To all whqflt it may concern Bait knownthat I, MATTHEW R. HuL a citizenpf the United States residing at Ccnnersville, in the county of'Fayette and State of Indiana-{have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Doors for Vehicle Body .Top Extensions, of; which the.
following is a specification.
This invention relates to removable tops.
for converting automobiles with open bodies into closed-body machines to which access is had through hinged doors. The ob ect 'is to provide a removable top which will be applicable to the open-body machines with hinged doorsnowin common use, and the invention is more. particularly directed to the attachment of thedoor'extension to the door in the open body whereby the two may swing about different hinge axes without interfering with each other or becoming sepashowing my improved door construction with the doorsclosed; Fig. 2,11 section on the linei 2 of Fig. 1, with the door open and showing its inner side; Fig. 3'; fragments of the upper and lower door members on a largerscale, showing the channel bar'at their joint broken awa in part; Fig. .4: a top plan view of the channel bar with the pin belonging'to the upper door- I member in operative position; Fig. 5 a vertical section on the lines 55 01: Figs.3 and 4; Fig. 6 a section on the lines 6-6 of Figs. 3 and 4 showing the upper and lower door members out of alinement. and
Fig. Y a perspective view ofportions of theinner sides of the door members illustrating the latch mechanism on a larger scale than same is shown in Fig. 2..
Lik characters of reiterenceindicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
' The topless or open body 8 may be of any suitable and well-known construction hav- Specifieation of Letters-Patent.

'ing doors '9, hinged in the usual'manner at 10- and. provided with a latch 11 operated by. a knob 12. The sides of the bodies do not stand as a usual thing in vertical planes,.,
but are contracted toward the bottom and generally on curved lines, as shown... The removable top 13 rests upon the upper cage of the open body 8, where itis retained by suitable means.
The sides of the removable top 13 are generally more nearly perpendicular than those of the body 8, whereby, a door hinged,
to the top member will swing on a different hmge axis from its mate below and will thereby require a constant adjustment. relative to said lower door. The upper door, or rather door-member 14, is here shown ashaving but a single upper hinge 15. but it may have two hinges. or more than two if desired. The lower edge of the door-fits loosely in the channel of a channel-bar 16, secured to the upper edge of the door 9, by screws 17 and 18. 'A transverse slot 19 in the inner end of the channel-bar or end next to the hinged edge of the .door is for the passage of the screw 18, and the length of the slot afi'ordsa limited swinging adjustment for the bar and a corresponding. adjustment for the two door members.
Located in the channel near its outer end is a plate .which is riveted to the channelbar andwhich has an eye or loop'20, transverse to the bar and extending a suitable distance above the bottom of the bar. A notch 21 is formed in the lower edge of the top door-member 14 to receive the loop 20, and fastened to the. lower edge of the doormember 1-1 is a plate with a pin 23 which projects into the notch and through the eye or loop 20, in the manner shown.
The extent of the opening in the loop 20 is sufiicient to allow the adjacent outer cornersof they doors 9 and 14 to separate as. required for their proper adjustment'when opened, due to their different l1inging.'-, and this adjustment is assisted by the movement of the loop longitudinally of the pin 21, and also by the swinging of the channel-bar 16 about screw 17 as a pivot. As the top doormember is not rigidly fastened to thelower' one it automaticallv and easily adjusts itself to the latter as the two are opened and closed. I
The lower door-member v9 is equipped with the usual spring-latch 11, having a bolt 24 pressed out by aspring 26, and. retracted by a; lever 25, terminating with a knob 12;
For outside manipulationof this latch means .carried by the top door-member .14, I provide a bent lever 28, which is pivoted at its upper end to thedoor and terminates at its lower end with a fiattenedmember having a longitudinal slot 27 through which the stein ofthegl nioh 12*passes5. The slot allows for -adjustnient'when' the lever "28 is swung and alsofwhen the door-members change-theirrelative positions at opening 'and closing, .The rod 2 8' has a-la'tera'l-extension passing'through a slot 29,1n the door concentric With-the pivot at the upper channel bar having-a movement relative'to' one of thedoor sectlons. i v 2'. channel bar at the"joint-securedtoone door 7 member and receiying the edge of the adjacent member in itsflehannel S2id Cl1aI1i1El bar having a 'limitedjiswinglng adjustment on its outer end.
