercisers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to childrens beds, and has for its object to provide a childs combination bed and exerciser, which may beused as either when desired These obj ectsl accomplish with the device illpstrated in the accompanying drawings m which similar letters andnumeralsof refer cnce indicate like parts throughout the several figures and as described in the specification forming ,'a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings in which; I have shown a substantial embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as used for an exerciser. Fig, 2 is avertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device as used as a bed for a child. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the device. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bed. Fig. 6 is a detail of the exerciser seat.
The present invention consists of a frame within which a childs bed is suspended on springs, and a portion of the bottom of the bed may be turned on its pivot to form the back of a seat and the seat so arranged that the child may take mild exercise by jumping up and down with its feet on the floor. In constructing the invention I provide two spaced apart sills A fastened together by cross pieces B. Two prights C are vertically secured on said s lls A and connected by the cross head B. The bed rails D are mounted and operated between the said uprights C and supported near one end by the posts E and the other ends by being suspended on the springs 1 and 18. The side pieces F are secured to the said rails D and move therewith.
A portion of the bed bottomconsists of a rectangular frame G within which is secured the canvas 2 which takes the place of woven wire and other similar material forming a mattress support. The tension of said canvas 2 may be adjusted by means of the nuts 3 when screwed on the bolts 4. The ends of said canvas are held between the cross ties 5 and said bolts 4. are passed through said cross ties 5. Another portion of the bed bottom consists of the seat back H which is pivoted between the said side pieces F by the pivotmod 6, and is used as a back for the seat or the portion of the bed bottom as desired. Additional bed rails I) are providedby the links 7 and 8 which are pivoted together and the link 7 pivoted to said rectangular frame (Jr, while the. link 8 ispivoted at one end to the sidepieces F.
A lever link 9 is pivoted and fulcrumed on one side ofthe device to one ofsaid bed rails l) and its lower end is pivoted to a corner of said frame G. A hook 10 is fastened to another cross brace 11 that connects the rear end of said bedrails D, and another hook 12 is fastened to the back of said seat backH. A flexible seat L is provided and carried on the bottom of the said :seat back H for use when the baby is old enough to sit up and take moderate exercise, and con sists of a. piece of flexible material, preferably canvas, shown at L, with portions cut out as at 13 in which the legs of the babe are placed, and with the portion of the flexible seal: between said openings 13 provided with straps 14 which portion of said flexible seat is to be fastened across the chest of the baby and over the legs to hold the baby securely in the seat and leave it free to use itslegs and arms; and by touching its feet on the floor may jump up and down. The said seat L may be removed for laundrying by removing the rods 15 from the hems of the said seat L. The said rods 15 when used to secure the seat L inplace, are passed through eye bolts 16 which are fastened in the said side pieces F. The bed frame G and the seat L are both suspended from the rails D, and the said rails D are fulcrumed on a cross rod 17 which in turn is carried in the upper portion of the posts E. The said rails D bear upwardly on the spring 18, and downwardly on the spring 1.
The operation of my invention is as follows I When used as a bed, the frame G is released from its engagement with the catch 10 and by throwing the lever link 9 to the position shown in Fig. 3 the said frame G is made to engage with the hook 12 on the back of the seat back H. In making this shift of the bed frame G the links 7 and 8 will change their position, from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to that shown in Fig. 3 and form the addition bed rails D. The mattress, which is to be used on the bed, and is not shown, is brought into contact with the under side of the flexible seat L, and as said seat is flexible it will not be in the way when the device is so used as a bed. When so shifted and the frame G is made to engage to engage said frame G with the hook 10,
and the seat back H is made to assume a nearer perpendicular position, with the additional rails D also shifted to the link po sition 7 and 8, as shown in Fig. 2. The babys legs are placed through the opening 13 and the front portions of said flexible scat L is to be brought up and fastened across the chest of the baby with the straps 14 fastened to the hooks 20 on the inside of 1 the side rails F. As an exerciser and seat for the baby the suspension of the device is from and on the same springs 1 and 18.
Having thus described my invention I. desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In a combined bed and exerciser for a small child the combination with two spaced apart sills and uprights and posts thereon, of bed rails fulcrumed on said posts and suspended between said uprights on springs; a bed frame and seat suspended from said rails; and adapted to be shifted for use as a bed or an exerciser as desired; a lever link to effect said shifting; and hooks to engage With said frame and seat to retain them in either position as desired.
2. A device of the class described comprising a bed frame suspended on springs; and a seat suspended from the same springs and adapted to be shifted to form a portion of the bottom of the bed or a seat back as desired; and a flexible portion of said seat adapted to sustain a child when in sitting position, and a lever link to shift said bed frame and seat for use as a bed or a seat as desired.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
